Which perceived problems in gaming are you part of?

Thankfully very few

I mobile game but I put a hard cap on what I'll spend on it, and I hardly ever even reach that
I've bought DLC but it's very far and few between

Things I don't do

Pre-Order, it's basically a sham now, no way to get all "content" unless you pre-order 10 copies of the same game, it's shameful.

Microtransactions for full priced games, sure f2p it's how they make money but don't charge me after you already made me pay $60, fuck you.

Port quality on PC doesn't seem to bother me very much just as so long I can finish the game. I've been gaming on PCs nearly exclusively for 20 years and the number and quality of ports these days are pretty great.

DLC - No issues with DLC and I quite enjoy the idea of single-player, story based DLC. I've also bought cosmetic stuff if it was badass enough.

Preorder - If I know I'm buying a game when it comes out, then I might as well preorder and get an additional digital item or two.

Pre-orders I guess. I still have my limits. I will not pre-order more than 3 months in advance, unless there is a sweet CE that I want. And I will never pre-order if the extras are stupid DLC stuff that are limited to a certain vendor.

I still think preordering is cool if you want a game, but doing it out of the 3 month window is what's wrong.

I preorder certain games, if I was going to get it Day One anyway and preordering gets me a free bonus.

If I'm playing a F2P game and I like it enough to put a good amount of time into it, I'll spend some money on microtransactions.

I buy amiibos, because my four-year-old loves them and because a lot of those characters would never receive any kind of physical merchandise otherwise, at least in America, and it's really cool to have Toon Link, Shulk, and Mega Man on my desk.

I've never paid for a season pass and have never wished I had: every game I've liked (or even thought I would like ahead of time) has included content that I wouldn't buy separately in their season pass, such as multiplayer or challenge rooms.

I still buy Nintendo products despite NoA treating us like 3rd class fans.

I bought both Mortal Kombat X and Batman: Arkham Knight Limited Editions, despite knowing they were locking off content and having retailer-exclusive DLC.

In my defense, the Arkham Knight edition I got for a good price after a Walmart price glitch, and Mortal Kombat X's "Season Pass" was refunded to me after I complained that it wasn't actually a Season Pass.

I'm one of those people who bitch that Japanese games like Yakuza don't get proper Western releases, but then when they do I don't buy them (I'd buy 5, but I'm too lazy to plug my ps3 back in).

I don't think all of those are a problem?

And if you don't like something well, don't play it. And if you do clearly it wasn't that big of a problem to begin with.

Which perceived problems in gaming are you supporting with your money despite knowing better?

My biggest sins are:
1) Paying for online multiplayer with PSN+ and Gold subscriptions (mostly play on PC)
2) Preorders and season passes
3) Buying console(s) on day 1

And I don't perceive remakes/remasters as problem.

Cussing into the mic i guess?

Lol thankfully i only play with adults and friends that are cool with it or do the same thing

Been trying to curtail my language though.

I can tend to be a bit elitist and look down on certain types of games as belonging to peasant level people. I shouldn't do it and I mentally realize that it takes all types but that is my instant reaction to some things.

I preorder if i'm getting a game day 1 anyways

def dont buy Microtransactions, I have never spent a dime on those including phone games, and I very rarely buy DLCs.

Preordering from Amazon during E3 is the best thing I've ever done being a Canadian.

Seriously, it's 30% off and you can cancel at any time. All you have to do is preorder games you know for sure you'll be getting.

I got Gears UE, Halo 5, Fallout 4, Zelda U, and Dark Souls 3 preordered. The chances that these games will be bad is pretty low for me

Save for 2 instances I haven't bought a game for more than $10 in the last decade. And well over 80% of my purchase are under $5. I don't know if that's a 'perceived problem' but I sometimes feel like I'm not supporting devs as much as I should. But sorry, devs, I'm cheap.

I pre order a lot of games.

But i don't really see the issue with it since they aren't getting my money till the day it comes anyway.

I like pre-ordering, helps me organize and prepare, as well as guarantee a copy on release. I'm pretty picky so I tend to pre-order what I really want.

You mean things perceived as problems by me or by other people? If it's the former, I've pre-ordered digital games a couple of days in advance for the sake of pre-order bonuses and preloading instead of waiting to see if they're broken or not. If it's the latter, I don't actually give a shit.

I like Dark Souls 2.

This is not a problem at all.

Regarding other perceived problems:

Do I pre-order games? Sometimes, recently I did preorder DSII and Bloodborne, but also Rodea the Sky Soldier and Dark Souls II Design Works. I'll pre-order Persona 5 and Dark Souls III (and I'd probably get the collectors edition for both games).

Do I buy DLC? Yes, for games I play a lot. Recently I bought the Lost Crowns Trilogy for DSII, both on xb360 and ps3; I also bought DSII Scholar of the First Sin for XB1. I'll get Bloodborne DLC when it's available. I'd buy map packs for the few multiplayer games I play too.

Do I support Gamergate? You want to bait some people into getting banned?

Do I support Konami? They'd have to release games that are interesting to me first.

Microtransactions? I've played some free to play games for a time but I don't usually buy anything there.

Mobile gaming? Don't play on my mobile.

Do I play games were the main character is a 30 something year old white dude? I don't play most AAA games, so no. I always make male characters when given the option, though.

Don't really think I'm part of one.

But maybe gamergate in some small way? Not sure what would constitute as I haven't really been reading a lot about it.

But I do think that the discussion about sexualization of male or female characters tends to be somewhat too biased in favour of the views of people who are quick to call out when a female character is perceived as sexualized ( and I'm not denying that this is a very common thing).

By that I mean that I mean that I feel like some people look at and analyze female characters so much harder than males, looking for what could be considered fanservice. And in cases like Bayonetta and R. Mika, where there certainly is some eye candy, that fact tends to trump any other aspects of those characters.

And meanwhile you have male characters, which are basically always deemed to be nothing but male power fantasies.

I actually find the current Ryu thread interesting in this regard. Because I see so many people who seemingly don't understand what the deal is, and I wonder how many of them are people who will debate how a female showing something like cleavage is just there to act as eye candy for a male player, meanwhile brushing off males characters as pretty much stricly power fantasies for male players.

I'm part of the problem in that I just don't care that much about the problems. Everything I do gaming related is for fun. I just can't take it as seriously as others.

There are things that bug me, sure. When that is the case I just move on to something else (meaning I don't put my money into it) and don't worry about it. I will voice my opinion at times but, that is mostly because I get bored during the day. I actually think a lot of gamers would be better off if they smoked more pot. Just chill man.

But I do think that the discussion about sexualization of male or female characters tends to be somewhat too biased in favour of the views of people who are quick to call out when a female character is perceived as sexualized ( and I'm not denying that this is a very common thing).

That, in general, is how things regarding problems work; not even gamergate specific. When there is a problem it's usually sensationalized as a way to garner attention and any counter data is construed as an intentional attempt to attack those pointing out the problem. It's obviously exasperated by idiocy but, I find that idiocy to be on both sides usually. Again, that is not just specific to gamergate. It seems to be with all problems in society.

I haven't bought a game upon release in quite some time. Rather, I entertain myself w/ my backlog and wait for prices to drop on Amazon.

A ton. I preorder games, I buy DLC, season passes, and microtransactions. I only buy cosmetic ones or guns in TLoU, I don't like shortcut ones. If I can earn it in game I will. There's not really a controversy here. I buy stuff I want with my money, other people don't buy it. Pre-ordering costs me nothing upfront from Amazon and I don't know, I am having a blast playing tons of games so who cares.

Edit: Apart from the business side I might be more of a competitive player which some would call 'toxic' if they are on the opposite team and 'teamwork' if they are on my side.

GamerGate for me. I never supported it but I was pretty apathetic to it. After reading about all of the vile harassment people like Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian continue to suffer to this day, I've taken much more notice. As an avid gamer for over 25 years, I've never been as disgusted with gamer culture and the gaming industry in general as I felt after reading the entire saga.

Gamers losing their collective minds over one woman's sex life and another woman's opinions is bad enough. What really bothers me and continues to bother me is the gaming industry as a whole has done absolutely nothing to denounce these attacks. I know everything is about the almighty dollar but fuck, how much money does it cost you to denounce this kind of hatred?

I also spent a lot of time playing old consoles instead of the new ones, and I hold back buying a new system until the very end. I know people who clamor for the new hardware would probably lament all of the sales caused by cross-gen gaming but I'll support those old-hardware ports as long as I can.

I also buy walking simulators and love a lot of them.

I preorder here and there, mostly for games that could use the numbers to gauge interest, like Yakuza 5 and Digimon: Cyber Slueth for recent examples.

I don't buy DLC that I find exorbitant, aside from the MK X DLC but I got a deal at target where it only cost me $10.

I don't perceive the sexualization of either male or female characters as a problem.
Sexy designs do not equal weak or surpressed to me. If anything, I feel like perceiving it as a problem is like surpressing my own sexuality. We're humans, we love looking at sexy, beautiful bodies.
That said, it's not something I actively promote or seek out. I'm sure at least 90% of my gaming library doesn't even have any sexy characters. I just don't see it as an issue.

I'm a preorder whore, probably spent over $1500 this year and buying just about every AAA western action game including many collectors editions.

Sorta bad on DLCs, I've preordered stuff like Forza 6 Ultimate, Destiny Digital Guardians (+ Taken King), etc but have limited it in the past year to titles I know I will play the shit out of.

I absolutely love ultra violence and sexism in games and make no apologies. I'm a big guy IRL and have never hit another person (always afraid of hurting someone even when I walk around) so playing violent games is very fun for me. Stuff like GTA or Saints Row or God of War are my jam, I love the style of humor, the parodying of American culture, and the cynical attitudes in those games.
