What's your view on the definition of a gamer

I've seen some crazy stats out there. Over 70% of the population are gamers. Avg age of a gamer is 38. Senior citizen gaming segment is growing. Sounds like whoever is throwing these numbers around have a very loose definition of who a gamer is. Of course if you include people who play puzzle games on their phones during down times then of course everyone is a gamer. How do you define a gamer and how big do you think the gaming industry actually is?

I don't know and I don't care, I just like playing video games. I consider enjoying gaming same as enjoying movies, books and music. simple as that.

70%? Wow. That's a strong possibility. I still do not believe the average gamer is anywhere near 38 though. Maybe 25 to 32, but most gamers I meet are in their early 20's to late 20's and I've been gaming for awhile.

Gaming industry is undeniably colossal and I heard it somehow miraculously surpassed the movie industry. My definition of a gamer is someone who plays video games regularly. Yeah, even the people who play candy crush on their phones could be considered gamers as well. I think the difference is there are hardcore gamers and regular gamers though. Of course the hardcore are more enthusiastic or serious about their hobby while regular gamers are more casual or laidback who might game once a week as opposed to more often like a hardcore gamer.

Just speculation, but I'm sure people will have different definitions as to what they perceive as a gamer.

I know girls who play candy crush and these style games more than the guy who plays Cod. Does this mean they're more hardcore than the Cod PC player. See my problem....

It may be a more casual game but someone playing candy crush 4 hours a day is definitely more "hardcore" than someone playing CoD for an hour.

Somebody who plays actual games and not match 3 garbage on their phones. I could literally play candy crush with my dick. Don't quote me.

A gamer is someone who plays video games. That really isn't a hard thing to figure out. :P
Do girls who play candy crush consider themselves gamers?...Candy Crush is a video game.. but my female friends dont identify themselves as a gamer and think we're a bunch of nerds who need to wear deodorant more often.

Someone that regularly plays video games.
^^This.

If someone doesn't want to identify as a "gamer" for whatever reason, that's up to them, but if someone plays games regularly than I consider them a gamer. Doesn't matter what games they play.

You'll likely find many perspectives of what's meant by "gamer".

In general, I find the term mostly fitting to people to whom gaming has had a large impact on their life and/or leisure time. That means as a collective you share certain experiences that bind you together, though obviously it's more divided into certain major clusters of categories. You could also be a mobile gamer then and share some experiences that other clusters of gamers don't get, but other people into mobile gaming recognize and empathize with. You might belong to many of these categories, recognizing experiences from many types of gamers. There's also a large element of time and age cohort, especially related to childhood and adolescence, where the experience of gaming and a community of gamers is deeply connected to being a part of that history, of growing up with generations of games.

That's how you'll also see large gaps in regards to a community of gamers, depending on what they grew up with, to whom they'll be able to share a sense of community with. It's a historical phenomenon, deeply connected to a sense of community in shared experiences.

We also have entire online sites based around people who do nothing but "play" games and refuse to call themselves gamers because they don't like the term. Regardless of what they want to call themselves, they are still gamers. That is the very definition of a gamer: someone who plays games.

If you look like a skunk, smell like a skunk, and sound like a skunk - you are a skunk.

For me, a gamer is someone who plays games as a hobby (more than one) or is a gaming enthusiast.

Sure everyone plays games (video games, board games, card games, etc), but if all you play is one game for hours on end, that just means you're a fan of that game; not a gamer. It's like calling someone who really only re-watches The Terminator over and over a movie buff. Or someone who has a bookshelf filled with just Harry Potter books an avid reader. Or the old man in the park that plays Chess all day a board game enthusiast.

The key for me, when it comes to the label of gamer, is that its a hobby -- something you enjoy learning about, participating in and broadening your understanding of.

My personal definition would be someone who holds gaming as one of their primary hobbies, or spends significant time on the activity, similar to a runner, or a painter, or a writer.

Yeah, this is interesting...

I had to run for the bus the other day. Guess that makes me a runner.

No, because a runner would invest money into expensive shoes, clothes, clubs, etc. And spend time every night running and regularly going to big events such as marathons and fun-runs, etc.

The same thing for gamers. I care about my game collection, my gaming abilities, my completed games, etc. And perhaps also knowing about the industry, latest trends, traditional games, etc.

One does not simply become a gamer by playing 'Match-3' apps.

If all you play is phone games I personally don't really consider you a gamer. I practically am to that point in my life now and the more I move to just phone games away from PC/Xbox/PS4/Nintendo stuff the less I consider myself a gamer anymore. Phone games are (the vast majority of them anyway) just casual things for the in between moments while doing other things.

Yet a lot of people enjoy watching movies but are not dedicated movie critics, or watching TV, etc.

If someone enjoys a video game they could be a gamer. Whether it is barbies horse racing or elder scrolls it doesn't matter IMO.

Smartphones also include emulators and many polished games that are also released on desktop and portable systems. Eg Metal Slug 3 on Steam was based on the mobile version. Katrielle Layton had a 3ds/Android/IOS release. Chrono Trigger and FF Tactics were ports from older consoles. Shmups library on IOS is rich too.
If someone plays such games, even with touch controls, I consider them gamers too.

Nowadays I would define a gamer as somebody who spends little time playing and most of the time complaining on social platforms about unfulfilled expectations.

So is being a gamer all about self-identification?

Why does there need to be a label? Why cant i just playing games?

No but seriously, I define gamers as people who have a passion for gaming as something they enjoy. Whether its putting 500 hrs into a single game like wow or fortnite to buying several games a year or even just those who can only afford a couple hours every other day.

If it helps, those statistics tend to be banded about by people like me who like to use them to introduce articles or essays concerning the social side of gaming. Or they're used in PowerPoint presentations by developers because they make nice sound-bytes. I'd suggest nobody take them seriously as they're really shallow points that only exist to reflect on a previously established idea that people who play games are sweaty basement nerds (not judging). We should be getting beyond it soon.

My personal definition of a gamer is: can you hold a conversation about games (plural). If yes, then you probably play enough games to qualify as a gamer (hurray!).

So is being a gamer all about self-identification?

I think it's either about self-identification or identification from others, yeah. It's a label.

When will the title gamer completely disappear like it is with movies and or music for example? You hear nobody ever say I am a music listener or movie watcher, we just do those things. Considering the gaming industry is bigger than music or movies all we have to ask is basically do you play games? Yes? Cool.

a gamer is someone who knows how to handle inputs and outputs with sufficient adaptability

violence, speed, momentum

A "gamer" is just a person who plays videogames regularly (not rarely). There are different types. The most useful distinction to me is between "casual" gamers and "core" (or enthusiast) gamers.
