Why don't people like The Crew?

Big world filled with nothing really worthwile - felt lifeless
Some really weird choices with MP part of game
Singleplayer is lackluster
Even SP requires online even though the MP part is done much worse than TDU games and boh of those workded fine offline

At least it makes for good gifs

I only tried this game once during pax like 2 years ago or something and in that early build, I was passing through entire buildings and other environment objects. Still seems to be the case here?

Ehh, I've enjoyed the game immensely so far. It's a goofy game.

Well in this case he's not going through a building.....look carefully.

No, it's a gif of someone getting incredibly lucky and spinning between two buses.

It's a suck. Bad suck. Ubi suck.

Bad story, bad gameplay, bad game. Well, it's a mediocre car game, but yeah, Watch Dogs is a mediocre GTA clone as well.

You guys talk about this game like you talked about FUEL back in the day. But this one isn't bad - it's just average. FUEL was bad and had a gigantic world with nearly no traffic, no cities, etc, etc, etc. The world in this game is much more interesting. There's towns, quarries, mountains, so much to see. The driving is average but no where near as bad as FUEL.

And I could go on forever. The Crew is a great step up from FUEL, but so is Forza Horizon 2 from The Crew.

As with TDU1, TDU2 and The Crew, there's a huge potential within this series. If for once it's execution is done as well as FH2, we'd have a huge hit in our hands.

I was really excited about The Crew before it was released but after reading so many negative reviews, I decided to hold off on getting it. I’m a huge open world racing fan and almost got it during the last Xbox sale but I think I’ll keep waiting until the large update / expansion in November.

Open world and racing games don't mix.

Forza Horizon 2 would like a word with you.

I'll admit, I haven't really played the game past playing the demo at Fan Expo, and I must say, if they didn't fix the handling (which considering what I've heard from reviews and this thread, they didn't) I can see why people hate it.

From the demo, which had free-roam, and seemed to be a nearly complete version of the game, I found the handling awful. The controls felt way to slippery, and the way the game was designed (at least in the city I was in, Miami), it was nearly impossible to get to high speeds and not crash into something because of the awful handling. The handling felt especially bad since I had been playing the first Forza Horizon a few days before, and the two games are truly night and day when it comes to how the cars handle, and how good racing feels.

It was an always-online game built around the team aspect that made it really difficult to get together with someone so you always played alone... I shouldn't have to send invites, it should be like LittleBigPlanet 3 where it drops me together with people doing the same mission.

Most people criticizing the handling are ignoring the fact as you upgrade your car you can upgrade the handling.
It becomes more arcadey and easier to handle than the two Horizon games, it's more like a NFS game.

The reason most of us are ignoring that is because we didn't continue playing something that wasn't fun for hours on end, under the promise that it would maybe, possibly be more fun later. Instead we just decided to spend that time playing something that was fun all along.

Coincidentally it's 50% off on Steam.
Game had potential, but then they had to go and spoil it all with always online microtransactiongrinding. And also the physics and whatnot apparently wasn't the best.

€15 seems like a fair price to me though, so I'll be getting it. I'm still intrigued by the thought of just cruising around its sizable world and the kind of bonkers notion of it containing actual race tracks. Hopefully they won't shut down the servers just yet. I'm required 30 days notion by law, so I ought to get that at least.

Sorry for the bump, but better than a new thread, right?

So is this game "finished"? Or has it actually turned out to be financially successful to some degree?

I ask, because now that this game has happened, would there ever be a chance that we could some day get one of the following?:

- "Burnout Online"
- "Need For Speed Online"
- "Forza Online"

Each concept being an MMO Racer, same as The Crew.

They would pretty much need to do the same thing that The Crew did with the world map however... a complete USA to drive across. I could see Forza using a European setting perhaps? The others felt grounded in America, IIRC.

Perhaps one of these games could right the wrongs of The Crew? Something tells me they'll wait 5-10 years and do it Next Gen though... if anything. But I do feel that current consoles could totally pull this off.

Nobody posted the OT yet? It was a classic.

From a historical perspective it's slightly annoying that the OP made the effort to update it once it became the OT, it was originally just the first line, but I appreciate making the effort for those that were actually interested.

Yikes! If how that thread ended is any indication of how the game did... brutal...

I have the chance to get this for PC for 10$

Should I?

...[crickets]...

Play it, you'll know why.

This.

I remember being super excited for it before it came out, since I'm generally a fan of huge open worlds. Playing it though, the handling was definitely pretty terrible and I mostly agree that putting in AC style objectives in a racing game didn't really work.

Sounds like what really did this game in was the "low level handling"... people don't expect to need to "level up" their driving skill to be able to drive a car better. :/ If they would have done this differently, I suspect the game could have survived.

That actually existed, called Need for Speed World, but it was taken offline July 14th this year, along with a bunch of other EA F2P titles.

Wow! F2P feels like a good fit for this genre too... oh well.

Sounds like this is simply something nobody wants...
