What's the most tryhard game ever made?

EDIT

Then again, this happened

Bitch.jpg

Daikatana wasn't really a tryhard "edgy" game. That was just the advertising.

Main party member outfits aside not even close. The game is not trying hard to be edgy in the least, just look at Prompto or Cindy.
My definition of tryhard is not solely synonymous with edgy. In my opinion, the game appears to be really desperately hoping that someone will think it's cool. It wants to be liked by people so, so badly, and it's a big turnoff for me personally. So yeah, to me that's an absolute case of a tryhard, edgy or not

"We need to make a game that is dark and mature". The worst thing is that WW is not a bad game. It really isn't, but the game is completely off the rails.

It was like it was designed by a angsty 12 year old. It's like going from Aladdin to Tyler, the Creator. What in the fuck happened with the continuity?

And look- I'm one of those people who didn't really get the hate for the promotional rock music for Dragon Age. I remember the outcry and outrage and hordes of people who went fucking ballistic, but it wasn't that bad.
Because even if a Marilyn Manson song in a Dragon Age killing spree montage is not really a fair representation of what the game offered "look how violent and cool I am" I at least understood what they tried to go for.

With Warrior Within the Princes dialogue and taunting to the enemies if outrageous.

It's why the Prince in PoP 2008 is so amazing because that prince was arrogant but had a charm. And it had a artstyle and atmosphere unlike anything I have seen before or since. It's amazing that for a game with such nonsensical combat and idiotic bosses, that it still is something I think of daily. PoP 2008 had the biggest impression on me of any Ubisoft game besides Rayman 2 and Beyond good and evil.

Bring PoP 2008 back goddamit.

Sands of Time was a good game, but not because of the Prince or the Story. PoP 2008 is the most interesting Prince there ever was.

Yeah I pretty much agree with this. It's a great game and I still like to play it on occasion. Such an interesting take on the series and it's a shame Ubi brushed it aside because of I assume low sales. It's easily one of my favorite games of the past ten years.

To stay on topic though I'd say something like any "xxxx killer". Haze immediately comes to mind.

Borderlands 2. BADASS HERE. BADASS ALERT. SUPER BADASS. THAT GUN IS BADASS. HERE'S A BADASS TOKEN TO USE AT THE CRATER OF BADASSITUDE YOU BADASS YOU.

Fun game? Definitely. Trying way too hard to seem cool? Uh huh. Love it though.

Just finished the first episode of Life is Strange. Some of the dialogue is pretty 'tryhard' in the sense that it's trying (horrendously) to emulate teenagers talking. Completely unnatural. I'm not sure how many different awful word plays they'll come up with. (Go fuck your selfie had my eyes rolling, along with stepdouche, and many others... Oiy). I hope the dialogue gets better in the following episodes.

Hatred was pretty self-aware though. It was like it was designed to offend people rather than PoP:WW which took itself seriously.

Yeah that whole thing looks like a korn music video or something. Someone should tell Jaffe
it's not 1998.

That's the entire point. It's literally playing some highschoolers metal cartoons in his notebook. It actually has some interesting mechanics as a result, with one of the more unique respawn mechanics i've ever seen. Just wish it had more graphical variety to it.

Mmmm God of War was fairly original for it's time, guy. Kratos didn't really need to try =)

Yeah... no. Rygar, a game I day oned because of NES nostolgia, came out for the PS2 3 years before it and I'm not the first person to think God of War is a tryhard verison of it.

Was wondering when FFXV would be brought up.

I cringe everytime I see the brometal cast... seeing Vs. XIII come to this is pretty nauseating.

So the line between good and try hard is white undershirts for you then? Because otherwise it's the same damn thing.

Vexx wasn't bad. It was a collect-a-thon 3d platformer we've all done before, but it was entertaining, presented interesting and varied worlds, had an interesting story, and music that really brought it all together.

It's a shame it kinda died, cause it left off on a pretty big cliffhanger.

Most try hard game for me? Probably any modern franchise that is pushing 5 or more sequels/spinoffs. Call of Duty. Halo. Yup.

It hasn't been released yet, but the menus of Persona 5 make me want to toss it a mention. I know a lot of people like them (and there's nothing wrong with that), but they're an absolute mess if you ask me.

Trying wayy too hard to make it stand out.

Agreed. The game's writing and tropes seem to have been written by someone who doesn't live in the US and has a infatuation with "tasty plasma" TVs.

I'd actually have to navigate them first to see how well they actually function.

Every Final Fantasy game since....oh, VI perhaps but certainly VII has tried (successfully for several mainline games) to reach a mainstream audience worldwide. Cloud in VII was just as much the avatar of a cool, cocky blond dude as these guys are trying to be hell bent for leather cool. Nomura's character designs re well liked, sure they aren't for everyone but....I don't think most potential FFXV buyers will be turned off by them all of a sudden, nor do I think they're try hard. The man loves leather and belts, what can I say.

I don't think the OP's question was about solely costume design that some people don't like, but that aren't actually trying to be edgy. Every big game is hoping that people will like it, I don't see how FFXV does this moreso than its contemporaries, and I don't feel that Nomura costume designs alone support that belief.

There's some solids in this thread, but the most recent violator The tombraider is straight textbook material. As 'edgy' and 'me too' as they come.

Beaten. Came here to say Tomb Raider reboot. All the goofy ultra-seriousness combined with tasteless gore and sexual moaning. As a fan of the originals, it's just as absurd as Warrior Within to me.

The Witcher series. Overly dark and cycinal with no good in the world(bullshit). Oversaturated with sex and violence. All of it is unnecessary and just childish.

Edit: The Last of Us. Overly dark and cynical as well.

The dialogue between the two main characters and the predictability in the story is kinda ridiculous. I'm sure at the end there will be some silly twist but in the meantime the story combined with the underwhelming gameplay does nothing for me. Looks good though.

I don't know, man. I'm the father of two teenagers (and one former teenager). The dialogue sounds exactly like what I hear coming from them all the time.

Don't remember much of the story, but the designs man...

May be Nomura's worst.
It's kinda funny that you say that, the Bouncer was one of my first PS2 games. I remember my mum watching me play it, she said it was like watching a moving piece of art and that she wished my granddad was here to see it. Seems silly now that I think back on it but at the time, some of those FMVs were crazy pretty.

Seriously though BMXXX. So dumb.

Also, the Bouncer had stupid load times.

Can't say I agree in regards to DmC being edgy, I often found it to be taking the piss out of itself actually. I mean one of the opening cutscenes has Dante diving through his trailer in slow motion while some metal music plays... with shit like pizza covering his junk. I won't go as far as saying it's satirical, but it's close.

I also often see the cutscene between the Slurm Queen and Dante simply saying "Fuck you!" back and forth to eachother to be taken seriously and therefore criticized. I do honestly think people take the game far too seriously. Devil May Cry is suppose to have a good chunk of cheese (pizza) alongside everything else.

Yeah, I'm talking about more than costume design. That is certainly a consideration but I'm talking about the entire vibe the game is giving off, including gameplay changes. They seem very wishy-washy with the direction of the game overall, like they're not confident in the direction they're going in because they're constantly looking back over their shoulder for approval. And then when they actually decide to stick to their guns about something, it seems tone deaf. I say this as someone who will inevitably get the game on day one and plow through it, though

This resonates with me as well; good criteria for a tryhard
