Why does no one talk about how awful the PS4 analog sticks are for FPS games?

I have no idea what you're talking about. Thumbs sliding off sticks? That shouldn't happen, and hasn't happened once when I was playing. Far more responsive than DS3 and much more snappy and accurate.

Idk, I guess it's down to preference but I think DS4 is the best controller right now.

EDIT: How are people bitching about the analog sticks being too loose? DS4 sticks are more resistant than the XB1 controller.

am I the only one that thinks this controller is garbage for FPS games?

You're certainly not alone my friend.

The general rule on GAF seems to be either:

If you have both Xbox One and PS4, you prefer playing FPS with the Xbox One controller.
If you've only got a PS4, then "the thumbsticks are absolutely fine for FPS".

I, like you, found Destiny almost unplayable with the DS4 and was pretty much shot down in flames for even suggesting the idea that the DS4 sucks (in comparison to the XB1 controller).

Are people lubing up their fingers before playing games these days? I have never had a thumb or finger slip off a controller ever.

The grippy rubber has completely been worn out on mine but I still use the controller just fine. Just put your thumb on the stick firmly and don't push or pull in any direction too hard and it won't slip. It becomes muscle memory and you won't even realize that you're trying to not slip.

Still, it's not perfect since you're not always thinking "just put my thumb on the stick firmly and don't push or pull in any direction too hard or it will slip" because, in the heat of the moment, slips may happen.

Also, since we're talking about the DS4 and I didn't want to resurrect another thread, does anybody know what the extention port on the bottom of the controller, next to the audio jack is for?

The analog sticks on PS4 are a huge improvement over the PS3. They're tighter and have less of a dead zone. The funny thing is, the Xbox One controller sticks now feel more like the PS3 which made me play more FPS games on the PS4 instead.

Yup, I'm not sure why anyone could say the One controller is better when it's actually looser than the PS4 sticks.

I think the sensitivity is perfect but I do have an issue with the material the sticks are made out of. They don't really provide much grip so I find myself readjusting my thumbs far too often. But in terms of accuracy and resistance, they are probably perfect.

How the fuck are the sticks worse than the ONE's sticks?

They are worse. I was in the middle of BF4 back in March when I felt my left analog stick rubber pop to the plastic. Now it has started to become mushy and stuck in the l3 position. Xbone controller feels nice and solid like it was made from a single piece of polycarbonate. PS4 feel light, cheap and creeks when gripped.

You've made a terrible mistake...

I agree. The controller is much, much nicer than the DualShock3, but I just don't like the loose sticks so far low. Been a fan of the GC/Duke/OG Xbox slim/Xbox 360 and now Xbox One controllers myself.

But you're going to get a ton of people say that it's all subjective, they love it, the Xbox One controller sucks etc. As for the grips, I used to use them early on for the Xbox 360, though they were Mad Catz Z grip or something. Tons of NHL completely smoothed my launch Xbox 360 sticks and so I needed them. Once they changed up the base of the transforming d-pad sticks, never needed them again.

I think the controller is probably the worst thing about the ps4, from battery life, light bar, triggers, sticks even the TouchPad.
The base is still fine no need to have a break down yet. From E3 when folks first played them, people around the net and GAF have praised the dualshock 4. His title is claiming something is wrong when there isn't thus the "it's subjective" comments. I own two DS4 but I use the 360 controller for my PC and soon will be upgraded to X1. Sony did great work on the DS4 and it shows.

Completely disagree with you OP.

Never had an issue with thumbs falling off the analog sticks. I find the DS4 to be great for FPS and even better than the 360, which I think is the next best controller and previous crown holder.

So you're using an obviously defective controller when comparing the DS4 to the XB1 controller?

My thumbs slip as well. Curious if its my controller or my hand positioning. Never had issues with any controller in the past. 360, PS3 didn't matter. Knew the way to hold them. Especially with PS3 (finger rest).

Yeah, I can't play FPS games competently with the ds4. Maybe it's the grips, maybe it's the symmetry of the sticks, but it feels like the fingers on the analog move when I am trying to press either the l2 or r2 button. In comparison to the xbox one controller where my hand does not travel at all when I press a trigger.

I hold all modern controllers like this:

edit: Also is thumb slippage the new thumbs knock together?

How can anyone possibly say that the thumb on the right is in a better/more natural neutral position than the one on the left? How can you possibly argue that the movement range is going to be as good on the right as starting off from the position on the left?

Looking at that pick, the one on the left looks uncomfortable to move more to the the left.

My thumb used to always cramp up when playing with the 360 controller for too long. Always thought it was stupid and a gimmick to be different from standard controllers.

Then how do you even play FPS with asymmetrical sticks because your right hand must be in a terrible position?

edit: Also the only time someone would be reaching that far (right side picture) with any controller in the past 10 years is with the Duke.

My standard human anatomy allows for a wide range of free movement at the thumb joint, and I am thus able to assume various hand positions and grip a variety of objects with perfect ease and comfort. This asymmetric/symmetric thing is like the biggest non-issue I've ever seen.

Because I'm able to bend my thumb 30 degrees to the right while being completely comfortable. Combine that with the design of the controller and there is literally zero issue with symmetrical analog sticks.

Jesus, this shit reminding me of the fucking banana dude.

Not once did I say you couldn't move your thumb to that position. You can put your thumb in a whole load of different positions - none of which necessarily make a nice neutral position either, though.

So your right hand is not in a "nice neutral position" while using the Xbox controllers for FPS games?

Been answered, but:

Because they're not?
Hey, my opinion is as valid as yours is.

In all honesty, I hated the sticks on DS1 and DS2. The DS3's weren't great, but I prefer the symetrical layout.

I give up. You guys are right. DS4 is the best controller for FPS.

I am not arguing that at all (I think both controller layouts are perfectly great to play FPS games on), I just think the neutral position argument is the dumbest shit ever since your right hand is in the dreaded position that you are arguing against.

Because "neutral" is arbitrary if you don't include the controllers design. On the DS4, the design makes "neutral" with the thumbs hovering over the analog sticks due to the elongated hand grips when compared to the DS3, along with how the hands curve with the controller.

Basically the position on the right is exaggerated, and you need to curve your hand more. The thumb is actually resting more inline with the resting position on the left than the right.

Bingo. The symmetric sticks are so awkward.

People who say that the xbox one sticks are better are wrong.
imo
yes i know that it has a better grip but it is indeed too loose compared to the ds4.

This is not good that everybody should discuss about the problems of the OP which is subjective/something else with his controller only as most will DS4 is very good, so we should stop this thread because it doesn't make sense due to there are no problems with DS4 for almost everyone other than very few people who prefer other controllers due to their preferences.

I found the ds4 sticks slightly slippery after a good while of playing , my hands don't sweat and never had this issue with any other controllers ever. My solution was simply buying on ebay xbox one sticks and just swapping them with the ones on ds4 - best of both worlds.

It could be your controller specifically: I don't know about PS4, but I have 3 PS3 controllers, each with completely different feeling analog sticks. One has almost no grips, one actually starts to bite into my fingers after a while, another has the perfect grip but incosistant button imputs.

The only thing I don't like about the DS4 is the battery life.

I'd agree with this. But today i noticed a big ass tear in the side of the left analog stick rubber on my DS4. Theres definitely some defective shit in these controllers.. but in terms of feel and use, its a great controller imo.

It's obvious isn't it? If no one is talking about it then it's obviously a minority issue. It is a subjective thing and obviously you're in the subjective minority. If you're really bothered I'm sure there is someone out there who manufactures a Xbox 360 type controller for the PS four. Good luck and GG.

Bingo. The symmetric sticks are so awkward.

I've been pressing the spacebar on my laptop's keyboard for the past 2 years with the same hand and thumb positions as what's seen in both pictures. Only when people bring it up as being "awkward" do I see that the second thumb position is not awkward, because I never think about it. They're interchangeable to me because the thumb is opposable, meaning it's able to touch each of the other fingers on its own hand and it's able to move in wide range of motions without being awkward.

I can use both PS style symmetrical sticks, Xbox/GCN style asymmetrical sticks, and Wii U style symmetrical sticks without feeling awkward for the same reason.

If the second picture is really that awkward to you, then I think you've got bigger problems than symmetric sticks.

And trust me, I know awkward thumbs. I've sprained mine a couple of times while wrestling and attempting to get into breakdancing.
