Why do people send game/chat invites to strangers?

You can do it at system level on Xbone, definitely. You can set all your online interactions and stuff just the way you want them. I'm not 100% sure about PS4, it's been ages since I went into the settings there.
Turned on the XB1 as soon you wrote that and yeah, found a way to place that on friends only. Thank you so much. :)

Gonna check out if there's a similar option on PS4 right now.

Years ago after buying Streets of Rage II on the ps3, I played it a couple of times and placed top 5 on one of the leaderboards. I wasn't particularly trying, I just happen to know the game really well as it's one of my all time faves.

After that I got tons of messages from people asking me to play the game with them, taunting me that they'd beaten my score and some even outright accusing me of cheating.
It got so bad I ended up disabling messages for a few weeks until it died down. Years later, I would still get the odd message.

I don't accept random friend requests anymore in games like Overwatch or Battlefield, since from my experience they only care about winning and will jump ship as soon as your group starts losing, even if they're the reason for the loss.

I've noticed people in the Tekken online community are also very friendly. One guy even sent me tips on how to deal with Devil Jin's shenanigans after a ranked match.

It's getting better than it used to be that's for sure

People used to play like it was EVO and they were going to get shot if they lost, now everyone's pretty cool and will gift a round or two if you're clearly outmatched. VF is still the god tho

its called reaching out. ive played online games before where someone reached out to chat and we ended up playing a few games together. i played MGSV and they asked if i played Peace Walker and then told me they have a set up w a few other people where they do co-op missions. i ended up playing a few with a team of people and enjoying this awesome multiplayer experience i never thought i'd get to see. it was pretty cool. i also got to chat w some random person in another country for a few minutes, hear them talk about their day.

I once did it when I was playing with a mix of friends and one random in Gears 4. The random guy was playing well so we invited him and he ended up being a chill dude.

Block everyone and everything! It's the safest option!

The new method of shittalking is to invite people to salty steam groups

I've received random invites while playing Destiny. Most common reason generally was asking for help from other players to assist with either the Nightfall or Raids. If I was playing solo and got invited, I was generally willing to help out. Other times, if I was already in a group, I would just move on.

I've heard of more negative reasons people send random invites, but my experiences have been pretty pleasant so far. This has only happened when playing Destiny.

It's funny how this is considered odd behavior now when it was common practice in the early days of XBL in order to, you know, make friends. There are certainly spammers and the like out there, but there's nothing wrong with attempting to group up with someone you're in game with.

People are talking about cases where you've played a game with these people or otherwise interacted with them, but sometimes you get messaged/friended by people who are just standing around in the same social space as you. That's the weird one.

Wish I could have played online during this era, people seem to remember it quite fondly. Started playing online around 2009 and it's been always a shithole IMO. Sometimes I can't believe the whole "man playing SOCOM with randoms was so cool, doing tactics and shit" and now I play Rainbox Six Siege and get called an n-word just because I don't have all the operators.

The days when randoms knew what to do when it came to objective games. No one fighting over kills and playing smart. The chance of finding someone who liked to talk crap and be generally terrible was really slim.

Last game I was able to enjoy playing with randoms was COD 4.

I made some PS4 friends by adding them after a match in Rocket League and playing a bunch more together from there. I feel bad now tho because I completely jumped ship to PC for everything but exclusives. Dropped my PS+ Sub and everything.

Making friends through online games is a legit thing though. I mean, people meet internet strangers on dating sites and get married these days.

This has only really happened to me in Destiny. No idea why people do that unless it's users that don't understand what the tower is for? Like they think just because they can see me in that local list it's cool to request me?

This has only happened to me in Destiny recently and I think it is because my main was female Hunter. I even had some chase me around and it was a very uncomfortable feeling! Lots of thirsty/lonely people online that just want to chat. Over the last 5 years or so I have met a lot of cool people online though. Borderlands 1 and 2 were huge social games that I met players through.

I've made some lasting, long-time friendships that carried over to real life by being open about someone reaching out. Be vigilant, but I'd embrace random encounters too. You never know who you'll meet.
