Who owns the rights to Crystalis?

I know that Nintendo bought them to make that abomination of a remake on GBC, but they have not done anything else with the IP. If the rights have reverted, why no VC release, or if Ninty still has them, why have they not done anything with them. I mean, it may not be as big as earthbound but this game does have a cult following..... I would love to see the Nes version on the Wii U VC, or the lackadaisical GBC version on the 3ds at least to acknowledge it's there.

You sure Nintendo bought the IP? Wikipedia says they licensed from SNK for the GBC re-release. SNK might still own it?

I remember reading somewhere that they bought the rights to the ip, but if they did just license it then that would explain the Snk logo still on the GBC remake title screen?

Well, I'd like to see the IP revived. If was a fun, fast-paced action RPG with upgradable sword powers. If not a true revival/successor, then perhaps a spiritual one. Is there no indie throwback title in development out there which has cited "Crystalis" as one of its chief inspirations?

Loved this game as a kid, better than either of the Zelda games that came out for the NES.

I can still recall at least 3 tracks from this game from memory and I haven't played it in about two decades. I'd probably be down for a remake or sequel to Crystalis just for a chance of neat remixes of the soundtrack.

This, the 2 NES Zelda games, and Arkista's Ring (I have no idea why I remembered this game all of a sudden lol) were pretty much what got me into gaming

Crystalis, together with StarTropics and The Guardian Legend, is one of those games that I know quite well through other people's stories and positive impressions, but have never really played myself (despite loving similar games like the original Legend of Zelda and Faxanadu). I'm afraid that if I would try to play it now without any nostalgia, that it won't win me over though.

This is also one of those games that I would love to know more about in terms of its development, for instance why SNK decided to make a action-adventure game on the NES all of a sudden. Edit: perhaps John Szczepaniak will cover the game in his upcoming Kickstarted book about the Untold History of Japanese Game Developers?

I would love to see this franchise come back though, or to see it released on the VC for the people that do like it or want to try it.

No thread about it can be complete without its fabulous box art, so as a bonus here is both the front and back:

Loved Crystalis back in the day.

Other NES titles that could have used sequels are

Battle of Olympus
Faxanadu
Magic of Scheherazade

This is my personal favorite NES game; the game in my mind has just the right length and pace, great music and art, and is fun to play with a great adventuring feel. Honestly the game works so well as a standalone title I really don't need another.

SNK made the original Crystalis, so I would assume they own the rights, but are really more concerned with Neo Geo stuff to have D4 publish a random NES game, albeit an awesome NES game, on the Virtual Console. Crystalis appeared to come about during the time period after SNK stopped making arcade hardware the way everyone else did but before SNK released the Neo Geo. They were working on the ideas that would become the Neo Geo at the time of Crystalis' release.
