• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Which developer's games would you feel comfortable buying sight unseen?

Retro Studios

Also, any game directed by Masahiro Sakurai (even though I didn't enjoy Kid Icarus Uprising as much as some people here on GAF).

Nintendo and FROM.

I self imposed a media blackout on Bloodborne as soon as I could and bought a PS4 in anticipation already. Literally all I know about it is the first post in that very first "leaked images" thread.

Are you sure about that? From makes a lot of other games, like Armored Core, Another Century's Episode games, and various licensed works. Not all of these are good.

Bioware.
Retro Studios
Bethesda
CDPR

Studio that used to be there but that I do not trust anymore would be DICE. Real shame what they have been putting out lately.

oooh sweet list for me

Naughty Dog
Santa Monica
CD Projekt
Ready At Dawn (ambitious developers)
Media Molecule
Rockstar
Sucker Punch
Insomniac Studios
Maybe Guerrilla Games and 343 industries

Hmm...

Rockstar
Naughty Dog

I would add From Soft but they make many other things that arent necessarily great. Souls Team sure, Miyazaki lead teams even more so.

EDIT: Add Frictional Games in there as well.

Smilebit

if they'd still exist. : (

This makes me sad :/

EAD and Sakurai are pretty much it, I think? A few months ago I would have easily added Bungie to the list, and honestly I still probably would, but... less.

This thread will yield quite a number of justifications for the choices made; in the end they would be examples of how we are enablers of the current state of games, esp. AAA.

Honestly for me, no company fits that bill. Even though you said previews and what not are off limits, I do my research about the game before I usually buy it. Even Rockstar games and Naughty Dog I usually wait till they are on sale or in a bundle (I just got the ps4 bundle with GTA5 and TLOU, I want to play Guilty Gear in December and it's a good deal). They really aren't the type of games I replay but they are solid, I feel fine about not buying them brand new at full price.

But the closest games I would buy brand new would be an action game from Itsuno. I loved DMC3 and 4, and Dragon's Dogma, even though they have their share of problems. But I personally like to wait and hear about the limitations of the game, since even though Dragon's Dogma was my favorite rpg of last gen, it could be better on a technical level.

Naughty Dog: After The Last of Us I can trust whatever game they develop on whatever genre they tackle.

Platinum Games: After Vanquish, Bayonetta and Rising, I'm sure their games are the kind I will definitely enjoy.

As often mentioned so far:

Several EAD teams
GameFreak
P-Studio
Naughty Dog

Ah yes, add Retro. And I guess Intelligent Systems.

Retro Studios
Sony Santa Monica
Nintendo EAD Tokyo

That's about it. Of course I love studios like Platinum and Naughty Dog, but they suffer missteps here and there.

Nintendo
Access Games
Treasure
Sunsoft

Long ago Capcom, Konami, Rare and Bungie would have been on this list :(

Platinum Games - Even their lower tier stuff (Korra, Anarchy Reigns) have pretty fun combat systems.

Any of Sakurai's games - Even though Brawl was a huge disappointment, at the very least, I know I'm getting a good chunk of content from his games

Rocksteady - An above average FPS followed by two of the best licensed games of all time are enough for me to give Rocksteady the benefit of the doubt on most things.

1) Nintendo, to be specific, they could release anything Kirby, Zelda, or Metroid and I'll always be there, especially Kirby

2) Naughty Dog: Always been a huge fan of their work, always buy their games without even thinking about it. Bought Last of Us remastered Day 1, still haven't really touched it, (that may be more due to me playing it last year anyway lol)

3) Platinum: became a fan of them recently, have been playing alot of their games and I just love the work and love that goes into these games, Bayo, Okami, Vanguish, Rising, all of it is top class.

3) Treasure: Please come back...
