Why Death Needs To Matter in the Marvel Universe (Cracked)

Yeah, I hope MCU has permanent character deaths or retirements ultimately. It's one thing that their 616 counterparts have always gotten cheated out of: a proper ending to their story. But the MCU versions at least as individual characters might. When the day comes that RDJ is done playing Iron Man, I don't want a recast, I want an ending.

You know what I want for Peter? To see him in high school for a movie, Then see him grow up and continue to be Spider-Man for a decade or so, including being married for the latter half or third of his arc and becoming a father toward the end. Always played by the same actor, aging with him. In the end he doesn't have to die, but maybe loses a leg or something and finally retires with his family. Miles then takes over, (maybe with the occasional Peter cameo) and they keep making Spider Man movies for another decade. And same thing, Miles can age and have a proper story.
And maybe ultimately hand the job over to Mayday Parker :)

Individual characters can this way have their progression and endings, but the MCU as a whole can keep chugging along and evolving.

Does Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 count as one movie or two?

If they didn't loophole his contract for those to count as one, they'll prolly kill steve rogers in part one and pass the mantle to bucky or falcon in part 2.

Bring in the shiny new Spider Man and all his stuff and prolong having to deal with inevitable death drama for a couple movies

It's kind of a blessing in disguise

As far as the movies go, it's not really a problem for me. All action movies do the death fakeout thing. Yeah, it's corny, but action movies in general are corny. As far as the comics go, it's a little bit more of an issue for me. Stakes in general, I mean.

Marvel comics are a universe where pretty much anything can happen, and the major characters are never gone for good. Writers will use their imagination to contrive whatever scenario seems more palatable to the readership. It's been mostly the same exact characters since the 60s, so you have to take comics with a grain of salt. If stakes and hard logic really impact your enjoyment of a universe, you will find limited success.

Me personally, I enjoy comics best when I just take in what's presented at face value. If I start pulling at plot threads it will quickly unravel, so I'm just in it for the cool shit. Works much better that way. I do the same thing for most games and movie stories, too.

On the issue of Loki it was actually foreshadowed, when the guard appears on that dark planet there's a very brief and subtle green flash as the camera pans, the same colour that we see when Loki 'transforms'.

So, yeah. If you were eagle-eyed you knew what was coming. I also don't mind Fury, Groot and Coulson too much but I agree that we need deaths. Just don't kill Rhodey in AoU.

With contracts expiring and Marvel unwilling to pay decent salaries to anyone outside of RDJ there's going to be a lot of major deaths in the MCU over the next few years.

And if they can make Spider-Man the box office king once again then they really don't need RDJ anymore

Loki.. twice
Fury
Groot
Bucky
Coulson
I dunno if I count Coulson as a "fake out." He actually died, was brought back, and had serious repercussions because of it.

I guess I think of "fake out" a little differently.
You're confusing "death" with "change" or "repercussion".

That said, i found it comically bad in Arrow, nobody seems to ever die for real.

No one dies in Arrow for real? Let's see...
Sara
Tommy
Shado
Moira
A good chunk of the antagonists (Brother Blood, the first Vertigo, etc.)
Yup. Sure looks like "no one."

lol yeah that's what I was thinking.

Which makes for an interesting spoiler. If someone leaks info on his contract, we could potentially determine whether he dies in part 1.

Is the rumor that he'll be "in hiding" for part 1 and unites all the heroes in part 2 debunked?

Isn't that what the fans and studios both crave above all else?

I'd prefer something that doesn't make a punchline out of every sacrifice that could actually be meaningful. These films have the chance to transcend the source material and actually have some depth rather than just be a live-action Saturday morning cartoon.

Sure, they're fine as as is, but I think they can be something more.

How many death fakeouts have they actually done? Fury, Loki and...is that it? Actually yeah I had forgotten about Fury until I typed this up, so maybe they should stop doing that. They're both characters for whom it makes total sense to fake their own death, but you can only have so many of those in a media franchise

Onslaught killed a huge chunk of the heroes. THen there were the times with, Aunt May, Aunt May, Aunt May... Peter Parker, Gwen Stacey, Norman Osbourne etc. Thor's also died.

I'd say that chance has passed due to their own success- making too much money as is to pull an upset. Maybe in five years when/if they've burned out their core audiences will we see a little experimentation.

Til that day occurs, I doubt anyone in a suit or marketing is going to piss on the action figure/ cereal box/ 711 commemorative cup cash.

You're right, I'm sure. They're just too successful with the younger crowd and have already established a lighter universe. It just sucks they will kill a character for a dramatic moment in the film only to cheapen it by revealing in the end credits everything is OK. Don't even bother. And we know at least Black Widow is untouchable until they have another female superhero.
