Who remembers the glorious Half-Life 1 PS2 port?

Then why do ppl keep saying it had weird controller arrangements? Did it use its two sticks like modern FPS do now? Left stick for forwards/backwards and strafing while right stick to look?

Half-Life 1 and 2 should be played with a mouse and keyboard.

Eh, it worked fine with controller. Half-Life is not the type of game where you need fast precision, even on Hard. The Assassins are the only fast enemy, and there are like 5 or 6 in the whole game.

If we're talking original Black Mesa Source, thats a different story. With the overpowered marines...

Yeah, remember Timesplitters was a launch title that use that setup, don't know why Halo gets the credit.

It's the only version of HL1 I've played, and I played it only... 5 years ago or so?

I thought it played pretty well. I love how fast the game is.

I'm planning on finding a copy with a cheap mouse and keyboard when I get another ps2. Some weird glitch prevented me from beating the final boss on the PC version years ago.

Wasn't co-op pretty much the same campaign as the original or was it a completely different storyline?

LMAO that's a good picture to show the state of gaming during the PS1 era. Now twin stick FPS is standard but back then you couldn't even find a game that she's the right stick, let alone one that used both primarily!

How did Alien Resurrection controlled on PS1 if you didn't own a Dualshock and we're stuck with an old digital PS1 dogbone pad?

Still have a copy that I bought at GameStop many years ago. I have not played the damn thing yet! This thread just reminded me of this fact.

I played it a few years ago and thought it was okay. Iirc the only weird thing about the controls was the stick sensitivity felt off, like the idea hadn't been perfected yet.

My only reason for remembering them was HL Decay and the extra Kelly Bailey music in the menus. I didn't play through the whole game on PS2, but tried a friends. They did a decent job, though I'd be the one using a keyboard and mouse. Never actually played Decay on the PS2, but instead played through it's PC unofficial port, which was surprisingly fun, but mostly because it was with a friend.

Shame HL hasn't been brought to more recent consoles. It's always 2 onwards.

I had a "gaming" Macintosh (Quake III alpha oh yes), Dreamcast, and N64 when Half Life first came out, so this was the first time I got to play, luckily I knew to use a mouse and keyboard with it. It was a great experience, enough that I finally bought a gaming PC for Half Life 2. But as impressive as its engine and atmosphere as were at the time, Half Life 1's level design and AI have overall made it the experience which has aged better.

I remember it. A friend had it, and it actually performed really well. I was playing the PC version at the time however. I did like some of the overhauls and wished the PC version had them at the time since the higher resolution was nicer.

That'd be cool if the unofficial HL1 and Opposing Force remakes (Black Mesa and Operation Black Mesa) came to consoles so the newer generation could experience greatness.

I remember renting this and for some reason not having a memory card, so I ended up playing through most of it without turning my PS2 off. Awesome port.

Could never get into this series. I love fps shooters but for some reason no matter how many time I tried to play hl2 I just couldn't see it through. I have it for pc and the 360. I remember driving some boat that seemed like it dragged on for hours.

Doom 3 PvP on Xbox was pretty cool if I remember correctly. My cousin and I use to silently hide in a dark corner and rev our chainsaws the second someone passed by. Pants were shat.
Good one.

Appears to be a SKU worthy of remembering and (re)porting. One of the most important PC games already has a console port with valued added content, that is unique. A digital console release I think makes sense.

Hah, yeah I remember that and the Doom 3 Xbox port. Hell they even ported CS Condition Zero! Weird times... those games really didn't work very well on console at the time.

People either have strange memories or had unrealistic expectations about those ports. Doom 3 was extremely good on the OG Xbox. The levels were truncated, but many (myself included) feel this actually improved the experience as what was removed was largely aimless meandering. It also had a fantastic control feature I've never seen replicated, namely dynamic aiming sensitivity which meant you could turn more quickly when holding the run button. The HL2 port was likewise amazing for being so faithful. It was my first time playing HL2 and I never felt like I experienced it in a diminished way at all.

The PS2 port of Half Life suffers from frequent frame rate dips, if I recall correctly, but it was pretty solid overall.

Yup, played this game and thought, "what the fuck is with these controls?!"

To be fair, going from Wolf to Doom to Quake was pretty jarring too. "What the hell? Mouse looks?"

Here's the original Quake Id1\config.cfg

bind "w" "+forward"
bind "s" "+back"
bind "a" "+left"
bind "d" "+right"
bind "q" "+lookup"
bind "z" "+lookdown"
bind "v" "+movedown"
bind "f" "+moveup"
bind "UPARROW" "+forward"
bind "DOWNARROW" "+back"
bind "LEFTARROW" "+left"
bind "RIGHTARROW" "+right"
bind "ALT" "+strafe"
bind "CTRL" "+attack"
bind "SHIFT" "+speed"
bind "INS" "+klook"
bind "DEL" "+lookdown"
bind "PGDN" "+lookup"
bind "END" "centerview"
bind "MOUSE1" "+attack"
bind "MOUSE2" "+forward"
bind "MOUSE3" "+mlook"

Shit wasn't obvious back then.

I owned it because I had played it on a PC in the late 90s which couldn't play it.
The PS2 version was really good. One of the best PC to console games ever.

Yes it was brilliant. Never beat it though (got stuck at some part of Xen).

The co-op was so cool. Was it also released on PC? I can't remember.

I wish we would get this on PS4, would love to play it again.

That is what I think too, Half-Life 1 has always been the game with better level design.

Also when HL1 first came, the game was a HUUUUGE revolution in terms of gaming. I mean there hasnt been a bigger leap in FPS gaming since, or dare I say gaming in general.

The GFX, Sound design, music, gameplay all working together in seamless harmony.

I probably still own this. It was the only way that I could play Half-Life and I got excited when it was released.

I hope I got it back from my friend at the time.

I remember it being a good port of a good game. I got stuck near the end, though.
