Trump cares more about his image with regards to the wall promise than he does about the country. It's too bad that the GOP didn't just tell him to pound sand with the wall idea. It's clearly going to be an ineffective money pit, and if officials weren't salivating over where those construction contracts were going to land, they would admit as much.

This wall, if it ever does get built at massive expense to the taxpayer, is getting torn down after the next election. It might be the single biggest waste of money and resources in human history.

unlike obamacare, which has obvious advantages and repealing it obvious disadvantages, the only thing going against the wall is...the colossal waste of money. this means that Trump has incentives to let the Obamacare repeal fade away, but keep pounding on the stupid wall issue
The worst part is that once that money is in, it's never coming out. Trying to cut anything from the defense budget is instant political ammunition.

I still don't know how the US plans its overall budget. Does Trumps wish only affects the discretionary spending?
The director of the NIH spoke at my university last fall. He showed us a graph of the NIH's funding and the general trend was downward except for a slight bump upwards that had taken place in the last year. He then said he was hopeful that this was indicative of a trend of increased funding for the NIH. I feel bad for that man right now, and research in general.
Note on that 6 million annual, Trump costs that amount in just two weekends of his vacation golfing at his own hotel, paying himself the taxpayer money. He has so far taken five of these trips in seven weeks of being in office.
Why treat and save kids from cancer/other terminal illnesses when you can use that cash to deport and bar the re-entry of dangerous Mexicans who were caught jaywalking one time 10 years ago?
So Trump spends more money in two weekends' worth of golf trips than this place gets for cancer research in a year.

The only way any of Trump's plans could conceivably pass is by forcing a simple majority vote as part of the budget process, which is currently ongoing. In order to do that, US law requires that these bills be at least deficit neutral, which means that for every idiotic idea he wants to ramrod through, he needs an equal amount of cuts. After the budget process, Democrats will have an easier time blocking him.
That's why he started by trying to gut Obamacare, it would have given him money to play around with, but that failed. And Republicans still want "tax reform" (cuts), so really he's just fucked.

You know, if Trump wanted to just built some massive, ostentatious monument for no reason other than to pad his own ego, I could almost get behind that. It would probably be the most acceptable idea he's ever had.
The problem is he wants to build a monument to racism, isolationism, and stupidity, and he wants to pay for it in the worst ways he can think of.
