Why doesn't Nintendo leverage their IPs for animation and film?

It's incredibly obvious why. Nintendo, much to the surprise of some, don't enjoy milking their IPs purely for the sake of it. A shitty Zelda movie is going to negatively impact the IP.

Not to mention that most of the characters they have are either purposefully blank canvases or catchphrase shrieking imbeciles.

A Zelda movie couldn't just have silent Link any more. They'd have to create a character for him that would then shape peoples' perception of the character when he's back in game form.

Not really. Since most of the Links are different people, the Link movie would just be another separate Link, and the Links are silent because the player fills in the blanks. For a movie or cartoon, it's up to the director to fill in the blanks.

We somehow didn't put the horribly annoying cartoon Link in later playthroughs of Zelda.

A movie based on any Nintendo IP seems too little gain for a lot of effort and risk. Especially if it was live action. A Metroid live action could work but it they get anything less than the most talented directors, writers etc. they can afford the movie will be abysmal. That and the IP doesn't lend it self to a big blockbuster - it would pretty much be a good Alien movie if done right.

I'd be down for a cartoon series of any of their IP but they again, need to get top talent. If its American made I want Tartakovsky, McCraken, Faust, Weisman, Timm & Dini, etc. If its Japanese made I want BONES, ufotable, Trigger (with a budget of course), MAAPA, Kyoto Animation with someone like Yoh, Watanabe, Hosada, Yuasa (not everyone's cup of tea though :P), etc. at the helm. Get good writers and if it's an action series make sure they can do action choreography! Not to say any of the aforementioned people/studios would be apt for every IP - I just want top talent.

It also has to be a show that while being kid friendly can be enjoyed by adults without wanting them wanting to eat a gun from boredom or disdain (writing is key here). As a grown ass man I may not necessarily be the target demo but I sure do want to be able to enjoy a hypothetical Nintendo show non-ironically.

I'm sure there's a network that they could team up with to air Nintendo shows.

There's Cartoon Network, with a possible Nintendo Nati- no... they would ruin it like they did DC. Though they do air Pokemon so it's still a strong contender.
There's The Hub, which is doing rea- no it's owned by Hasbro and that wouldn't work well.
There's Nickel- no fuck Nickelodeon.
There's Disney... maybe?

Nah fuck Disney too. It's impossible to find out when any of their shows are airing. They might be worse at scheduling than CN and Nick which is an ACCOMPLISHMENT O_O

They really have something with Kid Icarus after Uprising.

A movie/anime of it could be huge.

It's not the most popular of Nintendo IPs I think but they definitely did all the ground work in Uprising. By far the easiest IP they have right now that could transfer into a quality TV program. Star Fox could work as well since VA and well defined personalities aren't alien to the series.

Apparently Mario is going to be in Wreck It Ralph 2, so there's that.

There's going to be a Wreck it Ralph 2? I didn't know that, great to hear :)

Source though?

Well, one of the last thing Yamauchi wanted to do as president of Nintendo was to establish a 3d animation studio.

Too bad Iwata canceled the entire project.

Well they have clearly stated they want to use their characters in more things than just games. The Amiibo figurines are one example of that, I wouldn't be surprised to see some animations/movies coming out in the future.

I would die over a Metroid movie. It would make such an amazing movie if done right (swerve Other M writers), make it an atmospheric horror movie as others mentioned before. How great it could be.

I get less excited thinking of a Zelda movie, just because it would be very difficult to get that right. It would have to be live-action, together with good CGI. If they can only find a good Link actor, it would already print money on buzz alone. To make the movie as epic as it needs to be, woah, that is a huge challenge.

I wouldn't mind a Sentai style Wonderful 101 series. All with that Monter of the week format.
I'm sure people thought the same about Viewtiful Joe and then the ainme happened.

As for W101. Given there are over 100 characters, it might suffer from an extreme version of F-Zero GP legend syndrome of we need all 30 drivers+more made for the show (Rick Wheeler, his brainwashed girlfriend, Samurai Goroh's Wife etc...) to each get the spotlight (generally meaning an episode). Plus imagine finding 100+ voice actors.

I used to think that Nintendo was right to not want make movies out of their stuff anymore, but then Marvel happened.

What one man can do, another can do.

...Not that it's likely, given that Marvel had years of mucking around in Hollywood gradually building up connections and eventually recruiting a movie tsar of unquestionable talent like Kevin Feige who built a production machine that somehow manages to ensure both quantity AND (relative) quality....

But y'know, it just shows that such a thing is possible. Nintendo could probably do it if they felt like investing a lot of time and effort. Which I don't think they do.

p.s. best videogame adaptation is the Sengoku Basara anime

There's a decent amount of Nintendo Manga out there.

An anime series for Fire Emblem Awakening would make sense.....

I would love 11 minute short cartoons about the characters from Splatoon!

But it's pricey.

For those kind of wondering how a modern Fire Emblem anime would be should check out Gonzo Digimations "Romeo X Juliet." Even though it's very loosely based on the classic play.. it takes place on a weird floating island with character designs and flying horses ala Fire Emblem. Seriously. Here's the English dub trailer from Funimation. There's some weird Bows/Axes/Swords stuff going on in it later. Also,
the main heroine wears a mask to hide her identity ala Lucina.
But yeah. It sates my demand for a modern Fire Emblem anime until one eventually gets made. The show feels like it would have breakdowns where you control the characters in an SRPG and the music is from one of the people behind the music in Final Fantasy XII. Funimation has the whole series up subbed, LEGAL, and free., so it's worth seeing. (
Just be warned that "You Raise Me Up" is used a lot. Also, seriously. Within 2 minutes of starting, we've got young Juliet being saved by a bad ass Pegasus Knight from Fire Emblem. Yeah..
)

I want TV animation... I don't think some of Nintendo's franchises lend themselves well to movies....

I would love a modern Legend of Zelda anime.

Or a Dillon's Rolling Western series.....

Why not start with short movies tied with big releases? Presto from Wall-E is a really good and light hearted cartoon, and without one line of dialogue.

Or a web based Kids Icarus anime? All characters already have voices and the Palutena reveal caused a lot of buzz on the internet, studios wild fight for it.

we need more of this

God damn I loved that cartoon.

Well it could be like the game where there is a core team that team up with various people each week, and can re-use voices for them as well. People can put on accents!

Because no one hears "Excuuuuuse me, Princess!" and thinks "Yeah! We need more of that!"

Crazy talk, that show was loved back in the day and still is by those who watched it. Newer Zelda fans are always trying to revise history to match their tastes in what Zelda was and should be. The Link's Adventure smack talk on the internet is another great example of this, bunch of people letting their own feelings cloud their view and convinced themselves that LOZ 2 wasn't well received.

When was the last time you saw a good video game movie
All the Resident Evil movies are better than the games have been since 4 and not even using a qualifier one of the best movie franchises of the last decade.

They really do need to do things like that to increase revenue streams.

Cartoons, comics, more toys.

Some mobile games, not ports but things like a candy crush type game with Nintendo characters. Things that don't devalue their full games but create new revenue streams.

Not many of Nintendo IP lend themselves well on the big screen and Nintendo would have strict requirement to how they want their characters to be portrayed.

I mean how can you have a Zelda movie when Link doesn't even talk in the game?

Wreck it ralph

Doesn't count as Ralph isn't a Video game character.

It's not like there isn't studio interest:

Yeah no, that was crap and it was a good thing Nintendo shot it down as their other movie adaptation were terrible.

Well considering how going into movie nearly killed Square, that was probably was good idea.

That's what they are doing with QoL and Amiibo.

I know. But with their diminished console base and rapidly shrinking printable market they need more than just QoL and amibo.

QoL is a huge gamble as the fitness gadget market is already huge, and won't be easy to break into. And a lot of people have Wii Fit balance boards gathering dust with their other fitness fad impulse buys, while the people who truly care about fitness have gym memberships, yoga classes, running routines etc.

Do you really want more of this?

No one's asking for that kind of movie.

That being said, in this day and age(and not being SMB related), I'd kill for more off-beat fantasy/sci-fi movies like you seen from the mid-80s through the mid-90s. Movies like Stay Tuned, Meet the Hollowheads, Little Monsters, Mom and Dad Save the World, the Bill & Ted movies and such. Hell, Tim Burton's stuff from that era was ripe with that flavor(not anymore, though). I'd classify Super Mario Bros: The Movie as a flick that fell into that category of "off-beat science ficition/fantasy". Those are dead now. Everybody's got a hard-on for realism.

Why doesn't everyone whore out their creations killing most of the inherent magic to make more money or gain more exposure?

They probably voted against it in a board meeting. I think Nintendo has a really solid hold on their vision, where other companies are much more flexible yet much more fragile

Disney need to buy Nintendo like they bought Marvel.

I wanna see F-Zero rollercoasters at Disneyland and Pixar movies of Nintendo characters, and Nintendo quality Disney games for that matter.

No no and hell to the no.

Their games are gameplay focused and not narrative focused. Animation and film don't match up with the actual strengths of Nintendo's brands.

...is what I'd like to say. But Pokemon absolutely blows anything like that out of relevancy. Honestly, Nintendo is showing signs of flirting with animation and film. Pokemon TV will always be a thing, but they also did some Kirby and Kid Icarus animations, and I'm sure they have metrics attached to those to judge whether or not it would be feasible to launch a series.

I would love to watch a Toad or Yoshi movie with the SM3DW artstyle and Pixar quality, but it should be at least as fun as Wreck-it Ralph or the Lego movie...
Maybe a Rosalina movie to explain her origins for those that missed the Galaxy games...
Or just a movie about Bowser and the Koopa Kids

In what universe is MM basically Donnie Darko

X days till the end of the world, time travel, the bunny/skull kid, but it is kinda stretching it...
