What's your favorite soundtrack this gen?

Can I nominate a game that was released during this gen?

Super Smash Brothers Brawl for pure volume. It's around 300+ tracks.

Eternal Sonata because it's just awesome. Ya know I should probably actually play the game considering how much I've listened to the soundtrack. :lol

Super Mario Galaxy of course also deserves a mention.

Nothing really resonates with me like the soundtrack from Final Fantasy IX did.

I'd have to say...Twilight Princess...which still makes me gag a bit.

**Edit

Look at me forgetting about portable games.

EASY...Professor Layton. LOVE that soundtrack.

There are quite a few among games that I both like and dislike, so I'll bring up 1 that won't likely be mentioned. Yoshi's Island 2 has come the closest of any in the Mario/Yoshi/Wario/Luigi/Peach series to replicating Super Mario World's unparalleled "variations on a theme" idea. Add this to lifting 2 standard "Yoshi" tracks, the standard "Yoshi idea" of evolving map screen melodies (the best in any series ever, I think), and a very sweet ending theme, I think that it really is among the best. My favorite's "Super Hard Acrobatics," the xylophone-horn-flute-only track.

Etrian Odyssey
Portal

Yoshi's Island 2
Fuck that. Yoshi's Island 2 soundtrack was an aberration, the main reason I dropped the game. Yeah, nice concept, but I was expecting snes YI quality, not that cacophony they crammed there.

i can't even remember the galaxy music so i guess that one's out for me. so i'd have to say:

Viva Pinata
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
Bioshock
Lair
SSBB

From what I heard of the Soundtrack, The World Ends with You sounds like one of the best soundtracks ever put in a game.

So far the soundtracks of Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, Bully: Scholarship Edition, Mass Effect, Oblivion, Kameo, Eternal Sonata and Halo 3 have all stood out for me.

PS2: God of War 2.

PS3: Uncharted

360: Halo 3/Kameo tie.

special mention: harry gregson williams' work on COD 4. Sets a particularly awesome mood in multiplayer.

Mass Effect for the gold, with Lost Odyssey and Bioshock taking the silver and bronze.
Honorable mention to Persona 3.

EDIT: Just realized that Willy Wanka has the best avatar on neoGAF, nay, the entire internet.

So far, my favorite soundtrack seems to be No More Heroes. I still listen to it just about everyday. Galaxy had a good soundtrack, but I can't remember most of it. I'll go back to the game later today and listen to it again. Nothing else really stands out for me.

Sorry, are you listening to it through the DS speaker, a DS with headphones, a computer with headphones, or what?

Easy:

ADVANCE FUCKIN WARS: DARK CONFLICT

Galaxy's awesome as well, Umbrella Chronicles is up there as well.

Then there a lot I loved, don't get me wrong, such as Bioshock, Halo, No More Heroes, Metroid Prime Pinball and Warhawk.

But ADW:DC... really no contest. Game's worth the money just for the soundtrack alone, and I'm not the kind of guy who usually pop vg's music into his Mp3 player.
Even more amazing when you put it in context... is a DS game ffs!

Super Mario Galaxy
No More Heroes
Space Invaders Extreme
Oblivion
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Ridge Racer 6
SEGA Superstars Tennis
NiGHTS Journey of Dreams
LocoRoco

Super Smash Bros Brawl. My only tiny complaint with it are the many remixes of main theme, but main theme is awesome, so it is okay.

if only the whole TP's soundtrack sounded like this one

then I'd have chosen this along with Galaxy. Such a superb piece of music.

Yes. Oh man, the trailer makes me nostalgic for those days right before Twilight Princess... when all the years of waiting was finally culminating, and they released this trailer on the Nintendo website and the entire thing basically scratched to a crawl and I had barely got in fast enough to see the whole thing while everyone at GAF was like "FIND A WAY TO RIP IT NOW"

memories.

the trailer was so good, alluded to much more than Twilight Princess actually ended up being... but still, phenomenal

Surprisingly, I was completely blown away by the Tomb Raider:Anniversary soundtrack, which has now become my all-time favorite. In particular, the Lost Island/Natla's theme rivals the best stuff coming out of Hollywood, with it's thunderous vocals and William-esque score.

true, true. Although I don't think TP is as bad as a lot of people say, this trailer certainly gives a totally different feeling about the game. In short, it makes it look like it's the most effing epic game ever, and it REALLY wasn't. It tried, but it failed on that.
I'll just say I religiously watched this intro every time I played the game, and it used to pump me to no end

final consideration: I never got why Nintendo is so happy to waste some of their best music in trailers, commercials and demos, and never let it appear in the games again. I still remember E3 2003, or maybe 2002, when there was that playable WW demo which featured a similar but definitely different Outset Island theme, which sounded better as well. Same goes with SMS, which has a very similar intro just after the credits, fgeaturinmg a really awesome remix of an old Mario theme..and guess what: never appears in the game. Another Sunshine example: the Japanese commercial

just listen to this. Awesome stuff. NEVER in the game as well. WTF?

/end rant

Super Mario Galaxy
No More Heroes
Zelda : Twilight Princess

Kondo, Yokota, Takada, Minegishi = <3
Well, I'm also hoping to hear and enjoy some original soundtracks from Mitsuda, Sakuraba or Ishikawa (Kirby) before the end of this gen...

[edit] By the way, I think the collection made of all the different Wii channels tunes definitely deserve an honorable mention. Seriously, those rock.

Many of the common responses have been said, but one I'd like to throw out there is Aquaria. A spectacular soundtrack, both ambient and inspirational. There is currently a rip floating around the internet, but it's rarely seeded.

There are also very few YouTube clips of Aquaria, but this trailer contains a good sampling of the music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqY9mDOw-UI

By the way, if you haven't bought Aquaria, friggin'...buy it.

But I definitely am more charmed with the soundtrack of The World Ends With You.

Definitely. Its vocal tracks are Ouendan-quality and they're actually good. This is a kick-ass game, despite the fact that I was able to turn the clock forward and level up all my pins instantly =O
