When did "white knighting" become such a popular phrase?

yeah but thanks to the internet and its droves of sexual frustrated people it's become an insult towards anyone who argues against sexism.

I dunno. It's used more to describe someone like RiskyChris, who is actually quite sexist and patronizing.

After he left it was in usage against others such as myself. I was not happy about it.

People use it without knowing what it means. Either that, or I'm off on what it means, lol.

No but I recall a time when I was being called it the most on this forum despite being a woman. Clearly I just want to fuck broads right?

Some of them are seemingly asexual. Those ones are somehow creepier.

Thanks for the interesting responses.

To be clear, the question wasn't "what does it mean" or "when was the phrase first coined," but "when did it become so popular?"

Just seems to me that it gets hurled around at the drop of a hat (er... helmet) here these days. Struck me as curious. So I suppose part of the thread was "am I crazy in thinking it's being used a ton more around here lately?"

I don't know what's worse "white-knighting" or "defense force."

Werd. Same thing really. Reading someone's mind through the internet and deciding they don't really think or feel wat they say they think or feel.
The mark of a the bored or the cowardly.

I clean up attacks on LGBTs and minorities and so forth and it's mostly all applause, but when people are sexist or outright stalking women and they get taken out the white knight card inevitably gets played. Maybe not so explicitly, but there's a lot of talk behind the scenes.

There's a lot of resentment at play there, like, "oh, you're social equals now, right? Then deal with all this harassment because it wouldn't be a problem for a dude. What's this special treatment?" Prominent female posters immediately get labeled as attention whores, despite inherently getting attention from the male userbase just for existing, if they identify as female.

It's a problem. For a while there were jokes that GAF had more trans members than female members, because we tackled that issue and got a healthy trans community established, but women were still treated like they were on 4chan. So that's the final frontier, conquering this garbage. We've made some inroads but it's still a work in progress.

But really, it's interesting to read that EvilLore and the Mods/Admins are "tackling issues" on the site.
I never really realized that there was active shaping happening with the moderation. It makes sense to me and I dig it, but I never considered it. I guess it IS a community and largely anonymous, so if left alone you get 4chan. It's neat to see some inside baseball stuff like this.

If there was a podcast or blog or regularly updated "state of the forum" thread I'd read the shit out of it

Fantastic post that summarizes some issues that still need to be worked out. Bookmarking for future knightly usage.

One component of it is a whack-a-mole game where truly terrible posters are banned. The rest has to do pervasive attitudes that a lot of people sort of fall into, which are unfortunately a lot harder to change.

I don't mean to sound ignorant of the internet terms, but it would've been nice if the OP included some sort of a definition and an example of "White Knighting" someone care to tell me what it is exactly?

I knwo what "Defense Force" is and having read some of the post here, it sounds like its exact same thing, can someone care to point out the difference and what WK actually is? thanks.

Accusing someone of being a white knight is accusing a male of agreeing with or defending a woman, women's issues, feminism or most commonly female poster soley to impress them or gain favor. Basically saying someone is such a hapless nerd that they would contort their actual feelings on a subject to impress a woman they will never meet. Or that they are being irrational ly defensive of women for some other reason.

It happens, but the card gets played 10x (out of my ass) more than it actually happens to my eyes.

The term white knight comes out most often in violence against women threads.

I have thought that I've noticed what he's talking about over the years, actually. I think that mods seem more consistent and responsive when it comes to LGBT issues in particular (since I have been in topics involving those things since around the time I came out). I don't know what changes specifically have been made to moderation policy behind the scenes, but it seems like there's less patience for that sort of cute "trying to toe the line" arguments. I think that I've noticed something similar happening with other issues (like race or gender) as well, though I can't really remember those topics as well going back years since I often kept out of those.

But whatever the actual policy changes happening behind the scenes, I feel like the overall atmosphere is much improved.

One component of it is a whack-a-mole game where truly terrible posters are banned. The rest has to do pervasive attitudes that a lot of people sort of fall into, which are unfortunately a lot harder to change.

Right.

The particularly difficult thing with gender issues is that it seems like some of them are nearly ubiquitous. You can see that sort of thing pop up in a topic like this one, where people - who I at least never would have expected to - made arguments based on those sorts of pervasive attitudes, in that case pervasive attitudes (myths) about rape and sexual assault. I think that the moderation culture in general towards these issues has gone a long way towards helping with that issue of pervasive attitudes, though.

Just curious.... I don't recall it being so commonly used even, say, two years back.

Seems much more prevalent today.

EDIT: Just to be clear, referring specifically to GAF, but if anyone has any info about its usage elsewhere, that would probably be interesting, too.
It became more prevalent after the release of The Dark Knight.

Its what sexually frustrated misogynists use to describe anyone who thinks women should be treated like regular human beings.

also, they love crap like Pick Up Artist and The Game
because when that shit inevitably backfires on them, they can blame women instead of themselves

lol at people acting like there have been no actual cases of white knighting, outside of Risky Chris, on this forum. There definitely have.

People throw around the card way too much, but it definitely does happen.

Haha, "RiskyChris" the guy didn't make the slight effort to stay on topic with the thread he just started going off about the political correctness of the term "tranny"... hollie shit that was hilarious!

thanks for the expalonations guys, I know exactly what it is now.

EDIT: I just got to the "Jesus Christ" part LOL!! maaan that thread is masterpiece theater.gif.jpeg worthy!

Still my favorite insult was the guy who thought I was a man and told me to dress as a dish for halloween since women love doin' dishes.

Whenever I use the term "white knight," this is what I'm trying to convey. The phrase has definitely been perverted into something different than what it was originally intended to be on this forum... it's gotten to the point where the word is slung around whenever someone doesn't jump in on women-bashing, when it should be reserved for sycophants or kiss-asses who "defend women" not for the sake of defending someone, but for the sake of getting in women's good graces. It's slimy, in this way.

It's the fucking dumbest, most insidious phrase ever popularised by the internet -- almost exclusively used by idiots.

Too true. At least a certain level of shame is finally being attached to usage of the term, so that its use has fallen to the wayside a bit. Lots of reprehensible sheep on the net don't properly learn until a derogatory meme has been properly twisted around to focus on them.

I thought the definition was basically someone who is patronizing to women.

"you can't handle this cause you're a woman, but don't worry I'm here to save you!"

I think GAF needs a Women's Studies major to come in and clear the air on this thing. Because if I ever get banned for being sexist I'm gonna flip my lid !

Clear the air on what? Dumbass internet projection lingo?
one of those threads , I'm seeing that using "bitch" in certain ways can lead to a ban. But its not clear how. And I don't normally use "white knighting" but this stuff about pervasive attitudes has me slightly worried :/

So don't call people bitch and don't assume a feminist pov makes someone a white knight.

Not familiar with the rest of his history, but what am I supposed to find so repugnant about him in that thread? He criticized the use of a bigoted epithet and when those who used it doubled down and defended it, he kept trying to explain its offensiveness. Since using slurs like that is now bannable and consistently called out by other members, I'd say he's been vindicated. His tone may not have been the most effective but it's not like he was inherently wrong.

RiskyChris was aggressive and annoying but he was usually correct.

That you think him a white Knight rather than simply a good person lacking in tact is actually indicative of why a phrase like "white knight" would ever get so popular in the first place.

I don't there was anything wrong with what RiskyChris said generally. It was "how" he said it, that was the problem.

Wow @ that Wesley Snipes thread. I never seen a thread get derailed so hard in my life. At least most thread derails vaguely stem from the original subject.

Hey can a white knight class advance to a paladin? What does it take?

Currently I'm a dark knight, bros, but I feel like walking the path of light.

Also, I see some posters overusing "butthurt". Really dismissively too. "Oh, I can't argue my point, so these people must just be butthurt."

If you want to be a paladin you need to be lawful good, and well, you're just... not.

"When" was probably a factor as well.

And this topic is odd. I was beginning to think I was the only person who thought that he was genuine in his motivations and basically right.
