Where are the FPS games on the 3DS?

So much ignorance in this thread!

DS had some pretty good FPS games and they controlled great with the stylus. Some of you just came in here trolling!

3rd parties only develop games of a genre if there is an demand for this genre. The DS had Metroid Prime: Hunters, which I have no doubt contributed to the appearing of FPS.

Unfortunately, Nintendo forgot this and I counted in 3rd parties to fulfill the holes. Without a game like, hypothetically, "Metroid Prime Hunters 2" to show there is a demand for FPSs, 3rd parties didn't develop anything.

It's more or less the same situation that appeared on Wii. Nintendo should had bet on Metroid Prime 3, rather than Red Steel, by giving the spotlight at the E3 2006. But it did not, and the Wii's FPS scenario was severely damaged as result.

Or shooter games.

The DS had several and some, in my opinion, were pretty decent. Metroid Prime Hunters was a pretty fun arena shooter (though a bad Prime game), the Call of Duty games weren't too bad, the Renegaade kid games were decent and I thought that the Brothers in Arms game was pretty good.

The touchscreen is good for shooter games like these (better than a analog stick) and the improved hardware could really benefit full 3D games such as FPS or shooters.

So where are they? I guess there's Kid Icarus (I guess debatable) or MGS3 but there should be more.

Look, I agree with you.

But almost everyone else agrees that we are insane.

That's why we don't get them any more.

They gave you crab claw. May be good games, but not good for the body.

Nothing (except for a mouse) that doesn't have a neutral position (touch screen included) is better than an analog stick.

I can't say I'd be too excited about the analog/pen combo for FPS games.
I had a lot of trouble playing Liberation Maiden since it required me to aim with the pen and move with the analog. Since I'm left-handed, holding a pen accurately with my right hand was terribly difficult. I ended up never getting past the first mission because it was so hard for me to control.
This limitation seems to be only with pen controls as I use mouse and keyboard fine in a right handed configuration.

The people that are skeptical about the touchscreen controls haven't played Metroid Prime: Hunters, shit was super-precise. It controlled much more accurate than any other shooter I've played on a controller. Though yeah, hand cramp was an issue after extended play.

So yeah, I'd love a good FPS for the 3DS.

It's because Activision and EA are MIA.

Everyone else doesn't seem to bother with portable FPS games, at least not on Nintendo's handhelds.

Sucks, because I would eat them up.

Oh, so you enjoy FPS on iOS then?

Touchscreen doesn't mean "touch-and-shoot-here", but more of a virtual stick type of control. It worked beautifully in Metroid Hunters - would day1 a 3DS sequel in a heartbeat. And I gotta agree with the OP, there aren't any real games like this on the 3DS, and I think that it's library would really benefit from a great exploration-based game that used this type of control scheme.

If Nintendo brings this fine piece back THEN we can have FPS games for the 3DS.

Not saying that stylus controls are good for FPS but the worst thing about FPS on iPhone is blocking like 90% of the screen with my hand.

The thing that brings stylus controls down is that they completely kill the use of buttons because your hand is occupied holding a pen.

On Vita and Frankenstick I can aim, and have full use of all of the buttons. Gyroscope functions can aid in aiming so its no big deal. Button use means more actions to perform in a game, and not a dumbed down experience like Metroid Hunters where you have to double tap the screen to jump.

Oh, I agree with you! I'm just saying that one might prefer one terrible thing over the other :P FPS on 3DS could work with lock-on like the Prime games or a single analog scheme like GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.

Well, only "FPS" I can remember playing on DS was Metroid Prime and it was just appalling to play. Some of the worst controls I have ever encountered in a game... like ever.

3DS may have an analogue stick, but it only has one, and I can remember playing FPS titles on my PSP like that and the experience was... well... not pleasant to say the least.

On 3DS, when I try to imagine camera controls for 3D games, all I can think of is Kid Icarus... and that shit was just the worst. Poster child for why touch screens are the worst way to control a camera in a 3D title.

That second analogue add on might make FPS' playable on it though, but without a test case of some sort it's mere speculation at this point.

Forget that mess. Killzone eats its lunch.

Bro-fist.

Killzone Mercenary is really in a class all it's own on the handheld FPS front. Amazing game.

Its not a good genre for handhelds to begin with, and western devs don't make handheld games. The only one I can think of who will make an attempt would be renegade kid.

Eh, double tapping on the screen to jump wasn't that bad. It was good during fire fights because you could aim right away. You could probably say the same thing of letting go of the right analog stick to press "A" to jump on a controller.

I'd love a first person Metroid on my 3DS, but it would have to include support for the second stick attachment.
Button aiming absolutely sucks. Sure we did it on N64 and more recently with PSP, but it truly is awful.

I think analog stick and face buttons should be more than efficient of a control scheme, we survived Goldeneyes with that. 3D FPS on a handheld could be kinda cool, novelty game.

In a dual stick shooter, I could jump towards cover, switch weapons in mid air, crouch behind cover upon landing, and then pop up to fire off shots at an enemy.
You simply couldn't perform something like that with simple stylus controls. It'd be too much, and most certainly unreliable. Plus you'd have to take your eyes off the action to tap icons to switch weapons or perform a different action. I only ever played the demo of Hunters that came with my launch 3DS, but I'd wager the battles couldn't get as heated as a standard dual stick shooter, because the player would be too overwhelmed.

Anyway, that's my two cents. I'd love to see some FPS on 3DS though! Just support the frankenstick and we're good!

Have you ever tried the thumb stylus that came with the DS phat? It's amazing for fps. I would consider it superior actually.

Same here. Accuracy and speed of the touch screen with the thumb stylus is amazing and shits all over dual analog (to be fair, almost everything is more precise than DA aiming anyway)

The biggest problem is ergonomics. Most players weren't able to cope with holding the DS that way.

Kid Icarus' shite controls had nothing to do with the touch screen, and everything with it's implementation. How anyone alive on this planet could think that introducing a dead zone on a touch screen as well as swiping to turn was a good idea is beyond me.

DS shooters were insanely more precise and faster to aim than anything on any DA setup.

It's frustrating to see that the shoddy ergonomics hinder an otherwise brilliant control scheme from being implemented more often.

It's impressive how many people feel that an analog stick is inferior to the DS FPS control scheme; considering how much faster and accurate it is. It's like using a mouse.

ugh, no... I feel like I am going to break something trying to juggle a stylus and a console that is already to small for my hands.
