What's the good word on Jupiter Ascending?

I don't know what crack the Wachowskis were smoking when they did the casting.

Seriously, Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum in a dramatic Sci-Fi role...what the fuck.

They were probably thinking the only way they get this movie made at all is to give the studio a couple of extremely marketable leads.

Eddie Redmayne was so good in Theory of Everything that I'm actually tempted to buy tickets solely to see him be so bad in this

Wachowskis get great villain performances in pretty much all their movies. Would be strange for them to falter with that here.

I hope the movie does well, if only because I can't stand to read Lana Wachowski moaning for the third time in a row about "reinventing the aesthetics of cinema" and how everyone was just too stupid to understand their far-too-subtle "we're all one" messaging.

I actually really like Channing Tatum, but everything about him in this movie just looks ridiculous.

The elf ears, the hover roller-skates, it just looks so odd. I do want to go see it (John Carter was an OK time), but my expectations are as low as they can go at the moment.

Welp.

Despite the hype of a secret screening, clusters of seats inside the 300-person venue remained empty, and a handful of patrons walked out of the two-hour-plus space epic starring Mila Kunis as a princess and Channing Tatum as an intergalactic soldier tasked with rescuing her.

The Wachowskis’ flair was fully on display, with sequences reminiscent of “The Matrix” or “Star Wars.” But when the film ended, the usually gracious Sundance audience didn’t clap at the closing credits.

It doesn't look good, and really hasn't since they pushed a summer release into February. It was a poor choice to have an early screening at Sundance, this type of movie likely wouldn't play to that crowd even if it was superb.

My guess is that if this thing performs the way people expect it to the Wachowski's will probably have to go back to the Matrix well.

I will honestly never understand the hate for Speed Racer, have people never watched the TV series? It's nearly 100% true to it. I wish the Wachowskis were directing the live action GITS movie. I'd actually be excited about it.

Speed Racer is maybe the movie that most makes me question how we label "quality" in our movies, because damn I just don't really know how to evaluate that movie.

Screening this thing at Sundance is pointless. I think all the trailers have been pretty bad, showing a mishmash of one hundred different things without any cohesion, but I'll still give the Wachs the benefit of the doubt. It's hard to make an entirely new big budget sci-fi IP of this sort.

Speed Racer gets an A for Awesome.

Pretty much exactly how I feel about him tbh. He's not my favorite actor by any means, but I like him in general. But in a sci-fi role?!

Man that trailer doesn't look half as bad as everyone makes it out to be in the thread. The biggest offender in my opinion is the casting, but I can live with it.

I dunno. I get Stargate Ra vibes from the main baddie, and that's what's up. Will rent for sure.

I LOVED Cloud Atlas.Halle Berry aside, it was a touching movie. Could do without the "future segments" though. Speed Racer was super trash.

The best part about Jupiter Ascending seems to be the Batman v Superman teaser haha.
It's not even confirmed :(

I feel like folks are selling the Wachowskis short. Their movies don't always come together but they are jam-packed with ideas, heart, and filmmaking verve. Those sibs give it their motherfucking all, and it saddens me to see so many people writing this movie off because it "looks goofy."Yeah, maybe it's awful, but I have a feeling it will have its share of admirers, and personally I'll take a million personal, weird, silly projects like this over whatever-the-fuck-Zack-Snyder-movie that has its trailer attached.

Echoing everyone here to some extent. I was super excited for this as a massive fan of The Matrix and even The Matrix sequels along with almost every film the Wachowskis have made since then but then the studio demonstrated a worrying lack of faith in this by shifting the film from a Summer tentpole release to the February dumping ground. Rumours from those test screenings last year were that the film just isn't any good. Having said that I disagree that the trailers for this don't look good; the film looks like cosmic colour overload science fiction spectacle awesomeness. It has those awkward moments like Speed Racer had but ultimately the film definitely looks like something I'd love to see.

I'll be there day one just like I am for every film these two make. Matrix prequel trilogy based on the Second Renaissance next please. It was a crime against cinema that the studio forced that into an animated short on The Animatrix. Hoping those rumours prove true and the Wachowskis do return to the Matrix universe in some capacity.

Hold on, they screened this at Sundance?

lol

As if we needed any more confirmation that WB has no clue what to do with this movie.

Just checking IMDB now and the UK/US release date for this is 6 February. Wow didn't realise it was that close. Also according to this article from The Telegraph the reactions to the rough cut of Jupiter Ascending show in test screenings last year were poor so the film was delayed so the Wachowskis could have more time to work on the film.

Hope that results in a better film and makes the lengthy delay worth it. Don't mind delays if the end product is superior to what we would have received before.

Well. I thought Speed Racers was pretty fucking good and Cloud Atlas was pretty decent.

I'm optimistic that Jupiter will be weird and entertaining.

I fucking hate Eddie Redmayne though.

I hope its one of those movies everybody hates but i love

Like John Carter

John Carter was pretty damn decent. It just suffered from one of the most inept and anemic marketing campaigns ever.

Probably didn't help that not a lot of people there knew how to get tickets for the screening.

Yeah I know someone who saw it last April, didn't have anything good to say about it and most of the VFX were complete back then.

What's with the worst things getting the best names? Jupiter Ascending is a great name attached to what looks to be an awful movie. All of those garbage online money pits/ Farmville MMOs have dynamite names.

So the early reviews from that Sundance screening were quite negative:

And that’s before attendees started walking out in the middle of the movie. Nor did the audience seem all that thrilled when it was all over — there was no applause. Maybe that’s less surprising when you hear the reactions.

One anonymous festival volunteer felt very strongly about the film: “I hated it. It’s just ridiculous.”

Theatre half empty. People walking out. Negative exit reviews. Apparently the site found one guy (a screenwriter) who "liked it" and stressed Sundance was not the film's teenage target audience. Real reviews are apparently hitting on February 2 so we'll get a better overall perspective then.

Then again the criticial reaction to Speed Racer was negative and I fucking loved it so...
