not familiar with SAO. But I would say that Ashe is the lead of the game, seen from Vaan's perspective.

This is similar to how Norman McCay is the narrator of Kingdom Come and (most) events are told from his perspective, but Superman is the main character of that story.

It's not a story ABOUT Vaan at all, it's a story about ashe, told to the player BY Vaan, or seen from his perspective.

THANK YOU! This story technique has been employed a lot into novels also (seeing the story from a "supporting character"). It's similar to Raiden in MGS2 as well when Snake is actually the lead and Raiden, the support. Ashe is the most underrated female in a mainline FF game, by far. Lightning on the other hand, the most overexposed and overused.
