What's the hottest mmorpg right now?

WoW Legion was fun for a month. I don't raid, so it didn't hold interest long.

Star Wars is worth a try, as it is free. The story stuff is pretty ok, but the game play is pretty run of the mill MMO. The cinematics are far better than the game.

Legion's doing really good for WoW.

Final Fantasy XIV is still going pretty strong, and should hopefully be announcing it's next expansion pack soon.

Guild Wars 2 is still out there.

There's a handful of Korean MMOs and smaller stuff too like Black Desert Online and Tree of Savior.

If you're willing to play with a translation patch, Phantasy Star Online 2 as well.

(Can't comment on Star Wars, sorry. I haven't played it in awhile.)

I thought all MMOs were dead except for WoW which is very slowly dying?
And maybe EVE or something

Nah. The genre is a bit stagnant because of all those failed WoW Clones over the years, but there are still games out there going strong.

Be prepared to not find your ideal game tho.

FFXIV a realm reborn

literally was addicted with my side job then actually moving on with the game

so many stuff to do and with its story you can play it by yourself if you want some alone time without anyone

Elder Scrolls Online just released an interesting game update that has made it way better for the way I like to play.

The One Tamriel update removes level caps from all zones, so you can explore the world freely, much closer to how you would traditionally play an elder scrolls game like Skyrim. I play with first person, with gamepad and a UI mod that copies SkyUI to make it play as much as possible like I'm playing a single player elder scrolls game that just happens to have other people in it.

Hottest as in popular? Still WoW.

Hottest as in pretty fucking cool? FFXIV :P

Expansion to be announced this Friday too.

Guild Wars 2 is real strong right now. New content still coming out regularly. Preparing for next expansion. Really solid mmo. Still no monthly subscription either. It's in its prime.

I wish this had done better... I really enjoyed it, but the player base isn't there.

not an MMO guy but out of everything i've dabbled in in recent years Elder Scrolls was the only one to really drag me in

Still WoW. The latest expansion seems to be hitting all the right spots. We'll see if Blizzard can retain their numbers 3 months in this time. WoD saw people flee in droves. Legion has learned a lot of hard lessons from WoD.

I think I read WoW subs were around 10-10.5 million again post expansion?

On top you have WoW.

Next there are FFXIV and GW2.

Next you have a bunch of successful, yet smaller MMOs, like Star Wars, Black Desert, Eve Online, and Elder Scrolls Online.

Down further you have the free-to-play eastern MMOs like Tree of Savior, Riders of Icarus, TERA, and so on.

Then, finally, at the very bottom, you have WildStar.

WildStar is a great game that was ruined by incompetent devs.

Skill-shot based combat, and heavy focus on interrupts and dodging.

One of the best MMOs I wish had done better, and maybe had a better dev behind it.

Same... I loved my Medic. :/

Yeah, I really like Wildstar. I played at launch for about four months, but then I went back to GW 2 because I could tell the devs were fucking it up. It had everything to be a good mmo, it could have been one of the best in years.

It had charm.

The combat was fast paced and action oriented.

The game was actually challenging and the 40 man raids were great.

However, the devs dragged their feet too much on some issues and really didn’t listen to the community, so it kind of died. It’s a real shame because I really enjoyed it.

Can't comment on 'hottest' but just some relevant info on a couple of eastern MMORPG's...

The international release of Tree of Savior struggled at the start. It keeps improving with some sizable patches (database merger with the Korean version, some new content and bug-fixes, etc.). The population has declined month-on-month but is showing signs of stabilising, and with a new rank being released tomorrow it's hoped that old players will return to check it out. I believe it's proving to be extremely popular elsewhere (i.e. Japan).

Chinese MMORPG Revelation Online is soon to be released in the west, and looks pretty good IMO with a in-depth guild system, unique take on a levelling system, etc. The company developing it operate WoW in China. It's entering CBT in a couple of weeks, with open betas and release to follow in due course (early 2017 I think).

WoW, FFXIV, SWTOR GW2 and ESO are all great options with healthy populations. Played them all a few months at least and enjoyed myself. ATM I'm switching between ESO and XIV depending where friends go.

The Secret World is worth a nice playthrough only because the story is great. Not sure how long it has left though.

I can't say enough good things about Final Fantasy XIV. From boss design to sound design, the game is a creative tour-de-force, and maintains that high quality through its relatively frequent patch content updates.

WoW is the top dog currently. Yet, due to the cyclical nature of these things, with Legion out and the next FFXIV expansion due to be announced this weekend, expect the zeitgeist pendulum to swing back over to FFXIV in the coming months.
