What's the worst game you played this year?

Game and Wario on the WiiU. Sadly, I sort of knew what I was in for, yet I bought it anyway. I was hoping that a few of the fun minigames would make up for how generally unappealing the game is, but they did not.
 
I'm gonna go with army of two the devils cartel.
It was fun at times because I played it with a friend.

Dragon's dogma dark arisan. Couldn't get into at all played for 25 hours and just found the overworld to be bland.

Dead island riptide, pretty bad but finished because played it with a friend.
 
I liked most of what I played this year. Worst game for me would have to be Assassin's Creed III.
Even though I played a fair bit of it, it felt like a chore most of the time.

2nd would be CoD Ghosts Multiplayer. I gave up after a week (I normally play CoD Mp for months). I'll probably go back and at least finish the single player at some point.

I'm currently looooooooving ACIV, so there's always hope for a franchise to improve. Your move, Treyarch.
 
Gone Home.
The definition of an pretentious indie game. The gameplay the was dull as hell and the big reveal that
your sister was a lesbian
was pandering at it's finest. Why this game got praised so highly is beyond me.

That was not "the big reveal". The "big reveal", if there is one is that,
your sister ran away with her girlfriend and stole all this stuff from the family to do so, and that's why there's no one home and the house is the way it is.
. Saying your
sister's sexuality
(I don't even think it should have to be tagged), is the "big reveal" in Gone Home is like saying that Liberace being gay was "the big reveal" in Under the Candelabra.

But it's not a game about a "big twist" or a huge "we've got to save the planet" type plot. It's just a slice of life type game and that's what makes it stand out so much to people.

Such a boring and dull game. Reminded me of No More Heroes, only that No More Heroes had way better boss fights which motivated you to keep playing.
 
I didn't really get to play many games this year so I'll say Paper Mario: Sticker Star too. I don't think it's 'total garbage' like other people do, but it was definitely Super disappointing.
 
Labyrinth Legends. It came out right around the end of last year but I got my review copy after new years. It was one of the worst games I've ever played, then it gave me the sweet reprieve of having a game breaking bug that stopped me from finishing it while still feeling like my journalistic integrity wasn't in jeopardy if I ran a review of it.

In my defense I was about 80% through the game.
 
Heh yeah, I wasn't a big fan either. I didn't feel like the game's design paired well with the story it was trying to tell. On the one hand, I found the narrative was really powerful. But it felt
wasted by the fact that they are having your run around this house to solve a mystery, and they throw all this stuff at you to make it seem like it's going somewhere big. Thing is, I actually liked how you the player is basically re-living the sister's life. That you are stumbling on it.

And it worked because, often gay people have to hide who they are because of social stigma. So I liked that her relationship ends up being this secret that is discovered and intertwined with the house. BUT again, for me, it didn't really add up to the overall aesthetic "being home alone, in a creepy house during a thunder storm. All the weird red herring's that make you think it's going to be something dramatic". I dunno. I know that sounds like a contradiction. But in the end, I just was not at all happy with the game as a game, and walked away feeling very disappointed.
I think that's exactly it. It entices you or entertains you with the idea of something more interesting than the largely unremarkable writings of a teenage girl. I kept thinking that the plot line was a corollary to a larger more interesting plot, but nope. That was everything, essentially. The developers must have been really sure of themselves with that ending and oh, boy, did it not work. The game felt so utterly disconnected from everything else. Why I am looking at the back of these low-rez objects for an hour when really this entire world is an excuse to play audio logs as I waste time. The writing doesn't stand on its own. It wasn't improved by interactivity. I felt mugged: It was abrupt, unpleasant, and I was out $20. I can't even commend them for trying. It wasn't just a game that didn't click with me. It was a game that was outright bad. That's unfortunate, because something like this could have been really cool. I guess everyone else was grading on a generous curve.
 
I may get a lot of hate for this, but Ni No Kuni. I just couldn't get into this game. I really tried, but I had to stop. It was the first game in a LONG time I didn't finish.
 
I don't think I've bought a bad game this year, but the one I enjoyed the least was The Last of Us. I found the combat repetitive, the stealth a bit random, and the story utterly predictable and derivative if you've read more then a couple of post-apocalyptic tales, particularly John Wyndhams (Although to be fair both post-apocalyptic and zombie stories do often tread the same ground, they just don't have to). Characters were good though, not saying it's a bad game, but it just didn't click with me, I enjoyed the Walking Dead far more.

Castlevania: Mirror of Fate was another, it's not terrible, but it's not particularly good, either. Just forgettable.

I almost bought Aliens CM at launch but was spared after I smelt a rat with the embargoes and cancelled. I can't even remember what the last total stinker I bought was, that has to be a good thing.
 
I hate to say it but I would go with Dead Space 3.

I loved the first one, gave a pass to the second but the third...nope.
Heh, I played that too, but had completely forgotten that I had about three minutes after trading it in. I'm much the same in that I still think the first one is fantastic, but the more it became a generic action shooter game with co-op buddies, more guns and less eldritch horror the less I care about it. Just the sound design on DS was enough to keep me on edge with the less-is-more approach, by the third one I was rifling through lockers for in-game magic money without a care in the world.

Still, not a bad year if the worst I can say is that I found some of my purchases utterly forgettable I suppose.
 
I don't want to reignite a flame war that seems to happen every couple of months, but the worst game I played this year was Uncharted 2. I play comparatively few games so "worst" on my list is not necessarily an atrocious piece of software. However, I found the auto-traversal dispiriting, the gunplay monotonous, and the puzzles brain-dead, making the whole game a pretty unpleasant experience. In fact, I was so unimpressed that I haven't bothered to try The Last of Us yet. I understand it's quite a different experience from Uncharted, but I'm feeling pretty skeptical about ND. Maybe when it's super cheap…

Just kidding... Monaco really didn't sit well with me. Sorry to those who liked it, it just really wasn't for me.
 
Bioshock Infinite

But that's not me saying that it's a bad game. It was just dissapointed by it overall, and often felt frustrated when I played it.

For me it's the worst game because:
*It was a disspointment in that it I felt that it brought pretty much nothing new to how storytelling is done in game. The story was of course very well done and and impressive, but it was a dissapointment on how it was mixed with the gameplay.
*It was frustrating to play when not only were there too many combat encounters, but there were so little time between them. Despite that so many combat encounters were repeated, a sign of filler content, the game barely last 10 hours anyway.

But it was still not a bad game, so that I can it the worst is a sign that I managed to stay away from purchasing the really bad ones. I didn't touch things like Simcity at all.

Bioshock Infinite and GTAV are the only AAA games I have bought this year, and I really liked GTAV.
 
Probably Grid 2 from Playstation Plus. Terrible driving physics that I just cannot get used to at all. Drifting is something that just happens to you, not something you can actually feel coming or really control. It's as if there's just a drift 'mode' that your car slips into when you reach a certain speed while turning. The framerate is terrible, the tracks all look the same because of that gross piss filter, and the AI and race setup makes it feel like the game was never play-tested. If you don't torpedo all the way through the pack on the first corner you have very little chance of winning the race, because whoever starts first pulls a four-second lead out of nowhere every single time. But the AI cars are all over the place, so you just aim for an empty space in the corner and keep hitting your rewind button if you don't make it.

There's an obnoxious voice talking at you all the time and music that plays louder than your car's engine, so it's hard to hear when to change gears. Worst of all is this one race type where the track generates on the fly as you drive. I don't know who came up with that idea, but it obviously wasn't anyone who enjoyed driving games. Every corner is blind because you're racing through cities with tall buildings, so you have no idea what kind of corner you're up against until you're halfway through it. You just slow down a bit and either find yourself slamming into walls or taking an easy corner at half speed (oh, but the AI knows exactly what's coming up, of course).

GTA Online was pretty awful, too. Starting up races that nobody ever joined, so I just raced by myself a few times. Deathmatches with nothing but the basic pistol, for however long it takes to unlock enjoyable weapons? Oh, a Carbonizzare! I'mma make that sucker mine! *lol you can't have this one you have to buy it, sucker*. I just spent the whole time wondering why I'd ever want to play Online when I have everything in the entire game at my fingertips in the singleplayer.
 
Call of duty ghost for my ps4. The multiplayer is trash to me. I dislike camping, so I die almost all the time.

I hate to say it but, Killzone shadowfall's campaign was boring. I had to force myself to finish the game. I don't get it, Killzone mercenaries is an awesome game, from single to multiplayer. I don't get how they f'd up on shadowfall.
 
Tomb Raider but that is mostly because I haven't played that many shit games this year. Tomb Raider was extremely uninspired though. It was like playing through a checklist of what publishers think AAA games should be.
 
Devil May Cry 2 easily. I made a LttP thread about it earlier in the year, and let's just say I wanna pretend I never played it to begin with.

Limiting it to 2013 releases only, then it's probably another game in the franchise in DmC lol. To be fair to it, I thought it was just painfully mediocre than outright bad like DMC2 was. Combat was kinda eh compared to DMC3/4, and while the game looked pretty (aside from some character models...), everything was all style, but no substance.

That's the whole point. Check out the
red stains on the bathtub
or the
stuff in the safe
or the
bit about the lights on the cork board
. It's purposely playing with the conventions that people "expect" in games (i.e. elaborate genre fiction trappings.)

I kind of wish the discussion of this game wasn't led by people who are so eager to keep its thematic content completely quiet, because then you wouldn't have as many people who are hostile to the idea of something like
a small, arthouse, family-oriented queer-interest story
getting crabby after playing it.

It wasn't improved by interactivity.

There's no way to do its story without interactivity.
 
It did not have to be released in 2013. Also please explain why it is the worst game you have played this year.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct

Absolutely terrible game. The AI is beyond stupid with the zombies walking around NOT attacking you...I had one moment when the zombies opened a door and started attacking the door...LOL.
The controls are pure crap. The graphics are PS1 era.
Avoid this game at all costs..


Worst game I can think of is Hitman Absolution. I thought I'd like this game but it's so fucking annoying to me. The story is bad, voice acting weak, graphics and gameplay sub par on ps3. Every time I try to play that game it frustrates me . Only other game I can think of is assassins creed 3...I could just not get through it at all.

I thought it was just me about grid 2. I didn't understand why the driving felt so sub par to me .
 
I hate to say this ('cause I really do enjoy Quantic Dream as a developer) but...it's Beyond: Two Souls. Having to say that it was the 'worst' game this year is a lil hyperbolic but it definitely was the most disappointing. Maybe I went into the game with too high of an expectation (I absolutely adored Heavy Rain) but this game annoyed and grated on me like no other. I haven't felt this annoyed with a game since FF13. For a game that boasted of having a multitude of choices and the ability to play the game the way you want to play it, it somehow made everything seem so constricted and contrived.

I play my Aiden as a crazed, uncontrollable entity who's quick to possess and kill the people who are in his way. But somehow when I come across some random security guard-- I can't possess him and make him press the button to let us through? Instead, I have to distract him and use Aiden to press the button myself? Why's that? And it's a recurring thing which happens throughout the game. This paradoxical boxed freedom of choices.

They manage to handle this style of game so well in Heavy Rain and this just felt like a disappointing step backwards. My choices in Heavy Rain led to deaths of major characters, the success/failure of catching the criminal, the fate of a child. In Beyond, everything seemed to just boil down to
three fucking romance options

I still feel compelled to buy the game as I enjoyed the demo quite a bit, but shit, that's disappointing. Maybe I'll push it to the back of the line behind TLoU and Puppeteer.
 
Either Deadly Premonition or Sim City. The first is ugly janky bullshit and is at least knowingly terrible but Sim City was a whole new level of contempt from EA.
 
I love these threads. First thing I do is hit search, *types in critically acclaimed game*, and boom I see The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, New Super Mario 3D World, Wind Waker HD, Tearaway etc.

It's not hard for Bioshock Infinite to be the worst game someone played this year. I've probably played around 30 games that were new to me this year, beaten at least 20 of them, and BI could definitely contend for the worst slot; my time is a little too limited to go all the way through anything much worse than that. It's a game with systems that are dramatically dumbed down from its predecessors and with a story whose incoherence is quite obvious even if you don't know that they tossed out the stuff the first half was supposed to be building up to; even if you loved the combat (I enjoyed it pretty good myself) it's likely to go down for posterity as a disappointment overall.

The Last of Us is, I think, generally considered a stronger game, but the people who have listed it in the thread have pretty consistently done a good job of justifying their choice (either noting that it's the worst of a strong batch or noting why it didn't work well for them personally.) I don't even see anyone listing Super Mario 3D World, and I don't think it's much of a stretch for WWHD or Tearaway to make a list like this.
 
Easily Assassin's Creed 3. I usually pick and choose my games carefully, but as it was on PS+ and I played the rest, I wanted to see the story. Even doing just that and ignoring side quests was boring, and the game ruined the entire series for me. Plus, boats are crap, so I never want to play 4.
 
Assassin's Creed 3. Skipped Brotherhood & Revelations, but this one was free on PS+, so I gave it a shot. The stories are no exaggeration: this is a terrible game. 6 hour tutorial, bad pacing in general, bugs, still the same boring combat,... I rushed to finish it and never looked back. Not playing AC4 anytime soon.

Recently beat Mass Effect 3, which left a bad taste in my mouth as well. The best part in that game was the one piece of dlc I bought (From Ashes).

2013 was a great year, played a lot of great games. The Tomb Raider reboot didn't impress me that much though, very forgettable game.
