• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Who here plans on snagging KOF Neowave?

It was announced yesterday that it shipped. I won't be able to search for it until tommorrow or the following day as I am off then.

I've really been looking forward to this release but haven't heard much talk about it here. Given the number of 2D fanboys on this board, that is shameful!

On a plus side, this game will retail for 19.99! How can NeoGAF pass that up? :)

I made a thread about the PS2 version last July. :) I would have gotten the Xbox Neowave, not to mention KOF 2003, but I don't believe they are compatible with the 360. And while I still like Neowave, since that time, I've been playing KOF XI, Neo-Geo Battle Coliseum, and Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuten, which are better fighters IMO.

--Game Info--------
-------------------

The King of Fighters Neowave was the first SNK title to be released on Sammy's Atomiswave arcade hardware rather than the Neo-Geo MVS. The game is essentially an upgrade to The King of Fighters 2002, and while the arcade version altered the line-up by removing several characters or making them unlockable hidden characters, the Playstation 2 version receives an additional five extra characters (Angel, Seth, May Lee, Omega Rugal, and Kusanagi), giving Neowave all of the original 2002 cast (minus K9999) plus Saishyu, King, Shingo, Jhun, and the game's new boss, the younger version of Geese Howard from Art of Fighting 2, making a total of 47 playable characters. Like KOF 2002 and KOF '98 before it, Neowave is a "Dream Match" game, meaning there is no storyline whatsoever.

What's new to KOF Neowave lies in the game play. The game system has now been changed; there are five buttons rather than the standard four; the new fifth button activates your character's Heat Gauge. Going into Heat mode makes your character temporarily stronger, but causes your lifebar to drain until the mode is turned off.

The game play system has now been split into three separate selectable types of modes:

Super Cancel allows for up to three super bars, and the ability to cancel special moves into other special moves. Doing this will use one super bar, and you can also cancel into DMs, SDMs, and HSDMs (must have 1/6th life left) with two or three stocks stored.

Guard Break mode allows for Just Defend parry attacks a la Garou Mark of The Wolves. You get two super bars, and can also do unblockable guard break attacks which use up one of your super meters.

neowavetemple11cg.jpg

Max2 Mode has your character's super meter increases automatically, however, you lose the ability to roll or evade attacks (although you can do recovery rolls when you get knocked down). HSDMs can be done with 1/4th of your lifebar remaining.

Although KOF Neowave's sprites are the same as KOF 2002, Neowave has a noticeably more colorful and smoother look compared to the Neo-Geo KOF games. You can choose from six levels of sprite filtering, as well as edit two of the character's four color schemes.
The backgrounds, high-res 2D in the arcade, and made 3D for the Playstation (both versions are selectable) with added day/night variations, are of a much higher quality than past games, although they do tend to look empty or are devoid of animation for the most part.

Neowave also has a brand new soundtrack, with both the original arcade and a new arranged version available, and both sound immensely better than the soundtracks found in the KOF games that were released after the old SNK shut down back in 2001. While not quite the same, the music reminds more of the older KOF games with mostly jazzier tunes and some tecnho thrown in.

KOF Neowave offers the usual array of play modes, including Team Play, Single Play, Practice, and Endless (survival) mode. Playing through the Endless mode will unlock bonus characters as well as character artwork in the gallery mode.

-------------------
--Overall----------
-------------------

Graphics: 8/10- The filtering options give the characters a smooth, colorful look, but these are still the same old sprites (some dating back to 1996) that are being reused over and over again. The detailed backgrounds really help to enhance the experience and make Neowave stand out from the other KOF games, but they come off as sparse and empty compared to some of the other KOF titles. Presentation is very bland, although none of it means much once you start fighting. Character artwork looks fantastic.

neowaveangel6gn.jpg
neowavecolor3an.jpg

Sound: 8/10- Great music that sounds much better than the soundtracks found in KOF 2001-2003, but still not quite up to pre-2000 standards.

Game Play: 10/10- A bit tighter compared to KOF 2002. The new Guard Break mode in particular makes an already in-depth fighter play even better and allows for even more types of game play. If you like the way KOF 2002 plays, chances are you will love KOF Neowave.

Replay Value: 8/10 (Not counting online play as I am unable to try it)- You can always spend countless hours going head to head with friends, but for single player, It's always nice to have more than just the standard practice and survival modes. Where are the time attack/challenge modes that KOF 2002 had?

-------------------
-------------------

The King of Fighters Neowave offers offers no (real) new characters or content, but there's no denying that this is easily one of the best KOF games in the series, and the new game play systems add more depth and new game play options that really help to enhance the overall experience. Reccomended for fans; casual players will likely want to pass on this and get The King of Fighters 2002/2003 two pack instead.

Just bought KOF2003 UK, ÂŁ9.99. Along with Metal Slug 5 for the same price.

Great price, great boxart, good deal.

Honestly, I'm not much of a KOF fan (I'm more of a SF/GG fan)... and didn't like KOF02/03 at all. But I played this at the Gamers Night Groove/NY Comic Con and it's *AWESOME*. Very smoothly animated, looks great in motion... for $20??? Wow, I'm definitely gonna pick this up!

Its got the same sprites and animation as KOF 2002. ( ^_^;)

I still haven't played 02/03!

No need to play 2002 because of Neowave. At this point I'd just get Neowave and then wait for KOF XI.

I was just playing 2003 last night and wondering when the hell NeoWave was being released. Didn't expect an answer so soon!

Though I wish there was an Xbox version available.

Dr. Kitty Muffins was talking about the Xbox version. :) The PS2 version came out last summer; the Xbox version hit Japan recently, and now it's about to come out in the U.S.

Plan on getting it, but unfortunately can't play online until it's BC, which it should already be. All 2D games should be.

Really? Hmm, well the sprites just appear smoother, or better-filtered... and the backgrounds are MUCH better than 02.

Seriously, if your a SNK mark then get a Xbox if you don't want to go the import route. The price point is super sweet and very appropriate for SNK's releases. They should have been releasing at 20 bucks all along IMO.

Neowave is like 2002 but more depressing because of the lack of effort that went into making the game. Of course, that's my impression of the arcade game.

Who are the 7 unlockable characters anyways?

Hidden/Unlockable characters are:

-Angel
-Geese (AOF2 version)
-Kusanagi
-Kim
-Ramon
-Seth
-Vanessa
-May Lee

Plus the Orochi versions of Shermie, Chris, and Yashiro.

Angel and May Lee aren't in the xbox version (for whatever reason).

They are both Eolith-created characters; maybe that's why, but that's still weird, and completely lame. :/

SNK screws up with another Xbox port yet again!

I'll take comfort in the xbox live play and the $20 price tag. :)

You can play the PS2 version online too. :) I'll take the superior version with two more characters to use, although at this point, I'll just play Samurai Spirits TK and NGBC on my PS2 anwyay. (Although this KOF Neowave discussion is making me want to play it a bit)

If we're being completely honest, I'd rather be playing MI2, though I'm 50/50 on importing it. I'm still waiting on Neowave to ship to me, to see if it can hold me over until my current KOF fixation passes (playing MI and '03 in the meantime). I'm not entirely sure what it is, but I really love this series, with the only black sheep being '02 for me.

Interesting that you don't like 2002, but want Neowave. (^_^;) I think KOF 2001 is the worst KOF in recent memory.

I'm a fan of KOF MI as well; already have MI2 reserved at my local shop, and I'll be picking it up thursday afternoon after work. I'll definitely post impressions. I'm hoping that they fixed the major flaws that the original had. From the sound of things, they have improved the engine.

KOF XI is *THE* KOF game to get, though. The arcade version is awesome, and the PS2 version will be ever better! :D

I'm hoping it'll replace the shoddiness of '02. I personally dug '01, probably because it has all my favorite characters and I liked the four team system, even though I hardly used strikers. It just gave you more flexibilty. The music and backgrounds are crap though.

Same here. It looks better from the vids, but it's hard to tell until I get it into my hands. I want to believe they just didn't slap more characters into the old engine.

Yeah, this is a lock on importing. I'm not even going to bother waiting. Playing '03 is almost painful because I know XI from what I've read that XI improves on it in every way. Can't wait to finally try it.

Copies of KOF: Neowave are starting to trickle into EB/Gamestop stores (in small amounts...so if your local one gets some copies, snag a copy before they are gone!)

As an improved and modified version of KOF 2002, KOF: Neowave is bliss to play and get knee-deep with every fighter since the roster is large and there's 3 gameplay modes to get down and dirty with (Super Cancel, Guard Break, and Max2).

Thirty-six characters are available from the outset (from a total of 46). The hidden characters are immediately available from the outset provided you hold down the R Trigger as you select specific characters:

37. Orochi Yashiro (Yashiro)
38. Orochi Shermie (Shermie)
39. Orochi Chris (Chris)
40. Geese Howard (K')
41. Ramon (Maxima)
42. Vanessa (Whip)
43. Kim Kaphwan (Jhun Hoon)

Going through Endless Mode (basically Survival Mode), you can unlock the final 3 fighters once you beat them:

44. Kusanagi (KOF 94' version)(Kyo Kusanagi)
45. Seth (Shingo)
46. Omega Rugal (Saisyu)

Sadly, Angel and May Lee didn't make the U.S. Xbox version due to probable licensing issues with Eolith, but with such a large cast present, it's not too depressing.

The Endless Mode also plays host to unlocking everyone's portrait in the Gallery Mode, so here's where the replay value comes in when you fail to beat Omega Rugal and Geese in the final 2 matches....haha.

As Lyte Edge stated, KOF: Neowave is robust in terms of options. You can select between the high-res 2D backgrounds from the arcade version (by choosing Arcade in the Graphics setting), and the redone 3D variants (by choosing Normal in the Graphics setting). Original and Arrange soundtracks are selectable from the Sound setting, you can choose between Soft and Normal filters for the overal display, and you can choose between 6 levels of graphics quality for the fighters' sprites.

Of course, with Neowave now on Xbox, there's taking on your buds via Xbox Live. Do Quick Matches, host Tournaments, peruse the Lobby, and view scoreboards on Statistics to see who the current king of the iron fist is.....oh wait, that's Tekken....haha. Friends List and Voice is also supported. Like SVC Chaos and Samurai Shodown V before this, there's little to no lag when playing online. Why SNK couldn't make this element stable in the cancelled Xbox version of KOF 94' Rebout is beyond me.

KOF: Neowave is the last current-gen fighting title for Xbox by SNK. With SNK now moving forward with next-gen hardware and handhelds (with no hope of seeing the PS2 versions of KOF XI, Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuten, and Neo-Geo Battle Colisseum stateside), here's hoping they port those games to Xbox 360 and PS3 so we can play those games domestically.
