Who knew that giving a female character feminine features would be so offensive.

To me it seems like you're making all kinds of excuses to normalize this type of physical appearance to females. Not sure what your aim is but in the real world outside for most women that's not the norm. It never has been and it never will, even if there are some women irl who choose to look like men.
Ok, well to me it seems like you have a very specific agenda called "I don't want to look at ugly people I don't consider feminine" I think your perception of what's normal is pretty skewed in the "real world outside" Do lots of women choose to wear makeup and accentuate feminine features? Sure, a lot of them do. Would an astronaut stranded deep fighting aliens give a shit about any of that? Nope, that's why it fits the game. You must have gone outside and looked at other people's faces before? You could go look in the mirror right now and I'm gonna guess a supermodel isn't looking back at you. I'm in the same boat! Just an average looking person, like most people. Can we make our game characters more than average? Yes we have that ability. Does it take away from their relatability? I would argue it does. Does this character look like a butch lesbian? Yeah you could say that, butch lesbians also exist and some people even find them attractive. Not my personal taste, but I would follow that bitch into battle because she looks like a strong and capable character.

On earth, the reason most human males are driven to attractive females is to procreate and continue the species. Subconsciously or consciously, we look for the most suitable mate to insure good genes are passed on. This was integrated into all of male entertainment, backed up by the sales research throughout the decades. They know this, so what's changed? The fault lies in the human resources departments. The ones hiring. These positions are now filled by graduates of Gender Studies degrees and they're filling the positions with Tumblr artists that have different sexual preferences than the audience they are trying to sell to AND actively HATE them (YOU/straights). Now that they can infiltrate these companies through "Diverthity and Inclusion", they can get to work tearing down an industry filled with the people they wish were dead. An industry with an audience that never represented them (although never purposefully being excluded). They had the time to build up a network throughout the industry now. That's why it seems so widespread. There are a few in this thread, so be careful. Look out for the gaslighting and stomp them out when they try it on you. It's mental illness. They will try and neutralize your fight. Just come back hard.

The debate over Selene is very strange to me. I love Returnal and I think Selene is a cool character. I also love, like, Ivy from Soul Calibur. There is room for all different types of characters and no one should be trying to make every single character design conform to any specific template. It’s okay for some characters to be sexy. It’s also okay for some characters to not be.

What would you bet your business on? Your future, and potentially, families future?

I think it is more that she looks like an ugly man rather than an ugly woman that is the issue. That said you dont see her except inside the suit in gameplay so it really doesnt matter.

With so many games trending to female characters and woke-ish art styles, lets face it. Most gaming is still guys, especially competitive shooter killing kinds of games. So some gamers will feel snubbed.

I don't know why it's so hard in gaming, but aside from RPGs it seems almost impossible for devs to make a few characters to choose from - one man and one woman. You don't even have to give gamers an option for detailed character creation like name, hair, height or skin colour. Just make a couple choices. Yet a lot of games are one character based. Even canned shooters have different looking characters based on the class you pick. Even Call of Duty allows you to pick a gender.

First off i wasn't talking about female beauty that's subjective. What im talking about is when devs make female characters look like men on purpose. That's not what you call a "plain looking person" that's what you call "I'm confused if this is a male or female".

Be honest now, does this character look like a female to you? :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Looks like Bill Maher to me:

While I have no problem with developers showing some more average-looking women and body types in general, it does feel a bit performative with how overboard they've been going in the past few years. Even going so far as repurposing male bodies for female characters and the like. That's just silly.

For me the weirdos are the biology negationists.
A young attractive female will always attract more players and make them invest more time in the game even if it doesnt have anything to do with the gameplay.
Is just how we work and some of us embrace that, which IMO is what's best.

It's not up to you to determine what's best for a main\secondary character in a video game though. It's up to the DEVs.

She also looks like this in the game too. The only difference is, she has her helmet off and not making an aggressive facial expression.

I mean it does read as a female to me. There's definitely some more masculine features. People that look like that exist, not everyone is a supermodel. I think they deserve to exist in games too. To me she looks like a hardened astronaut, I haven't played the game but that's the message I'm getting from the design. I'm not seeing a problem, unless the game has a popup that says if you misgender this character you're a misogynist.

Nah dude, you made me see the light.
Attractive people are for homos.
Real super straight men simp for imaginary chicks that look like they ate a wasp nest, bro.
Hell yeah dude, bro.

No, I think you've got it all wrong. I need every female in media to make my dick hard. And if they don't make my dick hard then who is it even created for? When I'm shooting aliens I need at least a half chub going at all times. This is the problem with SJW's is they don't understand what makes my dick hard.

Wow, what a regular looking person. Something seems off though... quick someone go tell Anne Beyer that she isn't a woman and actually looks like a man, ahhh now everything is right with the world.

No can do, brother.
Your wills and wishes matter not, as your betters have determined your place on this earth.

I don't like that shit either. This thread was created to share an experience of someone insisting a character be made less sexy while ignoring the designer's intentions. So your response is to insist a character be made more sexy while ignoring the designer's intentions? Can't you see that you're the equal and polar opposite kind of idiot to the ones that you hate so much?

Abby is an individual character that took exceptional lengths to prepare herself for revenge, and her body is a part of that preparation. I can understand why a lot of people dislike her character, but I think many people hate her body type as an extension of their hatred of her.

Imagine for a moment that Abby looked the same way, but her entire role in the game was to hunt down the person who killed her mother. Then, when Joel ends up being killed by the same guy who killed killed her mother, Abby teams up with Ellie in a quest for mutual revenge. How badass would Abby be then?

How would that affect how many people hated Abby's character? How many people would complain that she looks like a man, and it's unrealistic that she's so strong, or that her body is so muscular? I'm guessing the number would be considerably smaller. People hate abby's body and abby's face because they hate abby. And I would argue that they have a good reason to hate abby, but to each their own.

That makes total sense to me. Good point. Even though I really like Abby as a character, I can see why some people don't like her. And how not liking her can lead to other conclusions.

For years, religious conservative moral busybodies told gamers "that character is too sexualized, and they are morally offensive" Now it's simply a different group trying to impose their moral values on others, but it's resulting in the same thing.

Now, I will say that I think the height of female sexualization in video games was perhaps a bit much from a "this feels like pandering" perspective. I thought that was especially true during the days of "booth babes." But what's happening now feels like a considerable over-correction.

The thing is, censorship comes into play when someone imposes their moral values on others. That's really the lost piece of the puzzle in this debate. The argument isn't "the artist is always right," or "the artist must always make what I want," the argument is "it's wrong to impose your moral values on others."

Now, if the main character from Returnal was designed because "we thought it would be cool to have a space mom of sorts kicking alien ass" that's just fine. Full support of the artist there. Not every character has to be young and beautiful. But if the reasoning for the design was primarily due to moral issues, and those were a major part of why the character ended up as they did, that's where you've lost me, and where you've likely lost many others.

Of course every artist is going to have their own personal values in the back of their mind when designing characters, so it's understandable that there's a lot of grey area here. Where things get considerably more black and white is during interviews when the artists and game directors can sometimes not only make their intentions known, but also cast a considerable amount of judgement on those who feel differently. I would imagine you don't or wouldn't like companies telling you that your view of morality is wrong, and neither does anyone else.

First off, you don't know the designer's intentions.
I don't think people not caring about the game was part of it.
If their intention was to be gruff and realistic, they failed horribly, as their own gameplay shits on that with a vengeance. We've already been through this.
Whatever intentions were behind mrs Ugly mug, the only purpose she ends up serving is putting off potential fans.
This is what I judge and mock them for.
There is being daring and bold. And then there is stepping on a rake that everybody could see from outer space.
Also, quote me saying the word "sexy" anywhere in this thread outside this post. Maybe catch up with the fact that it was your strawman and not at all my position.

Yes, games need attractive characters as main leads.
They also need enjoyable systems.
Responsive controls.
Levels that are fun to traverse.
Pleasant music.
A coherent visual style.

These evil dogmas restraining creative minds just keep piling up!

Abby and Ellie are both "attractive" girl protagonists, yet you got people getting bent over it.
Sometimes just hearing this devs talk can set up flames on the fans who hold strong opinions opposed to those of the devs, they would be better shutting up and letting the game do the talkin if the feel so confident about it.

Good looking feminine women are looked down upon these days. Just look at this guy saying Abby and Ellie are attractive. In what world is some roided up she freak with the face of a 20 year old incel or some boyish college age lesbian with a body like a 12 year old boy considered attractive? I'd love to see the type of people saying this stuff. How ugly and unfuckable are they?

Remember when women like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were considered attractive? Now they'd be considered too skinny, too pretty, too white, tits too big, ass not big enough, hair too long, not enough drawings all over their bodies that look like they were drawn on with sharpie by a mentally disabled 4 year old.
