White people, do you consider "redneck" or cracker racist?

I ask this because myself and a white friend went to a local store and she was browsing the books and then handed me one she wanted to get since I was in line. Well this guy behind me got a bit irritated and told me I cant let people cut in line. I calmly explained the girl is with me and left it alone. Well he mumbled something to the effect of "always with the fuckin crackers.." she winced but didnt say anything. I got annoyed and told him point blank dont bring that racist shit here. He then went on to call her a cracker again and a redneck. By then other folks got involved and he ended up being asked to leave.

Once in the car she told me I made too big a deal out of it. She been my friend for years, no way id let someone insult her like that. I asked her dont you consider that shit racist, she said not really, just hateful words.

So white gaf, do you consider those words racist?
 
No because I have never been called a racial slur and have never been discriminated against in any meaningful way for being white.

I can see how being called those words can be nasty and unpleasant because any confrontation is unpleasant but racist? Again, no.

I don't think redneck is racist, it's just stupid and reminds me of Jeff Foxworthy.

Cracker is racist I guess but I don't think I've ever heard someone called that in a serious way, only as a joke or in movies.

Unpleasant people are going to be unpleasant.

To say that cracker is a racial slur is putting it on the same level as the n word when it clearly isn't. There just isn't the same history and power dynamic behind it.
 
In that context, it seemed racist. it'd be hard to argue that it wasn't.

'White Trash' seems a little meaner than 'cracker.'

I feel that 'redneck' is more of a lifestyle choice like 'gangster.'

I really wouldn't care about being called any of them though.
 
People seriously think being called cracker is racist? I didn't know white people could be hurt from cracker of all things. I think the word is hilarious.
 
Every white friend I have has used the term redneck. It kind of makes me uncomfortable honestly. I don't know what to really say in those situations so I say nothing. *shrugs*

Very rarely hear black people say it though.

Cracker is definitely racist and shouldn't be used to insult any white person. Period. With that being said however, it's definitely in the "lower tier" of racial epithets that's for damn sure. When you get right down to it, although it's meant as an insult, it elevates the person it's used at as a person in a position of power.
 
Redneck, no, since it implies more/other things than just race.

I do think cracker is a racial slur, but it should go without saying that it's a very tame one since it does not represent a history of racial oppression.

Neither word bothers me.
 
Redneck, no, as just about any person of any color and/or creed can be redneck-as-shit.

Cracker, I'd probably have to say yes, though it obviously doesn't have a legacy of hate and dehumanization built up behind it like other racial slurs might. Anybody saying it's just as bad as things like "nigger" or "kike" are objectively wrong, in my eyes.

EDIT: I do want to clarify, though, that hateful intention behind either is still really shitty, and worth making note of towards the person who says it.
 
Cracker is a derogatory term, but I don't think I would feel particularly insulted if someone called me a cracker. I would probably be stunned or laughing if someone tried to use it without irony.
 
"Cracker" seems to be more of an America concept, but yeah, I would agree it is a racist slur, if it were used by a non-white, though I doubt too many whites would be all that offended by it. Redneck, not so much. More of a derogatory term, rather like Hillbilly or Canuck.

because as a white person in a white majority country, I find that we have our share of rednecks among us, white trash and trailer trash.
We have them, we have rednecks here, we see them, some families have them, they are among us.

every country on planet earth has a it's own share of rednecks and trailer trash among them.

No matter how ''cultural'' you want to make you home country sound like, you have a % of rednecks in your own country as well

i dunno, if the intent is 'hey slave owner ancestor, go fuck yourself', then it's kinda fucked up. but otherwise it's pretty funny.

i prefer bill burr's whitey.
 
The context is what matters most. I however don't care for people using the words: Redneck and White Trash, to describe any white person who is poor, I'm a poor white person who lives in a conservative state yet I and my family lean more to the left. Cracker is pretty lame though, it doesn't really offend me cause I'm not a food item.

I suppose if you know for a fact that your ancestors were slave owners than the term could have some weight behind it. My ancestors on both sides of my family immigrated to the US from Europe in the 1880s/90s, so "cracker" is utterly meaningless to me.

bolded is irrelevant. the lady characterized all white based on the actions of one. that's racist. if you swapped out the white for a Hispanic person in the story, I'm sure you'd agree it was racist.

if you want to say that mild racism against whites isn't serious, that's fine. I would agree.

but don't change the meanings of words to fit a political agenda.

i meant descendant btw, i always fuck up -cestors and the like even though their prefixes make their definitions pretty clear.

YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.
