lol Ouch! I just got accepted there over the weekend and was super pumped. Then I saw this video...

You should feel good though, UCLA has some great departments. Unfortunately it's also in LA, and as much as socal will defend LA, there are a lot of fake as hell assholes down there.

UCLA isn't that hard to get accepted. They take anyone who transfers from a CC with good grades. It's cheap if you live in CA too.

the only reason people are freaking out about it is cause she's white.

think about what she's really complaining about. she's complaining about people talking on their phone in the library. and old people walking around.

that barely qualifies as racism. its not even stereotypical racism against Asians. the few things she says that can be construed as racism is off-color, and if it were a comedian doing it we'd all laugh and not say anything about it.

the only reason people are freaking out about it is cause she's a white girl who posted a video on youtube, and is "serious" about her complaints.

Haha clearly this white girl hasn't benefited from having asian friends because she's a stupid racist douchebag. Most of my friends are asian and their parents are pretty awesome. Not to mention they cook me food all of the time.

Short version: SHE HELLA JELLY.

>:-/

Then again she did end up making some sounds that were unrelated to any Asian language as far as I know, so that could be construed as to being a direct attack on Asians in general.

It's not the only reason people are complaining about the video, it still shows us that a very fine line of racism still exists even though we're living in a post-racial society today. That or she is a great troll.

However, I do see the viewpoints here that she is allowed a certain level of freedom of speech, but putting it up on Youtube will follow her for life.

It even made it to CNN... They showed half the clip of her rant

:lol smiley

Where do you live bro?

I kind of feel sorry for her. She just seems a bit stupid and naive rather than malicious or anything... she's brought a lot of hate her way and likely jeopardised her education. At least this will be an education of sorts for her.

That guy who replied satirically is a fucking legend. A king of men!

She's jel that the asians at her school have a close family bond while her biological family may have been abusive.

Not that I really know, but that's my guess.

True. You need somewhat of a decent GPA, but it's hard to get into a major you want if you decide to do it that way. Even if you do get the major you want, it might be hard to play catch up.

It's a well known and studied practice of many top American universities to have a white quota minimum, and they limit the number of asians admitted so that their campuses aren't too asian. There have been many articles about this and many Ivy League schools openly admit the policy.
seriously? I've only ever heard about such policies for blacks and hispanics. the people complaining the loudest about it only complain about that specific group benefiting from it. it seems odd that they would leave themselves open to such an easy charge of hypocrisy.

I'd be very interested to read that political essay she'd been writing when those hordes of Asians rudely interrupted her just as she was about to reach an epiphany.

The nice, polite American girl my Mom raised me to be.

She certainly made her mom proud!

I have a coworker that's a UCLA grad in some sort of communications major, as he wants to go into radio. I'm inclined to agree with your post. If he can get in and graduate, probably anyone could.

I couldn't watch the video since Youtube is blocked at my office, but I remember my Korean roommate's parents coming to our apartment to clean and cook for us. It wasn't every weekend since we lived 4 hours away from our respective homes, but it was at least once a month. They would also bring a month's supply of bulgogi in frozen plastic bags for both me and him. They thought I was a good influence on him and so they treated me like a king.

Regarding the parental coddling, I do think it can lead to problems however. I've been living in Japan for the last 5 years and I've been suprised on several occassions about the lack of Japanese mens' ability to do pretty much anything. I realize I'm projecting my own cultural expectations here, and after 5 years I should know better, but I really do believe there are social and economic repercussions to this kind of behavior. Japanese high school students are spoiled rotten by both parents and educators. They are treated like children and thus behave like children. I think most American high school seniors would be shocked at the maturity levels of their Japanese counterparts. Again, I know this is cultural, but this coddling leaves the students ill-equipped to fend for themselves once they head out on their own. I would argue that the detriments far outweigh the benefits here.

I applied as a biochemistry major (chemistry as second choice) with a 3.34 GPA. Is that...good? =[

Ironically, I could say the exact same thing about NorCal, but I don't let other people affect how I enjoy my life.

UCLA undergrad is ridiculously easy to get into, but damn I would have loved to go to med school there

what do you mean? I know it sucks getting classes with budget cuts (my experience is pre-cuts) but shouldn't upper divisions courses be all you need. Talking about humanities courses btw.

You must have missed the part where she said, "Bling blong chong ching chang." Whereas, I heard that part.

She. Is. A. Racist.

The reason this video, as opposed to other videos have taken off, is because she is also incredibly stupid, while simultaneously attending a very well-respected State school. And her tone.

You could say it, but you'd be wrong. There are many aspiring-actors, directors, screenwriters and generally fake people down in LA that make finding genuine people hard. Then they bring their bullshit and drama up here too.

I don't think Asians have it easy from mass media at all.

I don't recall seeing any positive role models or images of Asian males. They're all marital artists who don't get the non-Asian girl or the nerd.

What about

john_cho.jpg

He gets the hot non-asian girl in Harold & Kumar and Flashforward.

Are you serious, Dave?

Race based prejudice is racism. Idon't know if you're trolling or not, but either ways, just shut your face.

So, I finally got around to this thread and watching the video.

First, I was like, "Oh, I'm not really seeing any racism here, just somebody who probably comes from a very insulated culture making observations about another culture in a pretty crude way...and with big fake tittays.

THEN, I got to the part where she started sounding like a racist, instead of just an airhead.

"Ching Chong?" Really?

Yep, NeoGAF delivered the goods here.

People may need to shut up in the library, but come on, girl...

Is the whole 'ching-chong ting-tong' thing really a big deal?
Any language you have no knowledge of and that is so far removed from your own is going to be fairly incomprehensible, sound strange to you and be very difficult to replicate.

I live in Wales. Welsh language gets picked on quite frequently in the media. Mostly by comedians, who always say my language makes you sound like you have a mouth full of spit, then they follow that up with some spitting sounds. Is it insensitive? A bit. Is it stereotypical? Yes. Is it offensive? No, not really because to the uninitiated that is what it sounds like.
I dare someone with no knowledge of the Welsh language to try and pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch without fucking it up and finding it funny. It's un-possible.

You might want to cover your mouth before you try

Exactly! I don't give a shit because I know that someone who doesn't have any knowledge of the language with find the language nigh on incomprehensible, maybe even silly sounding.
The girl wasn't really even being derogatory towards the language. It was a stereotypical impression of something she knows nothing about.

This is funny: A 32DdDDdDddDdDDdDddDdDDdDDdDddDDDDDddddDD? Alert the BBC! Michael McIntyre is a racialist!

Did you just ignore Lindbergh's post or what?

Do some research about how much Wales has been dicked-over by England throughout history.
History pre-dating the USA. How the language was almost extinct post WWI and has barely dragged itself back in recent years. There's a lot of bigoted, politically charged history behind my post too.

I'm unsure of what you're even posting. Just because you don't find ignorance offensive means that people should just chill about awful racist remarks about their own language?

And the girl in the video wasn't playing up a stereotype? Or is she not allowed because she wasn't getting paid for it?

Don't get me wrong, I love every episode where Colbert used the Ching Chong Ding Dong character but ironic or not, it's a racist character.

Fusebox said:
Feel free to elaborate further...

Context.

Steven Colbert says Rush Limbaugh ripped off his wildly insensitive Chinese character, "Ching Chong Ding Dong," with the conservative commentator's imitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Limbaugh was criticized this week for his extremely drawn-out impersonation -- which turns out actually not to have even been in Mandarin (!) -- during a tirade about the lack of line-by-line translations of the president's remarks.

So it's a parody of Rush. The joke is that Stephen is insulted not by racism, but because Rush "stole his bit." So it's an attack on racist pundits not being able to understand their own racism, in character as a racist pundit.

Colbert is a satirical comedian. He is obviously joking. The UCLA chick clearly isn't. Intent and context matter. The biggest reason she's getting so much shit is because she actually means what she says, and it comes off as hateful and bigoted.
