Why Did Street Fighter IV Never Come Out For Wii?

JaseC said:
Here's what would happen:

1) Capcom release the game
2) It bombs (or doesn't perform to expectations)
3) Capcom announce that they're disappointed with the sales
4) Wii owners harp on about it being a shit port

The real Capcom would have made Street Fighter IV: Chop Till You Drop.

Who cares? Buy this game!!!!!!!

Hearing so many gamers say they'd just wait for MVC3 was fucking disheartening.
Shitheads who dont buy it because of the system its on can jump of a cliff.

I bought it twice and I have the other two as well and I am still disappoint.

What disappointed you?
About half a million worldwide (vs. 1,5 M for PS3 SFIV and 1,5 M for X360 SFIV)

Quite good numbers actually...
Ahh, glad to hear that :)

The bigger question is why Crapcom gave the Dreamcast better support than the Wii.

Outside of Zack and Wiki, T v.s. C, and the moneyhatted Monster Hunter Tri they've pretty much released nothing.

Because the Dreamcast wasn't seen as a soccer mom /grandparents kind of system.

Someone should make a looking back at Tatsunoko VS Capcom thread.

Game got a bit of shit for using less buttons but i'm really curious to know what VS fans think of it now that MVC3 is out.

edit: hmmmm, maybe i'l do it

It could have worked on the Wiimote+ Nunchuck, but it would have to be a super casual way of playing the game - not Waggle, but using the No More Heroes control method of raising and lowering the Wiimote to alter one of the buttons' functions (A = weak/medium punch, C = weak/medium kick, B and Z for hard punch and kick, and just press two punch/kick buttons together for Supers or Ultras or whatever rather than three). Of course hardcore gamers would have the classic controller or arcade sticks to use.

But really, I think there was going to be more effort porting it to Wii than there is to other systems with proper shaders and whatnot, and in the time it took to make it work the Wii version would be months too late and sell badly as a result of a delayed release, which in a way is what happened with a lot of Gamecube 3rd party games, didn't it? The 3DS has semi-proper shaders and is a new machine so a port to that makes more sense, and the iPhone works in its own bizarro world where the novelty of Street Fighter on your phone would be enough to sell it... Maybe. I don't know, I'm just making this up as I go along, but it sounds sensible to me.

In all seriousness.

It's out on the iPhone.

It's out on 3DS.

Surely it could have been made for the Wii.

Controls...yes, I know. But there are games on the Wii that require (or at least recommend) the classic controller.
What if Tatsunoko Vs Capcom bombed spectacularly? What if VC sales tracking indicated that the group of fighting game enthusiasts on the platform was miniscule?

Is your source the site that shall not be sourced?

That developers are still playing these "not for this console" games (particularly with Nintendo consoles) when there is at least some market for it and then they make up some bogus excuse like the console can't handle the title screen or something.

I guess the way I combined my statement was a little ambiguous. Probably what I should have said was that I have the other games for PS3 and I'm still disappointed that they didn't come to Wii.

The game is literally unplayable with the stock controller. Better off going for a Marvel port, but even then Capcom wouldn't be able to constantly bend you over for DLC.

It's good that "Capcom" was too busy working on Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop, because that game was developed by Tose. :P

Is there any possibility at all of a TvC2? Or would a "sequel" replacing Tatsunoko with something else be more realistic? Obvious choice would be to replace the Tatsunoko characters with Nintendo ones, while keeping the gameplay the same, and it would surely sell more than any Street Fighter 4 version on Wii ever could. Plus be easier and cheaper to develop.

I really feel like playing TvC again now because of this thread, but not so fun when you've only got a GCN controller for it. I think only choice for getting a stick in Aus is spending over $100 on importing the Mad Catz one.

Why did Metal Gear Solid 4 never come out for 360

Why did Dead Rising never come out for PS3

Etc etc etc

Because it didn't.

They could have made some of those cheap ports of ps2 titles like Alpha Anthologies or anything with Third Strike on it.
I would buy it 3 times.

For people complaining about controls .... they made Capcom vs SNK 2 for the GAMECUBE !

I love the cube controller, but I think it is a worst controller for traditional fighting games then the wiimote

Also ...

The ony downside of TvC, at least for me, was that I never heard about half the roster before.
It helps if you go with the mentality that the Tatsunoko side is all from a new fighting game franchise.

With Tatsunoko vs Capcom remember this was initially an arcade game that was released first in 2008.

The arcade was made using arcade hardware based on the Wii.

My guess is that Capcom thought that the Wii would be the current gaming equivalent of the Dreamcast with plenty of arcade titles. So around 2007 when development began they opted for the Wii.

Oh, ok then. Thought you were disappointed in TVC

Yep. Plus (I think it was Seth from Capcom) said that it's also the reason why the Wii is not going to get Marvel vs Capcom 3: Tatsuoko vs Capcom
He made it sound as if i n the case of te Wii, they were given a choice and since Wii got Tatsunoko, it wasn't going to get the other fighting games.

But hey, this is the same Capcom that was surprised at the visuals that Cavia managed to make out of The Darkside Chronicles, thinking that the Wii was not capable of visuals like that...after time of claiming that the Wii wasn't capable of even rendering the menu of RE5 (or something like that). :p

Capcom probably feels like there is not enough of a core market on the Wii to make it a financially viable endeavor. Can't really blame them though. And comparing the iOS port is dumb. That thing probably took a fraction of the resources that a proper Wii port would take. As for 3DS, I guess Capcom is hoping there is a bigger, more eager potential core audience at the launch of a new platform that will probably sell boatloads than there would be at this point in the Wii's life cycle.

Biggest mistake Capcom ever made was not releasing SF3 on the PSX. However it literally took them 4 years to figure out how to develop a 2D fighter on the PSX's limited RAM when they finally released Street Fighter Alpha 3 for PSX.

I know they wouldn't have been able to fit all of SF3's beautiful animation on there, but seriously, SF3 not coming out on a home console for 7 years (Dreamcast sadly doesn't count) stunted the growth of the fighting genre for years IMO.

Forget about street Fighter. (Shaders and all that..) But what about Soul Calibour and Tekken? Those had PSP versions...

Well, it's always weird like that.
Ubisoft said that Assassin's Creed was not possible on the Wii, but managed to make it for the PSP.

With developers/publishers it's always weird at least when it comes to Nintendo devices. Granted, the Wii may not be a good target for those games; but then again neither was the PSP.

Namco made a Soulcalibur "adventure" game for the Wii that aside being a bad game looked even worse than SCII on GameCube...and they made a port of SCIV for the PSP, with exclusive features, characters and stuff.

Then again, there's always money involved.

To be fair, Assassin's Creed was awful on the PSP. Even as a huge fan of AC I couldn't finish playing it. PoP 2008 would probably have been better suited for that system.

I remember some mod here telling me and others that SFIV was simply impossible to do on the Wii, because the Wii just could not handle the intense graphics SFIV demanded.

And then SSFIV was announced and demo'd on the 3DS, and I laughed.

Because Capcom doesn't believe that there is enough of a return for the investment.

GAF should have learn this by now. It's not because X company hates Y platform. It's, mainly, because they don't see it as a lucrative venture. It's really that simple. Why waste the time working on something, if you're not going to make money from it? They're in business to make money first, not please us. If they make people happy, great....cool, if not, hope the next one is good enough so people buy it. Of course, brand loyalty ain't bad. You have to make your stuff good enough and please enough people so they keep on buying it.

I really didn't care for Street Fighter IV. I played it a few times at a friend's house just for the hell of it but got bored each time. Despite being a solid game, the combat system never clicked with me and I still dislike the art style.

Now if only Mortal Kombat 9 were announced for the Wii.

No chances at the moment.
Mortal Kombat Armageddon made it, on a time were the team and everyone was excited around the whole Wii. The game sold enough to justify and cover the costs of porting it; but not enough as in "holy shit, Mortal kombat is on the Wii" to get them more interested into making Wii versions.

Starting with vs. DC Universe, the team has been using the latest (and a modified) Unreal Engine which is not as easy to port to Wii as earlier versions of the same engine that other companies have ported to Wii. Which was one of the reasons they cited as not being able to get that game (or this one) in the Wii.

Also, Armageddon was able to use the same assets as the PS2/Xbox versions and the engine was already ported to the GameCube for Deadly Alliance/Deception.
