Where the Heck is Advance Wars 3DS

Building black bombs is a useful skill toi have.

I disagree. The extra movement can mess with a human opponent. Sure, the 190/110 bonus should one-shot just about everything, but it's not necessary if there aren't any ridiculous bottlenecks on the map. Mobility > power. Ask Eagle.

Sami isn't as overpowered as Sensei, Hachi and Colin in my experience. Every city I recapture, they just take it back with overwhelming forces. Competent human players won't fall for the HQ capture.

Kanbei would shit all over 80/100 Colin. Black bombs aside. Fuck black bombs.

black bombs are nothing to my infantry walls!

Playing Days of Ruin right now on my little girls' 3DS when I have time. I love this series as well and would love to see a new game. I think we are long overdue for a full blown console version. The Wii U is perfect system to have it on with the ability to transfer gameplay to the controller.

what would be the difference between a full blown console version and the handicapped retarded handheld version

can't wait for them to sexualize this

For starters, she needs to be younger. Otaku fear (older) women, they need something young, innocent, and pure to make them feel comfortable. That or her sex appeal needs to be amped up considerably so she is not a threat. Tits should be bigger. Replace boots with high heels.

am I sensing jealousy here?

I think advance wars is like pokemon in that there's a large group of people that look at stats, abilities and other stuff to choose the best character to use while another large group just uses whoever looks cool, even in situations where it's a bad choice. The first group would favor the balanced Days of Ruin, while the second would prefer the unrestrained Dual Strike

Eagle forever, land-only maps have nothing on my scarf full of swag

Her smallish breasts are a sign of youth, and she's showing way too much skin, like, look at her belly, her slender, fit and huggable belly. And female military members is a well established fetish, not that I would know anything about that...

My mains are Max, Eagle, Sami and Kanbei, but I'm a pretty bad player. *shrug*

I also liked Gengar, Gyarados and Jolteon before they got OU, so there!

What the frak are you talking about?
Send it to IS, we may just be able to save the franchise.

I'm not saying her design doesn't appeal to some people, but it doesn't appeal to enough people or rather the right people. We need to go deeper wider.

Before the thread is derailed by Fire Emblem: Awakening bitterness and unfair bashing further, I would like to play Days of Ruin, but I only have a Japanese 3DS. Does anyone know if I can play an import copy on there? Is it a good entry into the series if it's my first one?

My main man was eagle. I will admit that AW:DS got a bit overboard with its superpowers when I could strike 3 times with my team of COs. However I disliked how they didn't include war room or any of those fun challenge modes in Days of Ruin. I really liked the turn, money and time mode from DS. The real time battle game was a bit odd and clunky but I still had fun with it.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. It's lacking in features compared to other entries, but the gameplay is possibly the best.

I can wait as much as needed, but a new 3DS (or WiiU even, if they want to) game with a full-fledged online would be excellent. Also while it's not popular in Japan, it would help Nintendo a little bit in western regions where the 3DS could enjoy a little boost. I feel there is a high demand for a sequel from the internet people I have asked.

The thread derail... it has started.

Man I want a new Advance Wars so bad. I'm a big fan of the series and I've never been hooked by Fire Emblem so it's a bad turn of events for me that Advance Wars has declined in popularity against Fire Emblem.

I think eShop could be the way to go. A lot of the Advance Wars games are actually surprisingly bloated in scope, and so a simple eShop game with async online multiplayer and/or async street pass multiplayer would be satisfying to fans and be cheaper to produce. Make it small in scope and provide extra expansion scenarios or war room maps via DLC.

Yes the game is region free. Yes it's a great game to get into the series 'cause it starts with a completely new scenario/gameworld and it's the best in the series. Plus the game eases you in quite nicely into it.

Although, the other 3 share the same world and are more lighthearted so there's a certain charm that's missing in DoR.

Ds games aren't regionlocked on the 3ds as far as I know, only dsiware and 3ds games.

Both games are pretty similar, but Days of Ruin has a darker atmosphere and is more balanced, at the price of some character variety. Dual Strike has characters with bonuses and powers centered around cities, roads, non-infantry non-artillery land units, sea units, for example. And powers/superpowers are more varied (launch 3 missiles, increase att/def according to how much money you have, deal some damage to all enemy units and lower their fuel to half and so on). If you want a colorful over the top strategy game, pick DS, if you want something more subdued and balanced, pick DoR.

Oh, right, DS has a war room, which brings a lot of replay value, while DoR has online play, but I've never used it so I can't comment on how it works. If I'm not mistaken you have to finish a match in one go, no saving and resuming

edit: Right, I had forgotten DS's story is connected to the previous games. Even then, from what I remember knowing the plot of the previous games wasn't critical to understand what's going on. I'd say look for a summary in warswiki if you really want to know. Characters pages have their bios separated by game, handy to read as you go or before jumping in

There's a game on the eShop DSiWare called Glory Days which is similar to AW, a lot smaller and simpler, but at ÂŁ1.80, I can't recommend it enough. Great value for money. If you like Advance Wars, you'll get your monies worth out of it. It's arcade like, you need to survive rounds and clock points up.

STATS:

Total time played: 11:21
No. Times Played: 15
Average time played: 0:45
First Played: 30/07/2012
Last Played: 11/08/2012

If you liked this, it would do you good to know that it is actually a sequel to a DS game of the same name. Although the retail one is actually a war sidescroller where you control vehicles such as helicopters and planes. It's fun enough, worth checking out.

There was also a GBA entry IIRC

I can always count on ponpo to prove my point.

Superior because of glasses + hair, not whatever amateur psychoanalytic nonsense you think you've figured out.

Also a Wii U advance wars seems okay but what would the TV display? The battle sequences? Seems like a waste.

I'd love it if you could select groups of units in the touchscreen and give them commands so that they move automatically each turn, kinda like fire emblem radiant down, but more directed. The stylus would be perfect for that

And an asymmetrical mode could be great, the side with the tv has some form of advantage but can only see the tv screen, while the wiipad side can see everything

Those sound good, but the first suggestion at least is just the tablet. There are tons of possible uses for it, but I was talking about the actual TV. If it's just a larger display of the battles / the map then it seems like a waste, IMO.

Thanks for the info! I thought about ordering it off Amazon when I bought about 12 DS games a couple of months ago, but never did. Will pick it up next time I order through them.

I was joking, but there is truth in what I said. That character you posted is definitely otaku bait.

Bring on a new Advance Wars. I'm about ten hours into Days of Ruin at the moment.

I'm new to the series but it doesn't seem to have changed a massive amount from its Famicom origins (this isn't necessarily a bad thing IMO). That said, what would you guys like to see in a new iteration of the series on the 3DS platform?

I personally haven't used max that often, i'm just restating what I saw in the forums.

Yeah sami is nowhere near as broken as the broken trio, but she's still "overpowered" (boost infantry.) Victory march is good even without the ability to instantly checkmate an opponent; weakened infantry can now cap any building and your infantry units becoming gods.

Kanbei = / = rest of the cast, most of which operate at 100/100. 80/100 is acceptable against 100/100 (see AW1 Sturm) if you have good enough d2d, and Colin's is by far the best in the game.

Black Bombs are good thing my friend, very very good...

I want a Advance Wars/Metal Slug crossover where you choose COs and also hero units of super veichles and soldiers with boosted stats.

I'm just glad that DoR fixed the ridiculous balancing problem. DS just tried too hard to introduce new COs and new ideas, but the new ideas only made it harder for the game to be balanced. If they do a DoR2, I really hope that they don't go that route.

If were wishing for games that should be on 3DS
While not a nintendo game.

I'm still pretty sad Activision killed off DJ Hero 3DS.
Was really looking forward to that, I LOVE DJ Hero

As for Advanced Wars
I'm torn if I want more Days or Ruin or settings more like the original games.

as a guy that never played Advance Wars, what's it like? Fire Emblem with tanks or what? i know it gets lots of love on here.

It's turn base tactics so yeah it's like Fire Emblem but remove the rock paper scissors element and instead it's capture the enemy cities/bases or destroy all their units to win.

You also control characters called "Commanding Officers" who can activate special powers after a certain amount of damage is received/inflicted.

It's pure turn-based tactics without any of the RPG garbage or other fluff; it's closer to a European boardgame than Fire Emblem or other Japanese SRPGs.

huh. so turn based strategy then? any story to it?

Yes, but it's completely forgettable and not at all the focus of the game. Days of Ruin was their big push to add more story elements for the Western audience, which meant lots of angsty melodrama and nu-metal, but it doesn't really make much of a difference.

Give me more sprites! I love Advance War's art scheme. It's so zany and colourful. I was disappointed with the direction of DoR, although the characters were still great.

IrishNinja,

Another important difference is that units under your control don't have identities. An air unit is an air unit, not a pilot named Mira who's trying to find her long-lost brother (/lover). That means that they are expendable, much more numerous, and much less precious. You're expected to lose units. You can also create new units from the funds that you collect each Turn, the amount dependent on how many cities you've captured.

I've never actually beaten Days of Ruin. I got stuck on one chapter and haven't gone back. I think I will - got that urge

Ummm, Advance Wars is in fact all about Rock, Paper Scissors, only with over a dozen units instead of 3 and having to deal with the production side of war, movement, and all that jazz.

The most recent one, Days of Ruin, has quite an extensive, and pretty damn dark for Nintendo, story. The previous three, 1, 2 and Dual Strike all take place with a different story. These three games are all very colourful and cartoonish, and have a sort of bizarrely lighthearted and comical storyline considering that everyone is at war with one another.
