Yeah, these are the answers.

Powerbombs are dangerous enough, and the Ganso bomb is basically a botched version that gives the opponent nothing to brace against.

The Vertebreaker combines the worst parts of the double underhook piledriver (arms are hooked) and the Ganso bomb (nothing to brace against). Plus there's the added bonus of the attacker not being able to see that everything looks right before continuing. If the person performing the move screws up, there's nothing you can do.

Mysterio was also getting some fan-based heat for a while in WCW, and this was kind of their backhanded way of leveraging it and burying him at the same time. "Elevating him" by having him feud with Nash/Hall and squashing him too. He did pin Nash once though (and got wrecked in the rematch if I recall).
