Why does no one talk about how awful the PS4 analog sticks are for FPS games?

As a print graphic designer for 10+ years i can say that i know my stuff.

I have two samsung plasma

One 1080p 51" pn51e530 + ps4 @ 6 feet viewing distance
One 720p 51" pn51d440 + ps4 & 6 feet viewing distance

Both of them are calibrated. There's no difference with old gen console (ps3/x360) but the difference are big with ps4. Most old gen games are 720p and i suspect that console menu are 720p too. On the ps4 you can clearly see the difference in the xmb

Tv resolution is more a matter of distance. A 50" 720p(1.2k) vs a 1080p(2k) 50" will have no difference if you are viewing at 10 feet. You need to carefully check what tv fits you need.

Same thing with 4k(2000p) a 37" seiki 4k with 4k content vs a samsung 37" (720p) will have no difference at 15 feet except that samsung panel will
Blow away the cheap seiki

Yeah I feel they have dropped a bollock with the PlayStation controller once again. It's certainly an improvement over the DS3 but still quite poor overall IMO.

Stick grips, stick position, iffy triggers and abysmal battery life. It really could have been a lot better.

Because Its not awful. Personally.

That last word is key.

It's all subjective and I think controller preference has always been on a personal taste basis.

I HATED the 360 controller. I got used to it and played a ton of Halo 2 on it (and on the old Big Bertha controller for OG box which I hated as well), and held my own very well. But I hated picking up the controller each time.

Flip of the coin, I played shooters MUCH better on the DS3. Not the reg sux-axis but the heavier rumble one. I love my sticks parallel and I prefer R1 and L1 as my primary weapon buttons instead of R2 and L2. It was easy and the best controller.

Now that most games insist you use L2 and R2, I was annoyed at Destiny at first. But after a couple of hours, I'm okay with the buttons and I can finally say that the DS4 is now my favorite controller since I can okay FPS just as well as when I had a DS3.

Some people hate the sticks, but they work wonderfully for me.

Maybe a 3rd party controller will come out that has DS functions and a layout you prefer OP.

Durability aside, and having had a good amount of time with them in Destiny, the analog sticks are anything but awful for FPS. These are at least as comfortable for shooters as the 360 controller was, which was my previous ideal. I disagree with a lot in the original post.

While I can see why some people find the sticks slippery, this
Fine control for aiming is incredibly difficult. I either have the sensitivity low, which means I take forever to turn around. Or I set it high and constantly overshoot my target.
is strictly a PC vs console FPS thing.

I love the controller. That and netflix are about the only things I care about on my PS4 at the moment, so I'm not coming at you with bias here. I played a good bit of Battlefield with it and frankly I think it's the best controller I've used.

My thumbs continuously glide off of the sticks too. I had to get some analog covers to make them bearable. The no-resistance triggers are also garbage compared to what we have on the Xbone and 360 controllers.

The DS4 love on NeoGAF always baffles me. You people are either lying or you haven't actually used the competition's controller for a reasonable length of time.

The DS3 I found the analog sticks to be entirely to loose, so precision aiming was much harder compared to the 360 controller. Now I find the PS4 sticks to be tighter then the Xbox one stick, and prefer the PS4 controls for FPS(Although I still prefer mouse and KB over both).

Can't be worse than the Dual Shocks and people pretended they weren't hot garbage for 3 generations. My mind can't comprehend how people could actually play shooting ones on it.

OP I agree with you on the slippery sticks. I constantly felt my thumb sliding around on the sticks and IMO even felt kind of gross to the touch. It was like this day 1 for me, after a short play session. It's not accumulated grease from my thumbs. However, this problem can easily be fixed by replacing the DS4 sticks with XBO sticks. Really easy mod, just search for the "DS4 sticks might have a problem" thread.

I disagree with your issue on stick tension. I thought they felt really tight and precise by default. The XBO stick mod might actually make them feel looser, but I adapted to it and am having no issues in Destiny with accuracy.

Totally subjective. I love the DS4 for FPS games, the analogs and triggers are fantastic.

Exactly. I find the DS4 to be even better than the Xbox One controller. These things are always personal preference, which is why there are 3rd party controllers for folks who don't like the default controller.

The DS4 is the best controller for first person shooters that I've ever used. The sticks have no deadzone and are much more sensitive and responsive than the DualShock 3's.

Awful OP... really ? making a thread about it ?

I quickly transitioned over to the PS4 for fps from 360 without any problem.

After DS4 when I go back to DS3 it feels like a fisher price toy though.

Sorry the DS4 is a fantastic evolution of Dual Shock and in their own terms and place both the x 360 and xb1 controller are fantastic as well.

I'm not sure if I have that exact issue, but I certainly don't feel as in control using the DS4 playing an FPS as I do an Xbox One controller. I do find the sticks awkward.

The sticks offer no resistance? You're joking right op?

I'm not sure if I have that exact issue, but I certainly don't feel as in control using the DS4 playing an FPS as I do an Xbox One controller. I do find the sticks awkward.

It's because you're used to the asymmetrical layout. I'm used to the DS4 so if I pick up an XB1 controller the layout will seem awkward

I've gotten used to them now, asymmetrical feels weird these days having been using PS4 since launch constantly. DS4 sticks are perfect.

Which has surprised me as I was an Xbro.

I just have no idea how the shape of the sticks was approved during development. I mean, who the hell has a fingertip shaped like a cereal bowl?

That, combined with the thinly lipped triggers, makes it a controller I only use when I have to.

It feels off when I click the left stick to sprint in Destiny. Actually I think besides clicking them in, it's decent for fps.

I did notice my thumbs slipping while playing the alpha, but they felt precise otherwise. The triggers are still uncomfortable to use for me. I'm surprised how much my experience differs from everyone else. Sure, it's subjective, but I agreed with the consensus last gen, that the Xbox triggers were perfect, and that the Xbox 360 controller was superior overall. The triggers feel almost exactly the same on the DS4 compared with the DS3 except that they added a slight curve. The sticks are better, but they sometimes slip like I mentioned, which doesn't happen with the XO controller. Overall though the sticks feel like an improvement on the DS4. But, I'd much rather play shooters on the XO.

Last week though I jumped on an ebay deal for a new PS4 for below retail price, so now I have a chance to play the Battlefield Hardline Beta and Destiny Alpha, and holy crap I'm amazed at how terrible this controller is for FPS games. My thumbs just glide right off the sticks like they're coated in grease, and the sticks provide no resistance compared to the Xbox One controller. Fine control for aiming is incredibly difficult. I either have the sensitivity low, which means I take forever to turn around. Or I set it high and constantly overshoot my target.

That's odd, I actually think the PS4 sticks are better about providing resistance (to the point I'm spoiled and the 360 controller no longer feels as nice due to that) and the xbox one's I've tried are ones that have absolutely no resistance to their thumbsticks (I seriously don't know why more people aren't complaining about that. To me the xbox one's sticks feel so loose it's amazing that they don't fall in the direction of gravity whenever the controller isn't held upright).

No issue with the thumbsticks on the PS4, I actually have more problem with the Xbox One, the ridges make my thumbs raw after a long gaming session.

This. None of my friends had complained about it, but my god they kill me after a few hours of gaming.

I do think its subjective in that the build quality of the DS4 sucks, or at least the initial batch did and the feels of everyones sticks is different especially over time.

I've noticed that the kiosks you'd find at Gamestop use this really soft rubber on the DS4 thats a completely different feel than the actual retail controllers. Its a lot better grip wise but I guess you can't sell a controller without a more "finished" look to it.
