Why are people so sure there will be a nextgen GTA V?

I don't see it happening either. The majority of people who will have a next-gen console within the next two years will probably have played GTA V already. It will take years for PS4 and Xbox One to reach the install base that current-gen consoles have. Why waste the money?

Agreed. Unless both Xbox One & PS4 starts building up huge install bases from the start of their launches, there's a very slim chance that a GTA V port will happen.

It's best to start with GTA VI instead with 2-3 years into their lifespans.

What does it hurt to wait? I don't know about PS4 and Xbox One but every home console GTA has come to PC at some point.

There's going to be next gen versions, no doubt. It's already developed in multi-platform fashion with PC's. Porting to next gen would be fairly easy. (If you think there's going to be PC version at all, it should be much easier to think there's going to be next gen versions.)

If they like money where it is on will make them that money. Whatever next gen sales will not add to what they have made on the consoles.

They really want it to exist. If any next-gen SKUs come out, I wouldn't expect to see them until next summer at the earliest.

When Rockstar releases PC versions of their games, its always after the console versions, I presume in an effort to mitigate piracy. I wonder about the timing of the PC version and a next-gen version. Will they be concurrent? Will Rockstar release a next gen version after the PC version? Or would they delay the PC version to arrive after the next gen versions? Interesting to think about (for me, anyway)

They're releasing the biggest game in their history on the eve of a new system launch. This effectively destroys their long-term sales, unless they launch a version for the next-gen systems as well.

Also, it's inevitably coming to the PC in the Spring. So, while you're releasing one premium version - why not port it to the other systems as well?

Of course they will release a next gen version. They are just trying to sucker as many people as they can into buying last gen version so they double dip. Good marketing strategy to maximize profits.

They release late on PC to get people who are too impatient to wait for PC version and so the suckers to buy it twice. They are most likely doing the same with next-gen versions.

pc and next gen consoles have very similar architectures. A port from pc to ps4 should not take more than a few months. If GTAV hasnt released on at least one next gen system by the end of 2014 i'll eat a hat or take an avatar bet.

I'm just sure there will be a PC version, which could easily be ported to PS4 in time maybe for GOTY version which wouldn't be too interesting to release on PS3 360 or wiiU when it's ready.

I think it's a given. If history is anything to go by, Rockstar will release a GOTY version, and with that I think we'll see prettier ports on the next gen consoles. I expect the same thing with Batman.

You think they just press a button and its done?
For a game of that size you need months of dev time, no matter how easy, then months of QA, certification costs, even more QA, physical media costs and shipping, etc. All involve people being assigned, and if those people are busy then you need to hire more, which takes months of HR costs.
I'm talking millions, and that's not including any advertising you may want to do for your new version of your old game.
If a ps4/xbone version isn't announced within weeks of any potential PC version then it will never happen, because the only people who can do it will move onto the next game.
And PC version may never happen, they'll make so much money from consoles why bother doing all the dev work for a format that still has major piracy problems and is a bitch to optimise for.

Yeah, it's not like the studio that does all their PC ports was hiring programmers to "bring our latest titles to the PC platform".

Makes sense in my opinion.
Many people, including a lot of us on GAF will double dip no problem. And since next gen consoles don't offer backwards compatibility, a next gen version could be what some would like in order to unplug their ps3/360 and still continue to play the game, especially online.

Plus better graphics.

There probably will be. A GTA V port, which will basically be a port of the PC port, with the additional DLC.

Here's a way to look at it:

  • Rockstar already view GTA V as 'next-gen', in terms of their games.
  • The reason GTA V isn't on next-gen consoles is because of starting development 4/5 years ago. It is probably also because Rockstar and Take-Two realize that people will purchase it again for a second platform.
  • GTA VI is a long way away. I can't see Rockstar North embarking on another mammoth project in years.
  • GTA V would probably benefit from being on PS4/Xbox One, from a technical level. They could shift some sliders, which appear shifted in their early trailers. Again, they probably have an unannounced PC version to avoid month one piracy screwing up their sales, and a PS4/Xbox One version would be a PC port, of sorts.
  • They can bundle it with any DLC GTA V might get in a similar way to Episodes from Liberty City, and present it as a full price game.

Because people will buy it regardless of what you think. I can almost guarantee you there will be a next-gen version within a year or two, mark this post. I'm calling it. The next-gen consoles are basically PC's, making a PC version and next-gen versions won't be that difficult.

If anything, I think they might skip the game itself and go straight to calling it GTA Online, with a slew of new content, like Liberty City, or Vice City etc. Look at all the major next-gen games, The Division, The Crew, Watch Dogs, Destiny etc, all have a persistent online world. GTA Online is designed with the next-gen consoles in mind.

might have something to do with them already making a pc version for sure and brand new systems coming out in a couple months?

just maybe?

the marketing they had about Max Payne 3 mutliplayer tying into GTA 5 is all the proof you need, for atleast PC

i dont think then assuming the next gen consoles will get it, makes alot of sense.

otherwise, why didnt the PC versions of GTA 3/VC/SA get ported over to next gen at the time rather than just the crappy Xbox version of SA and they took 2 years to do a "next gen" version of Bully, so its ciealry not as easy as just downscalling from the PC version, otherwise when they had the huge Steam unvailiing of the entire Rockstar catalog they would of released those games on PS3 and 360 as well but in higher quality from PC source.

im sure they'll have something else like Agent to push next year, or any other major Take Two title(2k, 2k Sports, ect..), which i think most people never think of. they're not going to bury another game and re-release GTA in the same quarter

rockstar may have alot of leniency when it comes to deadlines, but they're still owned by a parent company who runs several other game developers and has to plan release dates accordingly

It would be a horrible business decision not to release a next gen GTA V.

The game is releasing on the cusp of the new generation, barely two months before the new systems drop. It will break records and make massive profits, but a significant number of casual sales will be lost, especially over the holidays.

The game's budget is astronomical, and Rockstar are already working on a PC version. Both consoles were designed to make porting from PC easy, and while the install bases will take time to grow, pre-orders suggest that an awful lot of next gen boxes will find their way into people's homes over the next couple of months. Even with three times as many launch games, GTA V would steamroll what little competition exists on the PS4 and Xbone.

Given the time and money that has already gone into this game, there is no way it won't end up on new gen systems eventually.

Wouldn't Rockstar be the biggest idiots if they spent all this money on assets/textures/models, when they didn't anticipate next-gen arriving?

Obviously they have higher resolution versions of the textures available, at least for the PC version?

Just increasing the resolution, texture quality, draw distance and adding some additional shaders would make this a 'next-gen' worthy game.
The reason why they're mum on the PC version is because they expect people to buy it twice, if not three times when the next-gen version finally comes out.

I think that there will be a PC version. Only because of R*'s record with GTA since GTAIII, theyve released a PC version about 8 - 10 months after the console version every time.

I do not think that vanilla GTA V will be released on next gen, I'd almost gaurantee it.

That said, I think that GTA Online will launch on Nextgen after 12 - 18 months. It will have an HD version of Los Santos, and will also expand out into Liberty City and eventually other cities.

Of course there will be. The only reason they haven't said anything yet is because they don't want to cannibalize the ENORMOUS opening sales of current gen console versions by making people think they can get it elsewhere. Ideally, they want consumers to be so impatient to get it that they buy it for the current gen... and then when they see it running much smoother and with better graphics on the next gen hardware, they double dip. Rockstar will be laughing all the way to the bank.

This. On quarterly calls other publishers have attributed soft pre-order numbers for major games to the generation switch confusion.

Generally speaking, AAA games recoup or fail in the first month. Not only do they have to protect the Sept release window, if they play their cards right they will have a second huge release month for the next gen version.
