Where does the Monster Hunter series go from here?

Capcom doesn't make many games without someone else footing at least part of the bill these days. Ninty will continue to pony up for Monster Hunter and keep it exclusive on Switch.
This. Nintendo publishes, and advertises for them in directs alot. Its too good of a deal for Capcom to abandon that. mh5 hopefully for Switch. Really don't see anything after XX for 3ds.

Where does it go from here? Not where everyone is assuming it's going and the day people realise will be a glorious day on GAF. I predict a lot of salt.

Monster Hunter is not a portable game.

I predict Monster Hunter 5 will be Switch exclusive.

But Monster Hunter V will be on the PS4/PC. And it'll be the replacement for Frontier.

I've been egging for a true multi platform release since the PSP releases. I don't understand how fans of the series can argue against the idea. The franchise honestly deserves more than it currently has.

They've got to keep it on Nintendo platforms because only Nintendo fans are ok with buying a 15 year old game again for the 10th time. Monster Hunter must have the best sales to cost ratio of any game series ever.

After the all the visibility Nintendo has given the series it would be crazy to assume that it won't be on a Nintendo console at least.

Going forward, Switch is probably the ideal platform for the mainline series. One of the biggest reasons why Monster Hunter gained it's wild success and popularity in Japan is because of it being on a portable device and offering up to 4 player local co-op: something that can't be done for MonHun on home consoles unless you setup a lan party.

There's also the fact that Nintendo has been supporting the franchise quite heavily in recent times.

However, unless Switch is a runaway success in Japan, I think that Capcom may be reluctant to move on from the 3DS due to it's large install base and will still end up releasing the next entry after MHXX on the 3DS with the Switch version merely being a HD port (similar to how they handled MH3U for 3DS and WiiU).

The series is ready for a HD overhaul. And with that investment it makes perfect sense to go multi platform to recoup those costs. PS4/Switch/PC.

With the portable market switching mainly to mobile the series needs to find some traction on consoles again. There is nothing that makes MH particularly a portable game, finding random people to play with is just as simple doing so via the internet. What besides ad-hoc matchmaking makes this game portable?

That said, if Switch is a major success the franchise will stay happily where it is but it doesn't detract from the fact there is a big investment to make HD assets.

Maybe n3ds exclusive, like that FE musou. Switch is the most sensible platform, but by the time the successor to MHXX comes, o3ds will be "too old"

It will probably stay with Nintendo because Capcom want to play it safe and Nintendo need to keep hold of the MH series since they have nothing else to fit that gap.

MS could throw cash at Capcom for a MH reboot for Win 10, xb1 and Scorpio. After the cancellation of scalebound, MH would be a perfect buy for them to wrap up.

Personally go multiformat. All systems play a rebooted MH game, while also keeping the Generations/cross stuff on handhelds.

Based on the multiple threads about this we've had already, the reasons are:

- Nintendo support (promotion and servers)
- portable install base on 3DS
- fear of splitting the player base across multiple platforms
- lukewarm reception to other hunting games like God Eater on consoles
- budget concerns for development of assets

So there are some reasons for why people argue against the idea. Personally I would love to play a PC version, but I bet it would sell like shit.

Xbox One sold 35 consoles last week. It needs to be a LOT of money from MS for anything like that to happen.

In Japan yes. Capcom needs push harder with MH. Switch can keep the generations/stories/cross ect, and focus around Japan.

Rebooted Monster Hunter will push wider and should go multiformat.

I never understand people's desire for monster hunter to be anything but monster hunter.

I think people just get carried away with the word reboot, I doubt Capcom want vanilla 5 to sell poorly like vanilla 3 if it was released on Switch in early/mid 2018.
5 is going to be a revamped HD engine

Having spent a stupid amount of time with 4U, I completely agree - it definitely won me over and them retooling the series to appeal the west more with stuff like a "seamless open world" or simplifying the combat would lose me again. Honestly, I'd be happy with a port of Generations on Switch, since I haven't played that one yet, but a fully fledged Monster Hunter 5 would be perfect. In fact, when that first Switch trailer dropped all I could think about is how perfect it'd be for Monster Hunter.

Agreed. I love some of the combat variations etc they have added but I want them to go further again. Same with the mobility options, I want more than hopping up and down ledges etc. They could really add some cool stuff to MH without sacrificing the core that makes it MH.

Also, actual HD assets etc would be amazing. The 3ds tech really holds back the potential for MH. Switch will be nice but still not the jump many expect from new MH.

MHXX HD (like MH3Ultimate HD for Wii U) for Switch/PS4 early 2018
MH 5 PS4/Switch late 2018

So, what you're saying is that the PS4 becomes the main platform for Monster Hunter next year?

Avoiding PC revenue would actually be a major mistake, I highly doubt Capcom would do that if Monster Hunter went multiplatform.

I'm hoping the series does goes multiplatform, but I'm fine with a Switch version since I'll have that platform.

The safest guess is that they are staying on the Switch and are holding back an announcement of MHXX HD until the 3DS game is out. Because 3DS MH is keeping Capcom alive and sabotaging its sales would be bad.

great you reminded me of this horrible thread

It's crazy to me how much general disbelief there is that yes, there are in fact people who like how MH plays. Throwing out the huge fanbase to chase after more western sales is such a Capcom kind of thing to do, but I'm hoping they just keep making the weird old MH I like.

People who don't play Monster Hunter sure like to talk about Monster Hunter...

There's nothing I want more than for them to start playing it though. So I hope Capcom gives them a way to.

Even though if and when that happens I expect the usual WHY IS THIS BIG SWORD SO SLOW? WHERE IS THE LOCK-ON?

I guess this is what hardcore Souls fans feel like when people starting asking for huge changes in those games.

If we don't have niche games that appeal to a particular demographic, then this industry gets very boring very quickly.
