Who is Draven and how is he beating Link in the GameFAQs character battle?

I realize he's from League of Legends. But how is he achieving this? Why is this guy so popular? It's hard to fathom anyone beating Link in popularity aside from a staple like Cloud and this guy shows up out of nowhere and is doing this.

LoL is pretty goddamn huge right now, like just compare how many viewers it gets on twitch tv compared to the next game over, which would be Black Ops 2, Minecraft, Dota 2, and whatever else. The gap is immense a lot of the time.

Reddit rally

Personally, I'm impressed Link is actually holding strong at 39% here. He's by far the strongest character in these things usually, and he's not going down without a fight

The League of Legends subreddit is rallying Link, much to the dismay of the GameFAQs regulars.

In other words, Link would be dominating Draven if it weren't for external rallies.

Draven would've lost to Jak and Chie if it weren't for rallies. (Look at "View Map and Detailed Results", and then "Chart")

And look what the rallies did to Mega Man X and Ryu, the former of which is probably the strongest character in the Character Battles outside of the Noble Nine itself (Link, Mario, Samus, Crono, Cloud, Sephiroth, Sonic, Mega Man, and Snake).

Note that these polls usually get ~30,000 posts just based on GameFAQs, so Draven literally got pretty much all his 50,000+ votes from that match from Reddit rallies.

Vote for Link.

I'm not a LoL player, but clearly he's being used to show off how much the fans love that game. Any mascot will do, right?

Those polls would be incredibly boring if the same Nintendo characters won every year. More power to those rallies.

L Block only won when Link and Cloud weren't in the contest, or something.
Cause Link and Cloud never, ever lost the contests.

I was going to say...I am pretty sure the L-block from Tetris won in 2007. Not sure if that was due to 4chan or what.

L-Block won because the entire Internet was for L-Block, including those within GameFAQs because they were tired of Link Always Wins.

L-Block was a GameFAQs joke first.

Draven never was and League of Legends is very unpopular on GameFAQs, so GameFAQs doesn't appreciate Draven breaking Link Always Wins.

Draven was getting crushed in the first round before the reddit rally got started. It's about 97% reddit and 3% people who whine because Link always wins. The contests are stupid and this sort of thing happening is exactly what GameFAQs wants to happen because it drums up hits for the front page. They but the stop on vote stuffing but don't care how or why a character gets votes.

LoL's popularity is weird. Not as a judgement of the game or fans etc, but as an outsider, I know almost zero about it. Millions upon millions play the game but it is still kinda 'underground' as far as mainstream recognition goes. At least from what I see, anyway.

That feel when you will never have a Gamefaqs LUE account, and even if you did, it's primetime was almost a decade ago.

Link
40.35%

Draven
47.03%

Seems that Link is gaining ground now that i refreshed, its old school retro gamers vs. MOBA enthusiasts, the battle of our time /Gandalf

I remember L Block winning, but that seemed like a joke vote that everyone ended up latching onto. Hell I voted for him every time.

This doesn't seem like a joke. What's the deal with the rally? Just LoL fans wanting the win?

Play a single game of LoL and you'll immediately understand why.

Way back when, it was always Link vs. Cloud. People eventually got tired of it and started tp vote against them just for the sake of seeing a new winner.

You know League of Legends is significantly more popular today than Zelda as a franchise ever was, and that's not even including its decline in relevance over recent years, right? -- this notwithstanding any silly poll shenanigans.

These polls are boring regardless, to be honest.

Its hard for me to imagine Link of all characters even being able to beat the likes of Solid Snake, Ryu, Cloud, Pacman and the like.

Link has been around a long time, and is popular, but its never been a humongo-gigantor franchise. I guess perhaps it was in the SNES-N64 era and the NES era in particular (I suppose it sounds like a long time when you say it like that). But outside of that... Snake Ryu and Cloud seem like they would be just as iconic, perhaps just not as old.

Link always wins unless:

- he's not allowed in the contest
- another joke vote pushed by an outside source

The charge to see someone else win has grown but if you look at the vote totals Draven was off the charts last round for sure. It has literally nothing to do with how popular LoL is.

In all fairness, Nintendo has done all they can to make Link an also-ran. There was a time that a new Zelda game was received as an important moment for video games, Zelda games were genre defining masterpieces. Now they're predictable action adventure games that don't really resonate.
