• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

what's your prefered FOV value?

I used to use 90 on my old 1680x1050 monitor, but I prefer 100 for 1080p. Borderlands 1 was pretty bad...instant headache and nausea -- I was glad that they addressed the FoV issue in the sequel.

I think I usually go with 95 or so...

Don't many Valve games default to something crazy like 75? A lot of them give me motion sickness if I can't change them.

90 usually. I play from the couch and some games I'll go 85 or even 80.

Anything less is uncivilized.

At a desk I'd go more toward 95-105.

HL2 might. TF2 has a pretty normal FoV.

I don't understand how HL2 passed QA without the beta testers puking their guts out. Maybe back then, non-widescreen was the norm.

It's not something that particularly concerns me. I tend to go for the default for any given game on the understanding that the challenge is probably balanced around having that much peripheral vision.

Usually I crank it as high as I can without editing any .txt or .ini files. 90 is ok, anything less makes me feel sick if I play more than 10minutes.

I really hope that we will get 90-100 as standard for the next gen consoles.

Anything below 80 is really hard to swallow.
It depends on how far away you are from the display. Sitting farther away means a smaller value to better match perspective from your own FOV. Sitting closer requires a higher value. There was a great video detailing the logistics behind choosing a default FOV I just can't find it.

For me its 85 since my monitor is at arm's length. If I had a smaller desk and it was closer 90-95.

Yes, that makes sense. If you sit further away, something around 80-85 could be ok.
75 is always horrible though.

I always leave it on default. I have no reason to change it.

ok

First Person 100-120 Third Person 80-90 though depends on how much space the character takes up and how close to the camera they are. Some times the UI scale is more of a problem.

I'm pretty much the opposite. I usually rock 100-120 in third person (Batman, Chivalry...), but 80-90 in first person.

I prefer an FoV of 130, but most games warp significantly when you set it that high, so I end up playing most games between 100 and 120.

There's at least one third-person game in particular where the default FOV is ridiculously narrow. I think it was Binary Domain.

Anything in the 80-100 range is fine for me. I can play games with lower FOVs (I won't get sick or anything), but it's just not as good.

Okay, bumping this thread because of something I posted in the Arkham Asylum vs. City thread:

And call me crazy, but one of the largest reasons I enjoyed City so much is because the camera was pulled back, especially when you sprint. I shit you not. I played it on PC sitting a foot away from my monitor as I usually do, and City's wider fov made the game feel so much more enjoyable.

Do you guys find it a bit obnoxious that some third-person games in recent years have taken after the Resident Evil school of the character taking up three-quarters of the screen? Arkham Asylum especially - I honestly have no idea why the camera in Asylum needed to be that goddamn close to Batman in a game about exploration.

90 minimum for a 16:9 display.

100 minimum for 16:10 display.

75 minimum for a classic 4:3 CRT.

It's bloody horrible that PC ports almost never get FOV sliders to address the problem of smaller FOVs that cater to console TV viewing distances. Recent games are fixing this issue though.

used to be 110 in 4:3. Not sure what my exact value is now. Most games that have an "FOV option" today lead to me maxing it at 90 and feeling... ok.
