I've been to my fair share of anime/comic/sci-fi cons and have never had an overbearing problem with smell (apart from the occasional person dropping an ill-timed fart)...
Then again, I studied computer science at a large state university - the Indians in the computer lab there, absolutely NASTY stench... someone told me that a lot of Indians don't believe in deodorant? Is that true? Because I could definitely believe it.
Go to a super-crowded nightclub and you'll have a ton of stink, just as much if not more than an anime convention. It's hot, it's sweaty, and people are either wearing horrible cologne, smell of stale cigs, or they just plain reek.
I see a lot of female anime nerds, and some of them are actually attractive... been to EVO and E3 and they were both sausage fests. So anime definitely has the best looking girls out of all the nerd-dom IMO.

Coming from the punk/hardcore scene I can almost live with BO, but when some cro-magnon mouthbreather starts talking to me and i feel like I've been infected with their breath, I want to fucking die. Carry mints if need be, it's just so grody. This was worse at Gamestop because all I could do was move back, I still had to talk to them.

You shouldn't have to use cologne to mask your natural stink - simply bathing is enough. There's a happy medium between the two that few seem to grasp.
