Why can't my girlfriend watch original Star Wars?

i feel weird cuz i was born in 91 and i've watched all the star wars movies (with edits, most of which are really obvious) and i honestly don't think they hold up well... and this is coming from someone who watches old marx brothers movies.
Yea, I kind of agree. I'm a bit older still(born in 83) and while I still have some love for Star Wars, a lot of it is holdover/nostalgia from being a kid and I can totally see that it probably doesn't hold up too well for newer viewers.

Gen Xer here (born in 74), and will ensure that my son will see the unaltered versions when he is old enough..

Don't care what my girlfriend thinks about Star Wars, though..

Unpopular opinion time; the cgi may be bad in a new hope, but cgi jabba that looks like a Hutt, instead of the fucking bloke standing there in the original release, is way better imo. Puppet was cool though, he could have stayed.

The edits in ep IV and V aren't really that bad, except for the Han shot first edit. Ep VI is by far the worst offender in terms of edits. They're still very watchable.

That said if you want the original version you can go for Harmy's despecialized editions, but these will soon be obsolete once Team Negative1 release their own scan and restoration of theatrical Star Wars prints. They've already released a 22GB 1080p quick and dirty unrestored grindhouse version of ep V that looks amazing.

Human Jabba was never released theatrically. It only came to light years after the films came out, and only as bonus on the discs. It wasn't until Lucas started fiddling with the films did he reinsert that scene into the film with a terrible CGI slug Jabba.

If you really care that much about Star Wars just be lucky that you have a girlfriend at all and don't bother her with 35 year old science fiction movies. ;)

I love star wars and I've only seen the remasters, and I cannot be fucked to watch a shitty vhs copy or a fan edit to see it "properly". When Disney finally pump them out I'll watch them. Oh, and my girlfriend loves star wars more than I do lol.

My GF knows I like star wars so she's asked why I've never made her watch the movies. I told her she doesn't need to see them unless she wants too because she might get bored and fall asleep. Only trilogy I've made her watch was Indiana Jones, but she ended up loving those. If I'm not willing to watch movies such as Twilight with her, I'm not making her watch OG Star Wars. That said, we'll be there Day 0 for The Force Awakens. Lol.

Honestly, not watching Star Wars is just as bad as cheating. It shows that she has low moral fiber and that is unacceptable. It's almost as bad as a partner with a low trophy count or gamerscore. Move on OP.

When my wife watched the original Trilogy with me, I didn't care that they were the "newer" versions, because the differences don't matter enough to someone who is a first time viewer. How about you just show her those and get over it?

It's best not to let personal bias get in the way. Your GF may not care for whatever was changed/added other than the really obvious ones like CG Jabba.

This is my thinking.

Like when parent's want their kids to experience some special moment the exact way they experienced it when they were young. They just don't care.

I would just give her the Blu-Ray versions of the films. The sound is amazing too.

I do have to wonder if Disney will ever release the original movies in Blu-Ray unedited since I'm sure they know how much the revisions Lucas made to them have caused such a negative reaction within the fanbase? I mean, you would think they would be up for this.

They will. It's only a matter of time. They won't leave the money on the table.

Once they do come out, I'm also hopeful Disney will get prints to the Library of Congress for preservation. That asshole Lucas has refused all these years.

I recently rewatched Empire and couldn't help but laugh at the the Emperor & Vader's evil scheme to deal with "the son of Skywalker."

1. Set up a trap in Cloud City.
2. Freeze Luke for easy transport -- is this really fucking necessary?
3. Unfreeze Luke (once Vader brings him to the Emperor I guess).
4. Offer him a deal he can't refuse: join the dark side or die.

Why the FUCK would Luke join the dark side after the Empire killed his parents, blew up Alderaan, killed Obi Wan, killed a bunch of his friends on the Death Star, froze Han Solo, and THEN froze him? Luke's gonna be all like, "Yeah guys, I totally wanna join the dark side now!"

I feel like this is something that gets often overlooked.

I highly recommend these. The amount of effort that was put into A New Hope is absolutely astounding. Apparently these are pretty close to the theatrical release of trilogy, but I'm not an expert on that.

Rewatching the trilogy really made me appreciate Episodes IV and V since it had been some time since I last saw them. It also made me dislike Return of the Jedi a lot. Personally, I think that is where the films went downhill. The emphasis on Ewoks in that film is really lame.

That's because, much like Harry Potter, the plot of Star Wars is stupid. It's fun, the characters are likeable, and there are plenty of great scenes, but it's still stupid.

Honestly, who gives a shit? Well apparently a lot of people do, but personally I don't.

They're just kids movies, meant to entertain the family or whatever. Yeah, I get it's annoying when you grew up with them but boo-hoo, there's plenty of good entertainment outside of Star Wars that you can be happy about.

Yes, the Cgi and extras are annoying and tamper with your memories, but does it really matter? If you love these films so much then it can't have upset you to the point where you can't watch them?

I fucking LOVED star wars as a kid-early teen, but these days I just don't give a shit. I couldn't care less they are making new ones. And if your gf has gone her whole life with only seeing the Phantom Menace, then she really isn't missing out, special editions or not.

My wife loves Star Wars (the original trilogy, anyway) and her name is Leiah. Yes, after Princess Leia.

What do I win?

Luke does almost turn. His anger almost does him in.

I am honestly expecting that Disney is going to release the original versions of the trilogy, on Blu-Ray, in November, right in time for both the Christmas shopping season, and the release of Episode VII.

I'm not sure if they've even seen it. I thank her brother, who's seven years older, and suggested the name Leiah. Yes, he was a huge Star Wars fan at the time.

Now that makes sense lol. Though I'll point out that Star Wars I'd old enough for someone to love it as a teenager, have a kid, name their kid after a character, and that kid could have grown up and gotten married themselves.

Maybe you're just being stupid.

Edit : But Ghost hayden, and Nooooo are pretty awful.

Okay, you're not stupid, forgive me ><.

The 1997 VHS are acceptable though.

How come there isn't a "My girlfriend doesn't watch Star Wars" support group?

This is a serious issue.

You treat your brother in law like a king.

Nobody really needs to watch any Star Wars ever. The original trilogy WAS a cultural touchstone that helped influence the blockbuster mentality that we still see in Hollywood. Those movies still hold up as fun adventure movies, but they are not necessary viewing at all, unless your a student of film history. Even then, there's got to be at least 200 more important films to watch first.

The movies are old, I just saw them all my senior year of highschool and thought the were okay. Definitely not something I'm make my gf watch. Hell if someone was 12 when the original came out, they'd be 50 right now. Think about that, Star Wars was always a "dad likes it" thing for me, but for kids now it's a "grand dad likes it" thing.
