Why do people trust their dogs so much?

The amount of likes for this video is frightening. I know I can't be the only one, but why would you ever let a small child near such a massive dog? Ridiculous. I don't care how much you trust the dog, how well it's trained, it can bite the baby's face off in an instant. I guess risking a baby's life is worth a cute Youtube video to some people.

Because the dogs love and trust their owners so much.
Hard not to reciprocate.

I still would not let a child of mine play with a dog quite like that.
Just to be safe, the dog might instinctively go in for a bite - even a play bite might hurt the child.

My dogs are a huge part of my family. I raised them right when they were puppies and that shows in adulthood.

Because people know exactly how their dog will react. I'd trust my dog around any child. If a child hits him he just yelps and runs away. Wouldn't dream of biting anyone or anything out of defense.

You develop bonds with dogs. They are part of your family. You can tell when they need to shit just by the bend of their anus.

My mother grew up around dogs, and we've always had at least two dogs out home. I showed her a similar video and she said she'd never trust a dog near a baby or small child like that. I remember her telling us that when we were young, back in the early 80's, she could take the dog we had back then into the supermarket, leave one of us in the trolley and walk off to get something - and the dog wouldn't let anyone near the trolley.

So, I dunno.

My dog is a valued member of my family. He has earned my trust through years of unconditional love and obedience.

It's difficult not to trust a dog that you come to know and love. They're hard wired to trust us completely.

That being said, that trust should be reserved for the owners. Any dog owner worth their salt will tell you that little children should never be left around any animal unsupervised, especially dogs. Even among well trained dogs there's sometimes some anxiety associated with little kids that can result in bites or other injuries.

No idea.

Man's best friend? I would hope that if I died in my house alone with my best friend that he wouldn't eat my face off prior to being found in couple days. But maybe that's just me...and the incredibly high standards I have for my friends.

Yeah, people are stupid. Just google search "family dog kills child" and face_palm at the hundreds of "he's never done anything like that before" or "he wouldn't hurt a fly. we're heartbroken." comments. All kinds of dogs, all shapes and sizes. EVERYONE is always shocked when THEIR dog does something unexpected because, after all, if they raised it since it was a puppy, that obviously means they know how it's going to react in every situation in every moment of its life. -_-

Dogs are evil.

responsible owners don't. at least not with every breed.

*Waits for people telling me that a beagle is just as dangerous as a staffager*

I'm a dog lover and have had dogs my whole life, but I wouldn't trust big dogs around infants or toddlers. I have a cousin who just had a baby about a month ago. They live in a one room (not one bedroom, one room) apartment with 2 cats and a pitt/rott mix that he's had for a year and has bitten a kid before. They'll go out to smoke and leave this tiny, tiny little baby in the room with this giant ass dog that has a history of biting little kids.

Finally somebody with some sense.

You see these stories way too often. "He's NEVER shown aggression before!". Yeah, until he kills your baby. Sad to see people letting these things happen because of their trust with an animal.

I understand the trust level that an owner has with their dog. However babies like to grab, poke, pull, and just do random things to faces as they explore. No matter how much you trust your dog around you, it may not react the same to having itself poked and troubled by a baby like that.

I wouldn't dare do such a thing, although I deeply know dogs are very social and protective towards members of the family. If you know the dog has accepted the baby, it will no more harm it than it would its own pups.
But then, you never know. I'd let a dog lick the hands of my baby, but while I'm holding him in my lap. Not letting them play on the carpet.

I suspect that once you die and decomposition begins your body starts to smell less like the best friend your dog once knew and more like rotting meat.

Because you can form incredibly tight bonds with dogs, and you can grow to trust them. There are dogs I've had that I would trust in a situation like this and dogs I wouldn't. When you know their temperament it's not really a risky thing to do at all. The dog I currently have would be no problem -- she's the least aggressive dog I've ever seen. She's literally afraid of other puppies. My previous dog, on the other hand, I would wait until the child was older. He was a little dog in a big body, meaning he didn't really know how big he was and liked to be physical with you.

You can say, "why do people trust ________ so much?" because there are instances of parents, siblings, relatives, cops, priests, basically ANY type of entity you're supposed to know and trust doing a bad thing that surprises everyone. But for those of us who don't want to live in constant paranoid fear of the danger lurking around every single corner, this really isn't a big deal.

I don't trust my dog at all.
He doesn't care about me (at all). if I fall or hurt myself he keeps walking/doesn't give a fuck. I'm sure if he could , he would laugh his ass off.

damn dog breed :(

Always been raised with dogs. Always were friendly and never did anything bad. The only time my dog Lady ever bit anyone was my brother was petting her really close and kissing her nose and then like a dick I took my dogs tail and gave it a quick pull, of course Lady was suprised and took a chomp at my brother's nose. We both lauged until I saw blood pouring out of his nose and then we freaked out. I had to try to get my brother's nosebleed under control before my parents came home and find out.

I was a shitty 7 year old :\

Americans have a weird pet obsession that borders on lunacy. These are animals not people.

The bias on this forum is becoming so incredibly insane lately. It is getting really annoying regardless of the thread I'm in someone has to bash America for absolutely zero reason.

Because it's a dog not a jackal?

The amount of shit than can kill a baby is massive. I would imagine the amount that die from choking on Garbanzo beans or get dropped down storm drains far outweighs dog attacks during video filming.

More worrying should be the fact they both left the kid alone to go have a smoke.

Yea...I get that...even though I sure look like that previous best friend who had my face licked every day. My only point is that no matter how much you love and trust a pet (and I love and trust my dog plenty), it is still an animal at the end of the day. Some people are just plain negligent in humanizing their pets far beyond the point of basic safety IMO

Yeah, all those stories of infants dying from garbanzo beans are truly frightening. Much more scarier than dog bites, right?

Dalmations can be nasty bastards. I've interacted with maybe 4 dalmations. 3 were assholes.

I've always viewed Dalmations as the cats of the dog world :p

Pit Bulls though I think get a bad rap. My friend had a fat old one named Josaphine who was the sweetest dog ever. A slobber dog she was, but such a sweet dog.

Dogs seem to be a bit nervous(?) around babies/children. So it really depends. I'd trust my Shiba around babies/kids, but I likely wouldnt trust my Malamute around them. She doesn't bite them from what I've encountered, but she gets too hyper. It also depends on the temperament of the dog and the dog's parents.
