Which perceived problems in gaming are you part of?

Dark Souls wasn't a bad port though (expect for GFWL which was later removed)

It totally was a bad port. It had crazy graphical limitations, overall poor performance, poor online mode and broken keyboard/mouse controls. And GFWL.

I guess it was fairly stable but if that's a pretty low bar to set to call something a "good" port — i.e. "it's not completely broken, yay!".

I'm a white straight male who doesn't mind being pandered to.

Aside from that, I frequently buy games that are surrounded by shitty business practices and then complain about them afterward. GFWL may have been absolute garbage, but it didn't stop me from buying multiple afflicted games. Even if I can patch it out, I'm still going to bitch about it.

Let me break down my views on this down.
.

Id totally agree with you here. However I think most of these are ok on thier own, but it is when you get them bunched together it becomes a problem, and so there is a percieved problem on each thing.

As an example if you purchase GameX on preorder, you play it and its buggy with bad quality gameplay/graphices/sound etc, then the game is clearly not what has been advertised, has missing features that were promised plus the expectation of the publisher to sell the customer more DLC based on this next to microtransactions and on top of this there is no communication on the purchase, anyone would be upset. So individually I dont think these are issues. Together they are and creat a preceived problem with each.

I think it "Seems" that alot of games have followed a trend pre-order+shoddy release and this has had a massive impact on the perception of new trends in gaming.

(The other stuff Otto/Gamergate/Konami should be left to the journalists reporting on them and the rest of the internet cos I have no idea)

Preorder culture. I preorder all the time when I can. I like physical bonuses but I despise all in-game content locked to preorders. That said, I really only buy games I am pretty certain I will enjoy. I'm not held hostage to them and never feel like I'm tricked in any way because of them.

DLC. I do support it in games I really like even though I am aware I'm encouraging them to screw me over worse in the future.

Digital Future. This one is not my fault, as I would otherwise have to import games in my native tongue, but i still hate the way the industry treats digital and I have a sinking feeling they will get worse. I have serious fears of arbitrarily having licenses I paid for stripped, likely all at once, by Sony someday.

framerate cap shaming according to GAF.

I guess I play F2P games occasionally and sometimes spend money on them. Like if I put 400+ hours into Marvel Heroes I think it's okay to drop the price of a retail game on it.

Some of these I don't know how I'm part of the problem when its completely out of my controll. Buggy or broken releases? If I know ahead of time, I won't buy them depending on the severity of the issue.

Other than that, I do preorder games fairly often, I will get some DLC, depending on the content and price. I enjoy sexy female characters. I guess those are the main ones.

I buy a shitload of remasters. Like, over half of my PS4 games are remasters.
I will sometimes buy dlc costumes for single player games.
I preorder every once in a while for digital extras.
I still buy Assassin's Creed games, though I did skip Unity because I don't have a lot of money right now.
I don't think Randy Pitchford is a bad guy and I will continue to support Gearbox because I love Borderlands.

True. Amazon lets you cancel your pre-order as long as the product hasn't been dispatched i.e. ~ 12 hours before release. The most important thing is when the review embargo breaks and whether all the different ports are available to reviewers during the review process. That way you can have some information on the quality of the product and have peace of mind pre-ordering. You know a game is gonna be good if the embargo breaks weeks before release like MGSV.

And even then you can return the product once it has shipped if it's unopen.

As for myself, I don't see the perceived problems with Pre-ordering, DLC, Remasters, nor do I avoid mobile games like the plague. I also don't care if the game is locked at 30FPS.

Amiibo_Group.jpg

I have too big of a collection of these things. I'm fully aware that I'm being taken for a ride, too.

Game hoarding and pre-orders.

I used to play a whole lot more, now I limit myself to two or three games at once (over the course of 2-3 months). But I still purchase other games too. These usually linger in factory shrink wrap for many months.

Apparently I'm a saint by these metrics.

I guess I'm a cheap bastard devaluing the medium by mostly purchasing games during sales. I buy maybe 1-2 full price new releases per year tops.

Probably that I buy games with terrible depictions of non-male characters.
Also, the 'buy on digital, never play' has started to creep up on me. I'm working through a pretty big backlog before I make any new game purchases.

I pre-order because I don't give a shit and sometimes the only way to get the specific niche games physically is to pre-order. So it's either pre-order or don't get it.

I also really enjoy fanservice in games and anime.

Oh yeah, this applies for me as well. I will wait years for a game to drop to a price I'm willing to pay for it.

* I pre-order the hell out of stuff that I want - I'm buying it anyway, might as well get free swag for my trouble. I never PO stuff BECAUSE of the swag, though, that's just senseless.

* I'm a big fan of remasters, as long as the game is actually old enough to inspire nostalgia (Ratchet and Clank Trilogy, DMC4) or there's a good reason to go back to the well (Uncharted). I don't care if it's "lazy" and "a cash grab", the only thing that matters to me is whether I want to play it or not.

* I buy anime-ish games (Atlus/NIS/XSEED stuff) that some people consider to be mindless filth. A lot of these games are actually quite good if you give them a chance (can't say the examples I'm thinking of, as IIRC they're banned on GAF)... I'm a grown man with a fully functioning social life, and can choose to simply ignore the T&A if it's gratuitous in nature.

* I support Konami as far as they make games I want to buy, which at this point appears to have been whittled down to MGS... Silent Hill appears to be on the outs at this point, and the Suikoden name seems to be kept alive by little more than blind optimism nowadays.

Edit: Also, I'm a Steam sale whore. 9 times out of 10 will not buy PC game if not on sale.

None that I can think of. I tend to avoid day one purchases and let patches get released. There are exceptions like E3 30% off promo's.

It really doesn't bother me if a game has a dodgy frame rate, as long as it's not egregiously awful (regularly <20fps). A frame rate cap wouldn't bother me if I was playing on a PC. Better that it wasn't there, sure, but I don't care enough to make it a deal-breaker.

Even though things like the portrayal of women in games bother me, I'll still buy a game with issues in that department if it plays well.

I've made various microtransactions in mobile games in the past and plan to do so in the future.

I can see myself buying virtual currency for $60 console games.

Uhh... let me think... I've bought games filled to the brim with fanservice despite being vocally against overt pandering to adolescent white males.

Hmm... I still pre-order some games, but only if they come with a $10 reward certificate.

I bought an Amiibo.

Guess im the biggest offender.

Gladly supporting Kojima-and Konami (one last time at least)
-may be buying a FOB or 2 as well-if I find out it dramatically helps the grind

Day one Season pass owner

preorder everything

mostly digital

buy most remakes/remasters

will buy multiple games every month- only play one or 2 of them for a few hours-rarely play any game to completion

I've never understood people who pre-order and then complain about broken games. I've completely avoided so many problems by waiting. I get my games patched and at a fraction of the cost when the game just came out. I've avoided some very poor purchases by waiting for player impressions. People claim they save money with pre-ordering, but I claim I save much more by never doing it.

- Sometimes I pre-order games
- I play WoW (thus, supporting a subscription-based game)
- Hate the attitudes of some companies but buy their games
-
I'm turning into a filthy casual (limited free time - adulthood)

Not sure you can play any mainstream games without ticking some of those boxes or pirating, which is one of the problems the OP doesn't list.

Destiny

I've put hundreds of hours in the Xbone and PS4 versions. It's pretty much what I play exclusively, to the point that I'm wondering how much time I'll actually put into MGSV.

Actual problems I support with my money? Can't think of any. The closest I can get is that I've bought some violent games, some with torture scenes. That does sometimes make me uncomfortable.

Perceived problems I support with my money? Well...
-I buy and enjoy games with scantily clad sexy women. Doesn't exactly influence my purchases but it is something I enjoy. Fortunately not an actual problem.
-I buy and enjoy games with 30fps framerates or those that dip below, including 'bad ports'. Again, if it's a framerate issue only, I won't notice and therefore I don't feel like it's an actual problem. I don't ever notice until Neogaf tells me. (Bugs, glitches, poor netcode and/or poor resolution are another story.)

I never once saw Capcom as going down hill. They've been consistently great for me, though, to be fair, I have yet to play RE6.

I nearly, nearly supported WB Interactive DLC practices by almost purchasing the Arkahm Knight Season Pass. I was going to be the 3rd DLC I ever purchased (BF:BC2 Vietnam and Liar of the Shadow Broker being the other ones).

Luckily a sudden rush of rationality told me "I didn't need the DLC for Arkham City, I won't need it for this one"...

But yeah, I'm part of the problem.

Also I support expensive US digital games (same price as physical) since they are cheaper for me. And I've preordered two games in my whole life, both came out amidst a publisher silence which was hidding something (Dark Souls 2 - Downgrade // Metal Gear Solid V - Microtransactions galore)

So yeah, I'm part of those problems as well.

Poor online mode was because of GFWLs wackiness. Graphical limitations sure, but it didn't have "poor performance" at all, making it by far the best vanilla version out there. I can't comment on broken keyboard / mouse controls as I never played it with those but so I have heard. At least the controller support was good \_(ツ)_/¯

On topic: I do the pre-order thing because I have some loose income and I want to send it when I want to, not when I need to. I have been bitten few times in the past (like with Batman), but those are just drops in the sea.

I buy DLC quite often because I'm sheeple. Mostly only the DLC that ties up loose story ends and nothing like costumes or alternate characters for single player games. But still.

I more often than not buy FIFA every year

I buy dlc for games I enjoy (I don't feel this is a problem but I absolutely understand why some do)

I will buy most Bethesda open world rpgs day one regardless of bugs

I certainly used to buy a lot of preowned games but do much less now that I have a gaming PC

However,I don't feel these are inherent problems. just the way in which some developers and publishers abuse them. Although yearly FIFA purchases are almost indefensible

Pre-Orders: Given that I live nearly an hour out from Best Buy (dat GCU discount) and most other game-carrying retailers, I've taken to pre-ordering from Amazon. It's a matter of convenience, and in most cases whatever game I pre-order is one that I was going to buy regardless of reviews or opinions.

Purchasable DLC: It's extra content that gives me an excuse to go back to a game or continue on longer. If I don't feel the price is right in what content is offered, I can forgo the purchase and still have the complete game.

There is this belief that is rampant that all or nearly all DLC is held back content and should always be free, extending to some 'expansions', that just isn't true in most cases. That doesn't mean DLC isn't planned out before a game releases...that's just sensible business. However, that doesn't necessarily equate to content being cut and put into DLC to make some crooked bucks off of a Day 1 or future release.

Mobile Gaming: With lack of [affordable] public transportation and living a bit into the sticks, driving everywhere makes it difficult to put in time on a handheld console outside of the house (Vita or 3DS). But since I do have a smartphone on me at most times, I can put in time on there. Plague Inc and The Room 1&2 are my only purchases with the rest being free/f2p, but I've enjoyed them and found those costs to be forgettable in comparison to some AAA games I've bought in the past.

Sub 60 FPS or Why can't these developers do 4K/60fps with every game: Having a gaming rig back in my life has been amazing (minus Arkham Knight going the way of Patchface). Yet, playing titles at 1080p with 30 fps cap hasn't been much of an issue. As long as the game isn't chugging or interfering markedly with the gameplay, unlocked 30fps and even sub-1080p is ok if it's my only or preferred (player base, tradition) option.

Remasters: Unless there's some proof to the contrary, I've seen no indication that any of these and most other remaster/rerelease projects are interfering with the development of some fantastic new IP they are holding back on, from either a funding or time allocation standpoint. To me, it's [usually] better versions of titles we've enjoyed and now available to new audiences.

Amiibo: While this probably won't continue after buying for the first time from that last major wave, I did partake in what I generally feel is one of the most ridiculous forms of DLC that can be, not to mention the whole mismanagement in product distribution.

None of the ones in the OP, though I went from an opposer to an advocate of EA Access, the value proposition is just too good, and until that changes I will continue to shout about it. The second they fall off, I become their worst enemy.

Tons of DLC - I bought a lot of the Crusader Kings DLC which includes asthetic things, music, and new unit models. I thought it was decent stuff, but still very overpriced.

Pre-Order culture - I am always tempted by pre-order discounts for indie games. Not so much now as I used to be. I still joined in and helped the problem.

Missing features - I get sucked into games with missing features under the same promises or beliefs as many others - it will be patched in, later. I try to buy unfinished games, later, now. But, they still continue being made. I bought NHL '15.

Buggy games - I used to say: it will be patched, don't worry. Many games still remain buggy and unplayable to my fail.

Things I won't go near - Microtransactions. This is a plague and is destroying what is good about the expansion and DLC culture as it attracts more developers and producers. Gone are the days of cheat codes and worthy unlockables.
