Which has the best shooting feel (gunplay): Titanfall 2 or F.E.A.R.?

FEAR was a ridiculous ballet of bullets and chunks of walls coming off, sparks from bullets grazing the enemies helmets, clouds of dusts from office tables being ripped apart and shockwaves rippling the air from frag granades.

There has never been a shooter like that, ever again.

And this is what makes me sad. Because nobody to this day has been able to recreate what Monolith did from nearly 13 years ago. Ditto with Doom. Nobody has been able to recreate what id did from nearly 15 years ago!

I liked what I played of TF2 but the gunplay wasn't really a standout aspect of the game.

The gunplay in FEAR is just brutal as fuck. It's unmatched.

Titanfall 2 was all about the movement, but the gunplay was pretty awesome.

FEAR really felt realistic with the way the weapons sounded and were animated. I don't remember them being that fun and fluid to shoot though.

The real king is Max Payne 3. Though third person, it's still the most satisfying and fun shooter I've ever played. Hope R* San Diego has been studying this for RDR2.

Worst: Uncharted series. Even with 4 and LL the gunplay is slow, weightless, and feels inaccurate.

Judging from the posts in this thread I should probably play F.E.A.R.

I mean, its one of the landmark games in gaming. How did you missed it so long? If you cant play it on a computer, dont play it at all, wait until you can do it on pc. The console versions have wathered down the stuff people are praising in this topic ( guns have no recoil and feel like theyre shooting nails, enemies do lower damage and miss more, so the fights feel mellow and so on)

Indeed. Although I feel compelled to mention it's only the second best FPS from Monolith, behind No One Lives Forever 2. And that's a game a lot of people probably have not played yet.

FEAR. It's not even close, the actual shooting part of Titanfall is whatever, hardly impressive, or loud, or crunchy, or satisfying from a skill ceiling standpoint. It's the movement in that game that is killer, but FEAR's shooting n combat are ace as fuck.

i mean there's nothing else to be said to be honest.

:bow FIRST ENCOUNTER ASSAULT RECON :bow

Titanfall 2 has better jumping though.

okay, so, i have not played T2, so i cant really pick one or the other, but for everyones consideration here is a gif from me playing FEAR just yesterday

its probably FEAR

FEAR and Max Payne 3 are both heavily inspired by John Woo which is why they nail this type of chaotic action better than anyone else. In addition to the gunplay itself feeling satisfying, you have all these different environmental effects which further adds to the chaos and they also have really satisfying hit detection. Like your bullets in MP3 leave holes in the guys you shoot. On top of all this you even have bullet time so you can see the chaos unfold in slow motion.

This is what sets them apart from other shooters like Halo and Destiny which kind of feel static by comparison.

I wish I had something to play FEAR on because this thread is making me want to give it a try. Titanfall 2 feels sublime to me though.

Haven't played FEAR, but I didn't find Titanfall 2's gunplay very engaging at all. Part of the reason I dropped it.

As someone who loves MP3, I honestly feel Metal Gear Solid V surpasses it as a TPS from a mechanical perspective.

MGSV is a little too stiff for my liking. You can't shoot while using the most of your mobility like you can in Max Payne 3. Not big on the square crosshairs either, though I guess that's more of a separate issue from the gunplay itself.

I do wonder why nobody has even tried to recapture the combat aesthetics of FEAR considering the "legendary" status it seems to have gained over the years. It's not like how they did it is some closely guarded secret: all you have to do is go nuts with screen filling particle effects. There are other details like the 3d decals that make it look like the walls are being destroyed, which are nice, but the giant plumes of blood and cement dust seriously account for like 90% of the perceived effect. I wouldn't mind seeing them in other games.

I think Fear's rag doll is also better which ultimately makes the experiencing of shooting stuff. That is, blasting people off their feet in Fear is a lot more satisfying.

Although, Ion's Shoulder Laser pre-nerf may be one of my favourite things in a shooting game.

Titanfall is about the movement, not the gunplay. I think Destiny gunplay feels better than Titanfall and thatÂ’s at half the frame rate. FEAR beats them both out in purge play though.

This, while totally valid, only applied to the PC version if I recall correctly. Weren't the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions incredibly pared back?

The guns in TF2 feel good, but it's not quite on the chunky level of something like FEAR or BLACK or Killzone 2.

Sound design and animation go a long way in selling gunplay.

The focus of TF2 is speed and that takes away some of the heft.

The weight of a shotgun blast in KZ2/FEAR felt like you were blowing a hole through a ragdoll, especially in slow motion.

And the hammerdrill feel of the automatics felt you were manning an AA gun against a squad of baddies.

Just check out the Ballet of Death trailer for KZ2.

Man I wish those games got proper sequels.

Never played Titanfall 2, but I did play FEAR and loved the way the guns felt.

For me it's hard to beat any of Tripwire Interactive's games when it comes to shooting. Rising Storm 2: Vietnam has absolutely incredible shotguns. Killing Floor 2 feels great as well.

I remember playing the first hour or so of FEAR a couple of years ago, finding is unremarkable and shelving it. With so much praise in this thread, I really should unshelve and replay.

Titanfall's big thing is it's dynamic movement but its gunplay is Call of Duty style hitscan. FEAR's shooting is top tier. Uses a projectile based system like in the Max Payne games with heavy recoil and feedback, and the AI feels like it's actually aiming at you. So if you use good movement you can dodge damage even without using bullet time. Like Max Payne, this creates a "duel" type of feel versus your AI opponents.

Well said.
