What's your all-time favorite anime game?

The JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fighter that Capcom made is my favorite. The game is a ton of fun to play with the mechanics it has and it got me into the manga series. Doing tandem combos and dashing through the opponent to hit them on the other side is so much fun to do.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is awesome too, even if I'm not all that familiar with a lot of the Tatsunoko side. I liked the idea of the Baroque mechanic even if it was somewhat flawed.

JJBA: All Star Battle is full on fan-service, but the core gameplay isn't as strong as the other two. I do enjoy playing it though, and I'm glad I imported it.

Everything looks soooo repetitive, everyone has the same looking combos. Cool GIF though.

Budokai 3/ Burst Limit (Only for its fighting/graphics, game was not complete)/ Shin Budokai 2 (best game)

The thing is, it's not anymore repetitive than any other fighting game. Each character ends up having their own combo style and mechanics that are different. It's just that since you're fighting so fast, it's harder for casual players to pay attention to the details (like with any fighting game). In fact, there are all types of beam moves and properties and combos and different combos. Actually, there are quite a bit of combos you can do. I mean you have characters like Hercule and Baabidi that people think suck, then you find out they're top tier once you get their frame combos in.

It has more diversity than the Budokai games.

Future Gohan uses a Kamehameha as his Ultra, but look at how it is.

Of course you have stuff like Tien's Neo Tri Beam which sucks his health for as long as you keep going.

Or even Majin Vegeta's ultra which is a suicide move.

And old SNES fighters like Endless Duel and DBZ Hyper Dimension.

Oh, Monster Rancher ended up with an anime, so MR2 is actually my first place game.

Strictly anime games would probably be Legacy of Goku II.

Playing Tales of Symphonia was basically like watching an anime though, so I'll go with that.

One Piece Unlimited Adventure - This game was so long that I was amazed at the time I beat it in. It also has a lot of collectables and enough characters to be during the story that it never gets boring. The bosses were really hard later on in the game though.

Fullmetal Alchemist 2 Curse of the Elixir - This game has one of the best combat systems I've ever seen. I love that Ed has 4 different weapons to use in combat and he could transmute new ones. It has some moves you could even pull of with Al too. The game was really awesome and great but my only problem was the length. I think I beat it in like 5-6hrs. I beat it and I craved more, but it was just so darn short.

Heloooooooooo

Holy crap, yes. This came closest to being a playable anime without actually being based on an anime.

& off the top of my head, original Legacy of Goku on GBA was one of the worst I played. Blarg. Though I heard the sequels were muuuuuuuch better.

Probably one of the most memorable fighting games I have played among friends. It helped that I was into the show a the time, but even my friends who couldn't care less about that enjoyed the hell out of the game. It had fun characters, wasn't too complex in it's play mechanics, and the super moves felt like your were gambling when you used them. It's been a long time since playing it (since some asshole stole my copy) but I have some fond memories of multiplayer with friends.

Macross 2036 for the PCE SCD was one of my first games for the system and one of the best Macross games. Reminded me of UN squadron because you could buy weapons between stages. A damn solid shooter.

The Record of Lodoss War game for the Dreamcast was a pretty good Diablo clone with an great artstyle and even better atmosphere. and the best is, that you can grab it for a few bucks this day. :)

I always wondered why future Gohan had 2 arms in games. His defining trait was his arm I felt. It would be cool to fight with someone with one arm.

Anyway, yeah, I definitely agree that each character has diverse and well made special attacks. I guess I just have to replay the game to evaluate the basic fighting again.

It's just, when I see some elite videos, it just looked like slinging energy attacks and charging.

What I find interesting is that there seems to be a group of people who either prefer, 2D only, or 3D only. I support both but I'm wondering why there seems to be such a large polarization.

I know haha, I'm not saying the 3d games are bad, it's just that their gameplay never clicked on me. Actually, I wish I liked them because they are gorgeous.

Definitely Astro Boy: Omega Factor. Brilliant game.

A little off topic, but does anyone know if any of the Detective Conan games are supposed to be any good? I picked up a good chunk of volumes of the series in Japan and have been reading through them, and I keep thinking how neat/fitting it would be to have an adventure game adaptation.

"Anime game?" I'm not sure what would qualify.
The art of Chrono Trigger was done by Akira Toriyama, so I guess that would count.

Indeed. I owned All the OG Budokai games. Then I borrowed Tenkaichi 1 and was completely disinterested in the fighting mechanics. The flying/maneuvering lacked any feel of responsiveness and the combos became dreadfully repetitive. Eventually I hopped back in for Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on the Wii (Wish I kept it, just for the rarity). The mechanics where better than previously on the Wii (motion control helped) but playing competitively was boring compared to Budokai 3 which still makes my blood rush to this day. Tenkaichi just became chaos, and though in that chaos some have found depth, I prefer Budokai which was solid from the ground up.

Covers pretty much every Macross series with potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay and tons and tons of extras. It's also not too difficult to understand since there's quite a few english words in the menus. Music is also amazing plus it supports custom soundtracks.
That's the third and final one, right? With slight upgrades?
I have the second one (Ultimate Frontier) in my backlog. If I end up liking this I'll probably pick up the third one.
I wonder how the third one ended up with a downgraded CERO rating, though. Maybe something to do with the extra movie disc and not the game itself?

The PS1 Ghost in the Shell is one that comes to mind.

Yep. Can't say I've played many licensed anime games, but I know I loved that game back in the day:

A new one on Oculus Rift, with all the wall/ceiling walking and hyper-fast strafing, would put the thing to even more of a test than Mirror's Edge. You could switch between first and third person at any time, but here's an example of the gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrFVQAsnxQ8

Shouts to Record of Lodoss & Berzerk for Dreamcast ITT.

My favorite anime-licensed title has to be this:
Martian Successor Nadesico - the blank of 3 years -
One of the best adventure/novel games of all time, I'd rank it just a little below YU-NO and the Gyakuten Saiban/Phoenix Wright series.

Yup, it's the 3rd game in the series. Slight upgrade to the main game and the inclusion of an "Academy Mode" which is kinda like a visual novel. I posted my thoughts on the differences between Ultimate and Triangle here:

I was so into this game! I even heard Studio Ghibli did the character designs! Too bad the frame rate took a dump pretty often.

It's the reason I got a DS and it's the only game I've ever imported. It's amazing. My personal favorite character is Jaguar, so try him out if you get the chance.

this dude right here

Just ordered it, got it for just under $30. My first anime game in awhile...
Also, does Jaguar have a lot of recorder based attacks, lol?

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3

I don't like anything Shippuuden, but the Naruto games have been absolutely fantastic. They look gorgeous, they're super simple, and they're really fun.

168 posts! i really enjoyed record of lodoss war, at the same time it was also frustratingly difficult and the enemies in the game were cheap as fuck.

Sword of the berserk was also pretty damn fun for a hack and slash.

Fate/Unlimited Codes
Capcom Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Gundam the Ace Pilot (and any of the VS games)
Astro Boy GBA
Bleach DS games

Those were the ones that stood out to me.

I recall some sort of Robotech (?) game on the GameCube that was all kinds of awesome, with really slick cel-shading and cluster missiles tracing lines everywhere.
