It's a lot more elegant than Click."Tone-juggling" isn't really selling it for me. I've seen Click.

The review embargo ends tonight apparently. Let's see what all the fuss (?) is about.

What time?
I can taste the blood in the water.
Well there's this new trailer

And new TV spots:

But WB didn't bother telling anyone or even uploading it to their own youtube channel.
I don't know why they even bothered delaying it if they weren't even gonna make an effort at selling the thing, like with 300-2. They're just dumping it. I wonder why they even greenlit it.
Oh and rewatching that stuff made me realize why I don't care for the visuals shown. It has that whole orange/blue poster bullshit, only applied to the entire movie. Maybe the Wachs thought that would help against bombing? lol.
Has try hard written all over it
It's hard to really begrudge a film like Jupiter Ascending, both for its creative scope and in that it is one of the few-and-far-between female-led action movies, but it is equally hard to validate it beyond those elements, its aesthetics, and the casting of the leads. There is perhaps a better feature that exists partially on the cutting room floor explaining some of the more bizarre plot developments/holes or one that could have been made with just a few tweaks to the screenplay. But the movie that will be hitting theaters this week is best described as unfortunate.
A bold try to make an epic science fiction fantasy
Seen at the 2015 Gerardmer Film Festival.
The first half is entertaining and has a sensational action piece to bid. While remaining visually stunning, the film flattens down and loses itself in lazy Hollywood clichés: Lame love story, one dimensional characters, bad one liners. The main plot feels completely dashed. Even Ned Stark can't save the disaster.
We tend to be OK with a film that starts bad and gets good along. But a movie that starts good to finally let you down with lazy writing is just frustrating.
After the awesome "Cloud Atlas", this feels like a big disappointment.

hal9001, did you watch it in 3D? Any comments on that if so?
Yep I saw it in 3D on an average sized screen. I'm not a fan of 3D and could do without it but here it was done well and added to depth in some of the space scenes.
Here's my thoughts from the film thread:
Jupiter Ascending
Saw an advanced screening of this today. One of those so bad its good yet so batshit insane type of films that I think I love it. It's like someone took all your favourite sci fi films and space animes and cut and combined it into one big dumb pulpy cliched space opera. Intentionally made to harken back to the classic 50/60s sci fi cheesiness. The real star of the show is the special effects and action scenes though. My jaw dropped during some breathtaking set pieces and vistas. While the dialouge and plotting was mostly ham fisted trash, the story lore and universe was very interesting and I desperately want to see a prequel starring the three Royal siblings as it has so much potential. It feels a bit like this generations Dune/Flash Gordon.
Oh and guys you HAVE to see that Eddie Redmayne performance here - wow I just can't - it may just be genius tier acting (that's sure to become a meme cult favourite).
Favourite scenes include:All Eddie Redmayne scenes, first hover roller skate Earth chase, crashing the Wedding and diving into Jupiter.
This was exactly what I was hoping for. Based Redmayne.
Speed Racer is 39% and Cloud Atlas is 66% on RT, so I've already abandoned that as any sort of quality indicator for the Wachowskis.
I just might see this opening night.
and if there's one thing i hate its when someone tries hard
slacking>>>>>
Yeah that's an important point. Every film of theirs is critically slammed. From The Matrix sequels to Speed Racer to Ninja Assassin to Cloud Atlas. The only ones that were immune were the original Matrix and then V for Vendetta and they didn't direct that one nor did they have total creative control over it. The point is that even with their films getting tepid and sometimes even negative reviews I've enjoyed everything they've ever done and they have made films that I've adored.
Bound was very well received.
It's not a problem of critics just disliking their films -- the issues that when the Wachowskis are given bucketloads of money and creative control they tend to turn out junk. Bound and Matrix were the Wachowskis working within constraints and turning out measured work that wasn't bombastic or self-indulgent.
So I was under the impression that the review embargo ends on February 2 but apparently the embargo actually ends on February 6 or rather release day. This would explain why there's no reviews yet and reviewers are tweeting that their reviews will be up "on Friday". So I guess it's Friday then. It's not a good sign though if the review embargo ends on the film's release date.
The studio must truly have zero faith in this. That delay last year had to be down to quality concerns.

I'll be honest, I'm expecting a bit more given how amazing Cloud Atlas was, but if what you say is all the movie delivers, then it should still be pretty damn fun.Movie sounds like what I expected. Campy acting with gorgeous visuals and art direction. I'm excited.
I remember seeing the previews for this when it was supposed to be coming out this summer past and thinking that this has to be the last time The Wachowskis are given a significant budget ever again.
It feels a bit like this generations Dune/Flash Gordon.
definitely. I mean, prods would be crazy to keep giving them such freedom
I can easily see them jumping to TV and doing a Matrix serie after this, it's the only viable way
Sci-fi, space, heavy emphasis on space politics = ???
They're working on a series for Netflix. Sense8 is due sometime this year. I'm curious to see JA but don't see myself paying full price. Maybe a matinee or Redbox down the line.
These reviews and impressions seem to suggest that a lot of the movie might have been left on the cutting room floor, while the big action set pieces were retained. With a running time of just 2 hours, this is the shortest film they've made since Bound. With a setting which seems the most ambitious in terms of scope. Really weird. I wonder what happened behind the scenes.
This is making me worried, especially since they never do director's cuts. FUCK. The lore is what seems to be the most exciting part of this movie. These reviews and impressions seem to suggest that a lot of the movie might have been left on the cutting room floor, while the big action set pieces were retained. Put them in charge of Iron Fist.definitely. I mean, prods would be crazy to keep giving them such freedom
