Which genius game designer has stolen more of your life: Will Wright vs Sid Meier

Of everything these two ever made, I only played Sim City and Sim City 2000. Pirates! looked damn cool on the C64 magazines I owned though...

Pirates is awesome in every form. It's essentially the same game and sometimes they add shitty dance games, but it's still, at it's core, the same really really fun, time-less game.

Will Wright, definitely. SimCity, SimFarm, SimAnt, The Sims ... I played those a lot when I was a kid. Maybe I was too young to appreciate Sid Meier's games.

I've probably put similar amounts of time into each franchise (early iterations of the Sims) and Civ (between 3, IV, V, and a decent bit of Rev on iOS - really would like an updated Alpha Centauri to experience the greatness).

I have to give the nod to Sid though - I like Civ better even if it doesn't maintain my interest for long periods of time (beyond an initial game or two per installation of the series - and that's at least something like 10-15 hours.) It's a game I can always go back to and enjoy for hours at a time.

I'm dying of nostalgia here.

Both SimCity 2000 and Civilization started me up as a PC gamer, but I can sadly admit that The Sims puts Wright over the top.

In terms of quality, it's a wash.

Will Wright, though it is still a close battle.

SimCity 2000 consumed me like no other game in my adolescence. SimCopter rocked. And anyone who would deny the impact and addictive appeal of The Sims is insane, especially when it was superseded by its own sequel.

I am probably the only person on the planet who does not appreciate the Civilization franchise as much as others, but I really loved Railroad Tycoon back in the day and enjoyed Alpha Centurai immensely. I apologize Sid Meier!

Sim City 4 + the hardcore urban planning mods = 200+ hours spent building and designing cities and regions. I've probably played Sim City 3000 and 2000 for 100 - 200 hours each as well. So... on that basis, Will Wright. I haven't given any of Sid Meier's games an honest chance, but hopefully that will change some day!

Easily Sid Meier. Sure, I've put countless hours into Sim Ant, Sim Farm, and all of the iterations of Sim City, but I've always been addicted to Sid Meier's games, especially Colonization. I'm not even sure why, but the DOS version of Colonization will probably never leave my hard drive. An underrated game in my opinion.

Civ Revolutions on the DS was fantastic by the way, great way to kill some time and even fun to play multiplayer.

Sid Meier for sure.

I spent so many hours on Civ 1 and Railroad Tycoon growing up that it isn't even funny. Simcity, SimEarth, and SimAnt all got a lot of playing time as well, but Civ and RR Tycoon were probably the 2 top games ever for me in terms of how many hours I spent playing them! In the 2000s I did spend a lot of time playing Simcity 4 but I probably yet again spent even more time playing Civ 4 and 5.

It is what it is. For the topic, I suppose Meier.

I liked Civ back in the day, but Kojima's titles have stolen more of my time than any other developer. Seems strange to only limit the topic to two developers.

C'mon man the number of topics limited to Japanese games/devs/composers/VA's etc etc etc on gaf dwarfs the shit out of these kind of topics.

Will Wright, easily 80% of my PC time growing up was consumed by his games.

I could never get into Civ at all. But I'll give Sid credit, Pirates Gold was awesome. My mom even got rid of it because one of the game over scenes gave me nightmares, haha.

Will Wright, easily.

Indirectly through countless hours of Sim City on SNES.

Directly with not quite as many hours of Sim City 2000 on PC.

Also a bit of boiling off the oceans and making whale civilizations using Monoliths in Sim Earth.

And some time with Sim Ant wishing I could change some things to make an amazing game.

Never got into the turn based Sid Meier stuff.

Sid would win this even if he only made Civ 2. Because me and my buddy played that game for like a decade. Seriously. We were running Classic on our Macs until the very end, just to play that game.

All-out nuclear warfare was soooooo fun.

From those 2, Sid Meier pretty easily.

If you can count the "Sim-" line of games in the conversation, then Yoot Saito wins. I have played more Sim Tower than pretty much any non MMO.

Will for me but only because I used to thrash the shit out of Raid on Bungling Bay back on the C64. Don't think I've played a Sid game.

Sid Meier for Civ IV alone and Ive played all the Sim City's even the handheld versions, that's how much time I've played Civ IV. I think it's very close to perfect just could use an updated diplomacy system, it did not need to be gutted a la Civ V

This game, this fucking game...

Where can I get this from? It's not on Origin.

Even though I played a shitload of SimCity/2000 back in the day Sid easily wins this. Civilization and Railroads! have eaten up way more of my life than I really want to think about.

Civ2, Pirates, Alpha Centauri, and Railroad series vs SimGolf, Sim City, and the Sims. If not for Civ2, it probably would be a lot closer.

Definitely Will Wright. Sunk wayyy too many hours into Sim games (City and Tower especially) in my young days.

Sid. Will Wright mostly makes games for women, IMO.
I haven't played much of The Sims - but I assume that's what you're getting at - but from what I read, watched and have been told the Sims games (at least the first one or the ones WW were part of) are fairly complicated simulations and such. They aren't all just dress-up doll house games just because women enjoy playing it as much as men do.

It's real close for me, but counting all the hours and late nights playing hot seat and multiplayer games with my brother and my cousin and their friends in all of the Civs, Sid has to win. Civ 2 was my first foray and I still remember the dinosaurs and the martian aliens. Those were fun.

Will Wright -- Sims, Sim City, Sim Tower, Sim Ants, Spore.

I've just never gotten in to Side Meier games.

SimTower was Yoot Saito.

I think I spent more hours with it than all the Civilization games combined, or all other Maxis games combined...and I haven't played it in close to a decade. Probably something like 1500 hours between 1994 and 2002.

It bothers me though how people think The Sims are shallow. They're actually getting progressively deeper and actually quite complex despite their casual audience.
