Honestly I find less offensive though, way less weird shit going on with their actual clothes. Just dudes in jackets. Her outfit alone does not even sorta communicate what she's supposed to be, it's very weirdly sexualized and her later armored forms follow that line of thought. Show skin even if it looks absolutely retarded!
She's OK, the amount of hate she gets makes me like her more, I just hope in ff7remake we get to see cloud become lightning in wall market. It'll be wonderful.
lightning as a character is ok.. she was a little stubborn in FF13 but when you consider that she had the accept that idiotic snow as a brother, who wouldn't ? she's compentent in battle, able to think by herself most of the time and doesn't do much really.
lightnng in FF13-2 was ok. lightning in dissidia duodecim was alright.
lightning as a character is mostly fine.
Problem is that the story writter in both FF13 and LR arenot up to the challenge for making a story for a great RPG
I love her design and as a character she's OK. She's not particularly memorable, nor is she outright terrible. She's used terribly, though. Her character arc is confusing and very poorly told.

She is ok as a counterpoint to overly heroic and optimistic Snow. Snow was just such a stupid character. Easily the worst character of the game. I don't get why Hope gets so much hate. He was absolutely right in wanting to kill that asshole. I liked murderous mid-game Hope a lot more than cheesy late-game motivational speaker Hope.
I like her design a lot. But her character sucks. I am more than fine with a bitchy main lead as that is a breath of fresh air from the normal JRPG female leads (i.e either moe blob, man with tits, bland nothingness) so I thought it would work out that way but nope, she kinda just stops being a complete bitch because and that is it..she then is just there for the ride.
I can't speak for XIII-2 but in XIII legit everyone else in the cast had more development and were more interesting..that's bad.
I liked her design. Didn't care much for the character. She was pretty much right in the middle in the list of characters I like from most to least in the game. Never played XIII-2 or LR.

Snow's character arc could have worked if the errors of his YOLO HEROISM was expanded upon. Hope's mom died but died in a way that still kinda made Snow look good (he tried to save her) and he got over it pretty quickly. I couldn't be assed to finished Lightning Returns but it seemed like they finally were going to touch on that there.
I'm not "whining" I'm stating a fact. Vaan was not the "lead" of that game. You need to get your terms right. The "lead" was Ashe, the person who was supposed to be the "lead" before it got changed was Basch. Vaan was a background character who doesn't talk much at all during the cutscenes. He was promoted the most for the game since that's Final Fantasy's market in Japan.
Vaan is the lead in the same way that Kirito is the lead in SAO. He is a mostly harmless character with very little actual personality that players of his similar age or younger can transpose themselves upon. He is indicative of a much larger narrative problem in most japanese media, where the main character is a charmless, soulless, often bumbling character whose blandness is used to act as an empty shell for the viewer to occupy as they're lead around by the nose by the various interesting characters who inhabit it's world and cause the story to unfold.
Vaan is the chair that player sits in, but because of that, he is still very much the lead.
not familiar with SAO. But I would say that Ashe is the lead of the game, seen from Vaan's perspective.
This is similar to how Norman McCay is the narrator of Kingdom Come and (most) events are told from his perspective, but Superman is the main character of that story.
It's not a story ABOUT Vaan at all, it's a story about ashe, told to the player BY Vaan, or seen from his perspective.
This characteristic of Lightning is actually its own story arc that isn't resolved until the last moments of LR:FFXIII. I was very impressed with the follow-through.
I only played Lightning Returns, but I couldn't understand why everyone said she was boring and felt bland.
I felt her character was perfectly suited to the events and trauma of LR, and not having played any of the previous games, I had to use what the game itself told me to "fill in the blanks", which lead to the bonds the characters shared feeling much deeper than they probably were.
Lightning felt cold and distant, constantly remarking on how she should feel happy about
regaining her sister
, yet she couldn't. She wanted to protect everyone, and then in the end
it turned out that Hope, whom had been her "only friend" during the events of LR was nothing more than a puppet being used by "god" you felt angry for her, and betrayed, because of everything she had gone through with every character arc, dealing with everyone's sense of loss, despair, and joy as they tried to make the best of the world ending and she finally decided for herself to take fate into her own hands and "kill god", in order to rescue her friends and everyone she cared about.
It's been a long time since I've played a game where I felt strongly about the main character, and not having played the previous 2 games probably helped me perceive more depth in her character than was there, but I really love Lightning, and I'm bummed that LR is likely the final game we'll be able to play as her in (outside of Dissidia).
She's okay but incredible replaceable. Fang completely highwind's her out of existence after her introduction, Lightning is barely in XIII-2, and Lightning loses much of her personality in Lightning Returns to fit the storyline of the plot device.
If Luna is mismanaged I think it will put things in perspective. Square had tried to put a strong female character front and center, but put the wrong people on the job and ended up with cardboard.
She just is, not good, not bad, just..there. If you want your lead to have strong characterization then you'll hate her, but if you don't mind them just moving the story along she's O-K.

...why would you play LR but not play FF13? That's like watching the Lion King's 2 direct-to-VHS sequel, without even watching the Lion King (and that's giving FF13 way too much credit).

a sample of the many threads featuring her. They usually start as news but then it divulges into the conversation we have going here about her in particular.
Was she iconic?
Is she memorable?
Is she a good character?
Were her actions and behavior justified?
Was she really a hero?
Did she look good in that hat?
The debate rages on years later.
The one thing I could imagine that the lovers and haters have in common(aside the topic) is the joy they must have when discussing her. haha
In the end Nomura and to a much greater extent Toriyama got what they wanted
"She Must Not Be Forgotten." hahaha

I was told that the first 2 games were generally trash, and so I hopped into LR expecting to play an interesting ARPG with little regards for the actual story. (Story traditionally isn't important for me to enjoy a game as long as the mechanics are solid) but I actually got completely absorbed in the story and characters, and now I'm debating on picking up the first 2 games on Steam just to see what I missed.
I don't know if it's normal but I see a lot of radical responses. Lots of them referring to Lighting as crap. And an occasional jab at Tidus or Vaan.
Anyways I like her. I like that she's strong and cool without being sexualized (in fact, the sexy costumes in LR look strange on her imo). I actually like how she acts all tough. I don't think she does it consciously anyway, it's an emotional shield, or just her personality.
Not everyone has to display emotions all the time. And that personality can lead to people following you like in the case of the game because they perceive you as strong. But it can also lead to people disliking you or being unable to connect with you. It depends on the situation, but for the game, which placed our characters in peril and uncertainty, it made sense for them to seek a leader.
I also love her design.
It's ok to not like her, to each his own. But calling her garbage is a bit too extreme imo.

That's about the only good thing I can say about Lightning.
Full disclosure, I got about 30 hours in on FFXIII, and never played XIII-2 or Lightning Returns besides their demos. So if Lightning somehow actually grows a personality by Lightning Returns outside of what I saw in the demo, I wouldn't know.

It's more that her character is poorly done. Squall's criticisms are actually disappointing because he goes through a proper character arc where he develops and grows throughout the whole game and you get to enjoy watching his growth, especially since you experience so much of his thoughts and struggles. Lightning's character struggles to have proper development and feels completely rushed when her arc comes to it's conclusion. The second half of the game is more focused on Vanille and Fang that you barely even get the opportunity to flesh Lightning out more.
Then everything after XIII she's just an awful character.

Is there a consensus? I don't believe there is one, though on GAF the most vocal opinion seems to be that she's bad.
My opinion: She's a cool character with a pretty neat design and a personality that resonated with me. A character that starts out only looking strong and ends up being strong inside by the end.
I liked her enough that I can't wait for her to re-appear in KH3.

I'd say that the consensus is that Lightning is not the worst thing about FF13, but there are other more problematic elements of that game that end up dragging her down.
FF13-3 though...they just assassinate what little character she had.
I had no issue with Lightning. She was ok if a little moody. The real problem is that mess of a story. It's hard to get attached to any of those characters because the story was so bad. That's the real problem with FFXIII. Not the linearity, characters, or battle system.
I thought this was a thread for the third game of the Final Fantasy XIII franchise not on her character herself. I thought she would be forgotten by now, as this thread you see, I am wrong and she is still talked about. I am not a Lightning fan btw
