Sadly Ghandi was quite awful if you were a Black South African.
There's a lot more nuance to this point:
A. His viewpoint at least partially shifted over time, after seeing the mistreatment of all coloured people. He was not born a civil rights activist, to say Gandhi was awful to them is a massive overstatement. Gandhi held racist views notable in his life in SA, which is unfortunate and somewhat hypocritical, but a sign of the times.

B. Gandhi is recognised by the SA govt. for his contribution to the movement

Gandhi was not perfect, but he is remembered as the champion of nonviolent resistance for good reasons.

Probably Jesus. Regardless of how he's depicted, people know. I heard of people who are still alive it's Muhammed Ali. Can't recall where I heard that.

Probably:

- Hitler
- Gandhi
- Arnold Schwarzenegger

In that order. Third one might seem weird but honestly I think every human living in what we define as civilization would be able to identify Arnold. He's THE icon of Western ideals and entertainment.

Uh huh

People who really don't care for football aren't going to recognise these two, big as the sport might be worldwide.

I don't know...I know some people who despise the sport, but still know them.

If it's not one of them, it has to be a soccer/football player from the past. (Fat) Ronaldo, for instance, is known EVERYWHERE.

I don't actually think Hitler's face is that recognizable. His mustache certainly is, but not the whole face.

For some reason when I look at un-mostacioed Hitler all I see is Ciaron Hinds (sp), from Rome, Game of Thrones, Tinker Tailor, etc.

Though they look nothing alike in other photos.

Show anybody a picture of Indy and odds are they'd know who it is. The fact that the movies have been out so long along with a recent fourth one helps.

Sadly, I don't think most young people (16 and younger I'd say) could identify the character in that photo. Indiana Jones is totally iconic for anybody 25+ but there's been a steady drop of familiarity for him, also as Harrison Ford has done fewer movies in the last 10+ years.

Maybe in NA and Europe but definitely not in India or China. Same goes for Hitler.

Is he as well-known as Barack fucking Obama? No.

I'm not saying he's the most famous, just very recognisable. I mean, Obama isn't the most recognisable face either. It's gotta be Hitler, Stalin, Mao or Ghandi for sure. The Queen's up there too as the most recognisable female face.

Lol, people mentioning American presidents and actors. Clueless.

Mostly yes, but guys like Pitt, Caprio and Cruise have been leading stars for 20 years and more, starring in massive movies, are source for gossip, appear in many commercials and, not unimportant, are handsome.

That gets you some exposure.

If we're excluding Jesus, then I dunno. There are a lot of answers that would probably be acceptable. Ghandi, Hitler, Miley Cyrus, etc.

Except you can't separate Hitler's iconic mustache from his face, that's part of what makes him the most recognized, i mean, you're basically saying "this face is not recognizable if we take away the unique features that makes it so recognizable".

Can't believe no one put this out there.. Maybe I missed it...:/
Always tickles me that the most famous photo is after the phantom punch and ali shouting get up you bum.

A lot of people look at like him shouting fuck you after a big k.o.

Yes. Much more. China is 4 times bigger than the US dude. C'mon. It's not even a contest. He's fucking Jackie Chan.

Jackie Chan isn't very well-known in the US, and while he might be big in China, he's got little recognition outside of that country. Villagers in Senegal know the name "Barack Obama", and that can't be said about Jackie Chan.

Jackie Chan may have been an OK answer in 1995.

if we are talking GLOBAL recognition, it has to be someone CURRENTLY very famous and well known. Globally it's got to be Barrack.

I don't know. I've never been to Senegal.

I do know China has more population than the entire African continent.

You can argue Obama is more recognisable, but don't tell me people in the U.S don't know Jackie Chan, that's not true.

I want to use the no mustache Hitler to test friends but it's unfair that it's restored in color as you'd instantly start guessing someone more recent.

I'm sure if it isn't Tom Cruise then he is at least the most recognizable film star. His movies are huge in Asia.

I think Hitler had the 'stache for the same reason Steve Harvey does: too much upper lip.

ITT: Americans get a reality check. Yes, no one knows Oprah Winfrey outside the US, and Lincoln is fairly unknown unless you specifically studied ancient US history.
