Which games have better music: Mario, or Sonic?

Definitely Sonic. Mario games have always had fun and memorable music, but they've only really started rivaling Sonic quality in the recent games like Galaxy, 3D World, and Mario Kart 8.

Exactly how I feel. Sonic has had top tier music through even bad games. Mario just reached its peak in terms of OST consistency beginning honestly with Galaxy, though 64 probably has the highest highs

I have a feeling that a lot of the people saying Mario haven't played many if any 3D Sonic games (or at least listened to their soundtracks. Knowledge of any of the soundtracks of Sonic Adventure, Sonic 06, Unleashed, Colors, Lost World, and Generations are essential in making an informed desicion here.

As far as stage music it's probably closer but factoring in the themes and vocal songs then Sonic wins by a landslide

Edit: If you only want to factor in the last few years or so I'd give Mario the nod

All of Sonic's lyrical songs are garbage, I don't know what people see in them.
There's a cheese to them that fits the 3D Sonic games like a glove. They're goofy fun. How you can't crack even the slightest smile during Escape From the City is beyond me. Sooo good.

I have to give a slight edge to Sonic personally. I find that Sonic soundtracks are generally more ambitious whereas Mario often plays it more safe. But of course, both have amazing peaks.

And everyone saying "It isn't even close!" needs to sit the fuck down to be honest. They're both good. This isn't the 90's anymore; you're allowed to like both.

Mario's soundtracks are great...but I really enjoy the 3D Mario games mostly. The 2D games have catchy melodies but the ones that really impressed me were Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Galaxy 2 and 3D World. The rest of the Mario Platforming soundtracks are 'good' but don't come close to Sonic for me.

Mario Kart has great music tracks since Double Dash for me with it peaking with the amazing score of Mario Kart 8.

Even Mario's spin-offs have good music like the Power Tennis or the Strikers games.

But I honestly prefer Sonic more because I have a lot of the series soundtracks on my iPod, I don't for Mario, so....I guess I like Sonic's music more :).

As said before, Mario has higher highs (64, Galaxy & 3D World being the standouts), but Sonic has been far more consistent for far longer. (Adventure 1, Colors and especially Unleashed being standouts)

Of course, it helps that Sega has one of the best sound teams out there. Those guys have been going above and beyond for Sega soundtracks for over two decades.

Both are great overall, though.

3D World has the best Mario OST, tho

People's desire to compare these two series is always weird to me as they have little in common. I will say that the music in the Mario series is the most iconic music in gaming. From SMB1 to SM64 there is some great music in those games. From Sunshine onwards the only tracks I like are the remixes of the classic Mario tracks. Anything original in those games is just bland or uninspired.

On a whole, I think the music in Sonic games blows the music in Mario games out of the water. Even when you subtract the not great vocal tracks mostly featured in the Sonic Adventure era Sonic games I think the music in Sonic games are far more unique, varied and just plain catchy.

This thread shouldn't even have to be made - it's an easy victory for Sonic music.

Even Sonic 06, with its well known problems, delivered an amazing OST. I was going to post Solaris Phase 2 but I see that someone already beat me to it.

So, here are a couple more of my favourite Sonic 06 tracks:

White Acropolis (Snowy Peak)

Crisis City

Or I like sonic and mario music and its not even close

Sonic , heck sega in general has a history of just amazing music in video games. If you can call sega a master at anything in regards to sonic, its musical choice, their music is a step above and beyond mario's when put up to compare , strait up.

Sonic, easily.

Even in the last few years, the 3D Sonics compared to like the Galaxy games.

Don't get me wrong, Mario is excellent, but I just see Sonic as being one notch above.

The difference between something like Sonic 06 and Mario Galaxy soundtracks is that only the latter is attached to a game worthy of it.

Sonic has way more diversity in its music especially when you take into account of all the different composers (including Michael Jackson's crew and Yuzo Koshiro doing the Master System game) . But Mario still has a lot of strong and memorable tracks.

The Genesis Sonic games had pretty good music, but I haven't really liked what they've had from the Dreamcast era forward. The lyrical stuff especially is pretty cringey. You can get City Escape stuck in my head, but I won't be happy about it.

On the other hand, I don't really like the music in NSMB it 3D World either. But the Galaxy games have amazing soundtracks, as does SM64, and the classic games... Mario wins.

It's pretty crazy that I'd say Galaxy 2/Galaxy and Sonic Generations had the two best OSTs all last generation.

The Death Egg Remix in Sonic Generations is so good that it makes me feel what I'm guessing is a flooding of serotonin into my brain. It physically is one of the best feelings ever.

The escalation of the drums until the third part where the drummer just starts bashing the shit out of them is amazing, and even thinking about the song without listening to it, I could feel my brain getting that wonderful fuzzy feeling that is hard to describe...and it's not even the best track on a soundtrack that isn't even the best soundtrack of the generation.

The Big Arm remix from the 3DS version is also godlike

Sonic for sure. It totally destroys Mario in the music department. So much variety and style. Love it.

He needs to Feel the Sunshine.

Exactly, that way he'll Live and Learn that if you Open Your Heart, It Doesn't Matter.

Anyways, if he keeps up like that, he'll see What I'm Made Of, I Believe In Myself so I don't care, I Am...All Of Me.

I love how a lot of the responses are "_____, and it isn't even close," when it clearly seems to be a close call! That's opinions though...with that being said:

Sonic! And it isn't even close. I love the Mario Galaxy soundtrack like I love my unborn children. But Sonic games are legendary when it comes to music. Like the music is so good I feel the modern game quality has often suffered because of it. I swear when they were developing Sonic 06, they dedicated all the time into putting together that masterful soundtrack. They were probably at the end of the game's development timeline/cycle and someone probably said "hey guys don't we have to create a game to go with this music?"

I don't care if the shit technically isn't even out yet, I fuck with Studiopolis Zone

Bravo.

I salute you.
