Yea, I adored GTA4...at least the narrative aspect. The sandbox stuff deserved all the criticism, but those people have Crackdown and SR2 for that.

On its own strengths, GTA4 was phenomenal.
 
NSMB wasn't bad, just REALLY REALLY dissapointing. Kinda like Sunshine(actually no, Sunshine flat out sucked).

Jak 3 was garbage.

I had a lot of fun with this game. For me it would have to be Chrono Cross, one of my favorite rpgs ever.
 
Wii Music comes to mind right away. It was one of the best titles of 2008, but was derided constantly from E3 onward - even after its release proved it to be a much more enjoyable and meaty experience than the E3 demonstration led us to believe.

Also, Britney's Dance Beat. Not a Britney fan? Then pressing the buttons in time to her songs probably wouldn't be much fun...but if you dig the music and enjoy the videos being played in the background, it's a winner. The timing for the button patterns is on-point, and it can get pretty challenging. Also, the bonus unlockable content would be worth a playthrough for any Britney fan.

Yoshi's Story, too. I found it to be a much much more enjoyable game than SMW2 or Yoshi's Island DS. It was too short, but taking the core Yoshi gameplay and subtracting the shitty Baby mechanic from the other Yoshi titles was the right direction to take...and the game was a lot of fun, as a result.

Bubsy in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind

It was on of the "competition" games on an Australian kids' gameshow called Amazing! They'd play for about two minutes and try to rack up the highest score they could. That hyped me up for the game in no small way and when I finally saved up enough money to buy it, it quickly became my favourite game (I was still a Super Metroid virgin), awful controls be damned.

Cool Spot

Saw it on a shelf, thought it looked cool, so I bought it. Was a great game with interesting level design (though it did recycle some levels) and I wasn't even aware that it was all a big tie-in for Seven Up, since Cool Spot wasn't the Seven Up mascot in Australia.

Donkey Kong Country 3

Not as good as 2, but it was still pretty awesome. Found all the DK coins, unlocked all the bonus levels and got all the endings.

Metroid Fusion

Wasn't what I was expecting from a sequel to the greatest game ever made, but it was good in its own way. In terms of atmosphere, it just beat Super Metroid and is one of the few games that genuinely gave me the creeps. If only it weren't so linear :(

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance

You can sequence break by using the ice spell coupled with the fist subweapon. It breaks the game in two, but you can do some neat things as a result. The Super Metroid sequence breaker in me couldn't resist.

I don't know when or why it happened, but a while back it suddenly became fashionable to hate FF7. It may not have aged well, but I'll be damned if it wasn't the best experience a jrpgamer could have when it came out and for several years thereafter.

-Aidyn's Chronicles: The First Mage for N64----I can see the potential waiting for the hacking scene to catch up.

-Flying Dragon 64 ----best damn fighter I've ever played...countless hours on this game's "RPG" mode.

-ALL Mystery Dungeon and otherwise console/handheld Graphical Roguelikes, yes, even Fatal Labyrinth and Dragon Crystal games.

I tried to go in with an open mind when I first played it back in May 2007. I expected the greatest RPG experience of all time, thanks to the GAF hype. I don't remember any hate threads at the time, because all the game ever got was glowing praise.

Needless to say, I was sorely disappointed and have been voicing my dissatisfaction to GAF ever since.

Well, you played a pleasant surprise from 1997 in 2007 post-hype of "it's my favorite, it's so good, it set the standard, etc." It's not setting yourself up for failure but it's damn close.

I must be the only one that thinks it aged fine. Yeah, the boxy characters may look weird now, but the world map is still amazing and the battle system is solid in my opinion. I don't know why everyone hates the materia system so much.

I must be crazy, because even after all these years, it's still my favorite game of all time.

There has never been (at least as far as I know), an rpg that handles characters so well. The translation was butchered and the open world lead to a lot of confusion about where you were supposed to go next, but I loved the completely unconventional locations (giant casinos, spaceships, vampire castles) and characters (Wizards, Robots, Alcoholics, Superheros). It was so cool to play one character's story and see characters from other stories treat you differently.
 
Most of the games I like just coincidentally happen to be greatly loved and appreciated.

It's good to be on the winning team.

But the thing is... I played FFVI for the first time circa 2003 and I thought it was simply amazing. I don't care so much for graphics at all and with FFVII, I looked past them at a game that tried too hard to be cool.

Not only did I genuinely dislike the characters (especially Cloud), I was also confused at the disjointed story and the materia system, while showing potential, didn't really do it for me. So many things about this game fell flat for me, though I could see how it might appeal in the late 90s, it certainly isn't timeless.

I would definitely agree it isn't timeless, it's more loved for "remember when" and not timeless-ness. For me, there is certainly fun to be had with it and if you didn't enjoy it now at all then you probably wouldn't have back then. Sucks, but all games are not for everyone and you probably have an RPG that you love just as much as others love FF7, so it's all good. Stuck in the mystery of "why the fuck do people love that game so much...." and we're all there for certain games.
 
In FF-land, many that seem like vile: VII (the game itself is good, the spinoffs less so), VIII, X and X-2 (got some joy out of these), XII (heh)... that's most of the post-VI games, and heck, to some VI is the endall and beall, though I personally like V more than VI!

And like I always like to put out: the Shenmue series.
 
Well, if the barren servers are anything to go by, Multiwinia. What the fuck is wrong with people?!

Same goes for Iron Grip: Warlord.

In terms of non-online, a lot of my collection would get the thumbs-down from the hive-mind.

If the game was more polished, the cities felt more alive and some missions were easier, it'd be a classic of last generation. I loved this game.

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence

Great game, but it'd be much better if it had RPG elements, that was the biggest flaw of the game.

Amazing soundtrack, fun gameplay, and stylish atmosphere.
 
Hmmm, ok:

1. Star Ocean : Til The End of Time - looooved this game, yeah I agree cutscenes were dumb, story was ....weird (but I didn't think that plot twist was OMG horrible), but it was just a ton of fun the entire way through...for me.

2. Xenogears - long-winded to be sure, but I had a blast with this also. And it has one of my favorite soundtracks ever to boot.

3. Kameo - already mentioned a few times, but I really enjoyed the game and to this day think it's one of the prettiest games out there. and good god the soundtrack, where did THAT come from!

4. Final Fantasy XII - I can't believe I have to put this one a list like this. My favorite game on the PS2, I ADORED every second of it. I agree the story was ehhh toward the end but the gameplay (which is what a lot of ppl hate on) is pure gold to me. I wish every FF to come would have a similar system. *ducks/runs*

5. Folklore - Never understood the hate for this either. Beautiful, haunting, cool story, I had a lot of fun with it.

I'd play it right now but Microsoft decided that making this compatible wasn't worth their time...
 
Castlevania: Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, even though the graphics and background aren't that great I actually enjoyed these games a lot, music is excellent on both.

Megaman 4 I consider it to be just as good as 2 and 3, it has good bosses, music and levels.

Mario Kart: Double Dash I really liked the two player/item mechanic, never understood why people hated it. Having it as an option would've been nice.

MGS: The Twin Snakes I actually liked the new changes in the cinemas, I think that this one is probably better than the PSX original, but for some reason, I hated the briefing scenes with the 3d models instead of the 2d ones and wasn't a big fan of the new music.

Black Don't know how much people hate on this game, but I had lots of fun with it. Gun porn ftw

Tales of Legendia It's not the best RPG ever, but it is fun. Great music btw.

Oh, forgot some...

Shadow The Hedgehog: Godawful music, shitty storyline, and the lamest protagonist ever... but damn was that game fun.

Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest: It was good, okay?!

Phantasy Star Universe: Better than PSO, just not worth paying a monthly fee for.

NiGHTS Journey of Dreams: I actually don't know what the general consensus is for this game, but all I've heard from Sega fanboys is it's an "embarrassment compared to the original". I played this original and I think this installment makes it's predecessor look like shit. I absolutely love this game.
