What's the good word on Jupiter Ascending?

I want to see this regardless of what reviewers say. It looks like it could go both ways but I am definitely in the mood for a sci-fi movie and this fits the bill (I hope!).

Echoing the same sentiment. Reviewers haven't been kind to the Wachowskis since The Matrix Revolutions. That film was critically destroyed and I fucking loved it. Same goes for Speed Racer, Ninja Assassin and Cloud Atlas. The only film of theirs that was critically admired was V for Vendetta though that seems to be the exception.

Seriously The Matrix Revolutions is one of my favourite films and yet critics stated it retroactively ruined the entire trilogy.

So ultimately your perspective is a good one to have. Expecting Jupiter to at least be on par with Speed Racer.

I enjoy their movies for what they are. The only one I haven't liked was cloud atlas. That movie was a boring slog with great individual points. Even then I'm glad I saw it. I've never regretted watching a watchowski movie atleast once.

To be fair, all their movies since the Matrix haven't been good

whether or not they've been good they've at least been...unique. cookie cutter blockbusters come out every year. a shitty wachowski movie only once every few years and it's been interesting imo. will watch in theaters and see what's up with this.

I don't know why people keep defending the Wachowskis. One good movie.

One.

1.

Don't they get some credit for V for Vendetta? Cause that's a damn good movie.

Wait they did V?

Hmmm... well if that's the case....

  • The Matrix
  • V for Vendetta
  • Cloud Atlas
  • some actions parts from The Matrix: Reloaded

By my count that's like 3.3 movies. Sure I"ll give Jupiter Ascending a chance... if nothing else, for the Batman V Superman teaser trailer.

Well they didn't direct it, but they wrote and produced it. That's why I was saying do they get some credit for it?

The studio moved it to the month of February. If history tells us anything, movies that move to Feb. are sent there to wither and die. My hopes are pretty low. The studio sees so little chance of success.

there isn't some conspiracy against the Wachowskis. Just like there isn't a conspiracy against M Night Shamalamadingdong
While Cloud Atlas has flaws and perhaps isn't the bestestestest movie ever, it's still literally a billion times better a movie than some huge undefensable crapola like Last Airbender. Even Speedracer, while perhaps a bit (intentionally) C grade-ish when it comes to the story and such, can be a really fun movie to watch if you approach it with the right mindset and don't expect some "oscar worthy" writing or some deep philosophical answers to what is the meaning of life.

This is going to be a cult classic. Everyone who doesn't watch it should feel bad for what they have done. And they aren't allowed to complain about remakes/reboot either.
Unless of course it is bad.

Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to have Mila Kunis as the lead star? Good god :x

What about Bound? I haven't really seen it (partially watched it years ago), but I believe it's meant to be quite good?

I'm more thinking the Feb release is to capitalize on the Valentine's Day market. Newest trailer really plays up the love angle. I'm pretty sure the initial move was announced as due to the film not being finished and the siblings needing to reshoot some scenes. Unless you feel there's some conspiracy, I see no reason to doubt that.

Problem I have with this film is it's being marketed as so generically sci-fi, but being a Wachowski film, you know it'll be anything but. I have hope that whatever makes this film truly stand apart and what makes it Wachowski pedigree, must be something truly special for the marketing team to keep it so close to their chest.

Time for your eyes to melt out of your socket, then.

The fact that there's people that can't even acknowledge the achievements of this film boggles my mind. Makes me feel like I wasn't bred for this planet.

It'll be a feast for the eyes, but your mind will stay hungry.

Plus the obligatory "teenage girl scifi epic" argument. Unless you are a 14-year old girl, this movie will bore you to tears just like that Insurgent series.

.

its all about the writing and with no sophia stewart to plagiarise they could/will be fucked. still wanna see it though!

Story seems dumb as hell based off the trailers.

But the sci-fi setting + visuals are enough that I will probably go see it.

If I were a few years younger I would gladly pay to see this train wreck. Alas, with no spare time, at least to see a movie like this, I will have to pass until it hits Netflix. Those trailers....good lord.

The box office charts will allow for lots of Jupiter Descending references, so we'll get that from it at least.

From a visual standpoint it's one of the most novel films made since... Well, since The Matrix.

One example: transitions. Speed Racer undoubtedly some of the most creative transitions I've ever seen in a movie.

Take this gif, for example:

speedracerrexdqz7c.gif

The red car is part of a flashback, showing Speed's older brother racing back when he was alive. When the Mach 6 comes bursting in from behind, the present time literally washes over the flashback. Watch how the entire scenery changes. Who has ever done something like this? Nobody. And it's not done just for kicks, throughout this race you see Speed racing against the game-like ghost replay of his brother, dueling with him and with himself, and whether he is willing to supplant his old lap record. So this cool transition has a narrative purpose.

It's really sad how little appreciation or acknowledgement it gets. Its visually layered approach to narrative and flashbacks is probably the only new thing I've seen in terms of cinematic language in my lifetime.

I liked Cloud Atlas, but I was pretty disappointed how standard it was compared to SR. No doubt the massive bomb that was SR shook them up. Who knows what kind of visual experimentation we would be getting out of the Wachs if their boldness had been rewarded.

For some reason all I can see it as is a bigger budget version of "Dark Angel" with lots of laaaame fluff, stupid costumes, and CGI shakey action. Will pass.

The years it's taken to release also offer no comfort.

Vouchsafe: loved Matrix 1, Bound, V, Dark City and Cloud Atlas.

Seriously The Matrix Revolutions is one of my favourite films and yet critics stated it retroactively ruined the entire trilogy.

If Reloaded were good, Revolutions would've been Episode 1 levels of shameful thinking. But Reloaded was boring and a bad sequel too, so we were set up for the fall.
