What's your opinion of Miyamoto?

The past few years he's said a lot of odd things, and he hasn't directed a game in nearly a decade now. Is he at all relevant to the industry as it is now? Will he ever be again? Is he just a really poorly spoken mouthpiece for the suits at Nintendo and nothing more? Discuss.

I think I'm going to go replay Super Mario Bros right now to celebrate Miyamoto.

Miyamoto came up with the idea for Pikmin. I give full credit to the two men that actually directed it. Those guys rock.

Seems like a nice guy. Never met him. Heard many good things about him. For making SUper Mario World, he will always have a special place in my life.

I know these things can be wrong, but it look like Pikmin 2 is just another example of Miyamoto taking all the credit for something he probably had little to nothing to do with. Remember back when everyone thought Wind Waker was another "Miyamoto Classic"?

Kind of an odd statement. At most, it's mostly people on message boards and overzealous media that either credit him for everything, or like to blame him for anything.

I think one of his biggest problems is that there's always a race to put words in his mouth.

I mean you seem to be annoyed by him, but more than likely he's just a proxy between you and someone else that believes he invented the wheel.

Mentiroso.

On another note, I do think he's becoming pretty much irrelevant(just like Nintendo itself) and gets way too much credit for games he was barely involved with. You know, he hasn't actually directed a game on his own for nearly twenty years(Zelda being it).

If Nintendo had triumphantly announced Miyamoto's direction of Wind Waker, DKJB, Pikmin, Pikmin 2, and this new Zelda, would anyone here know the difference?

Directors are often referred to as "Creative Director".

Well, Miyamoto actually created Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Pikmin.

Bullshit. This discussion has been covered several times before.

Mostly what frustrates me is that EGM interview with Aonuma from a few months back, where he tells us that he was never told of the unveiling of Zelda, and wasn't even credited as the director for a full year! When Miyamoto took the stage that year after the trailer, he knew what people would think and yet he did nothing to clarify the truth. In short: He's a glory hog.

Miyamoto doesn't direct games. He's said as much in several interviews. Why would anyone think he's directing the new Zelda?

To tell the truth, in Nintendo there aren't any official positions called "director" or "producer". Instead you have the kacho/bucho (section chief/department chief) system. The thing is, though, people overseas don't get that system. So when I started dealing with overseas folks, I wanted to sell myself to them, so I just wrote "producer" on my business card. With that title, people from overseas could recognize what I do, and it worked all right. Later I got yelled at from the head office about assigning myself titles, but... (laughs) Those are the two reasons I started calling myself a producer.

And I guess all of the wrangling over his exact title in this thread kind of make that point.

Huh? The interview, as I remember, wasn't anything like that. Iwata and miyamoto forget both forget to tell him about it.

You speak as if Miyamoto designs the Nintendo E3 presentations himself, when Iwata and the NoA and NCL marketing crews are probably the ones who have the biggest input, not the game designers and directors.

Although, Miyamoto is on the board of directors, so he probably has some input. But he's not the guy calling the shots.

He is a genius who has been roped into a managerial role.

He isnt as much of a glory hog as he is a bankable name. Many many more people have heard of "the creator of Super Mario" than Eiji Aonuma.

When Miyamoto is on, he is absolutely spectacular. However, I think his current managerial role, and the direction he is steering EAD, are ultimately better for gamers than if Miyamoto was just making games.

That being said, I do not think that Tezuka and Aonuma have the same kind of magic as Miyamoto. For all of their splendor, the Aonuma Zeldas do not have the same sense of awe as Miyamoto's.

They forgot to tell him? More likely, they knew that he isn't as recognizable as Miyamoto so they decided to parade him on stage instead.

Well, regardless of whether or not Miyamoto is the director of a game, he still gives input, and, when things aren't going well, such as what was going on with Metroid Prime, he steps in personally and flips the table over.

He's more of a quality control person & the guy who comes up with the basic whacky ideas, as a producer, than the guy who oversees the game's development from day 1 to when it goes gold, like a director. His role isn't as hands-on as the director, but he has just as much authority and oversees the quality of the overall product just as much as a director does.

even if he did take all the credit so what
Its his world the Zelda one. And Aonuma has to run all the progress through Miyamoto.
I believe he had hands on wih Pikmin2 when things wheren't going how he wanted, and NIntendogs was his pet project too according to Iwata
The guys a genius and NO ONE ON THIS FORUM OR ANY OTHER has a right to call him irrelevant.
HE out skills you all 1000times over

He'd still deserve a hell of a lot of respect even if everything he made after Super Mario Bros. was complete and utter garbage (on the level of Superman 64), because that game, which was his brainchild, single handedly resurrected the gaming industry.

And hearing that he's actually more than just a producer fills me with hope. He really should stop using that title, it gives us westerners the wrong idea as to what he does.

yes you could have. You just chose not to.

No, I was physically incapable of missing the opportunity. I have a built-in mechanism that forces me to post that pic when someone says udder! (<3 GaimeGuy)

In that case, I apologize for my insolence, and I forgive you for your utterly-useless (pun intended) post. (<3 Amir0x)

The problem is that little kids on message boards have no clue on how games are developed. They are made by teams, not one person, we need to stop turning men into deities.
