Why don't we all just rent Ground Zeroes?

That's my plan. Gamefly, baby! But if I like it, and there's enough replay value and side content to do, I'll pay to keep it. Everyone wins!

That's exactly what I'm doing. Not only because I'm waiting on a PC version but because I enjoy the time limit a rental puts on a single player campaign. It made The Last of Us way more intense (even though I made sure to stop and smell the roses when I could in that game) and I probably wouldn't have finished Beyond: Two Souls if I felt I could stop and trudge through the rest of that crap later.

80% that's crazy good. even here. GameStop, at best you can get back like maybe $40 out of $60 that you payed for. And that's store credits.

I've never done it, but I think it depends on the place and how close to release date you sell it. 65-70% would be more the norm.

First off, rental places around me are either long gone or only carry a few popular mainstream games. Second, something like MGS:FZ, I can see myself playing it multiple times and cherishing it forever since I love MGS. I rather own it.

If there isn't much replay value, sales outside of the initial window will get crushed by used copies anyway. This could end up being a one time experiment.

What's the goal here? Are we trying to send a message to Kojima & co? I won't be buying it on release personally.

Dunno if there is a goal really, besides discussing renting vs buying for people who want to play this somewhat unique release.

I guess I could've couched this in some big message about not supporting the selling of what might be a glorified demo disc for 30 dollars. But that didn't really seem necessary and I don't even know if that is what I think about it. In retrospect I might've titled the thread "Is Ground Zeroes the most rentable game?"

Why don't we rent everything?

A reasonable approach for a lot of stuff, honestly.

Its a metal gear solid game/demo/prologue dude, im gonna replay it on every difficulty and back until phantom pain on ps4., obviously im not the one and done type.

I was gonna agree with the op until I realized that I would totally spend $30 on a glorified demo for the next Mass Effect game. So, yeah, spend your money how you see fit.

The last MGS solid console game came out in 2008. Its been 6 years since then, I will gladly spend 30+ dollars to experience and own this rare gem.

My name is JonnyBigBoss. I own four different versions of Metal Gear Solid 3. Do you really think I'm going to rent a Metal Gear game?

Psh.

I even bought The Document of MGS2 for 20 or 30 bucks and definitely got my moneys worth. Needless to say I am a sucker for Metal Gear and will buy Ground Zeros.

Why don't we rent everything?
Certain games, I'll play time and and time again. I play through Battlefield Bad Company and Driver San Francisco about once a year. There's also something to be said for having a collection of games you can go back to during times of drought.

I am normally against buying used games or renting games at Redbox, but I will for this. The whole thing reeks of Konami nickle and diming a fanbase they know will pay anything for more MGS. I'm treating it as a tryout for TPP. If I like GZ, I'll buy TPP.

I don't have my PS4, not going to buy an Xbox One for at least another couple of months (rather get my rig parts ordered and assembled first, can play Titanfall there), and refuse to play it on 360 only to have to play the current gen later.

Oh...well, I guess my not renting or buying outright would be seen even better by some.

I don't know, I'll probably buy it when I do get my PS4 sent out here and get enough impressions from GAF. I do think that all the content all together will be worth $30 if there's enough replayability and side content to hold up the story. Also I'm a really curious player, so the main mission(s) will take me longer than probably the average person.

Give me good impressions fellow GAFfers!

Btw, the price lowered to $30 for both retail and digital for current gen, $20 for last gen digital ($30 retail). Why are people still saying $40.00? I would think people who care so much over this would at least keep themselves in the loop.

Because they know not enough gamers care enough to make a statement.

Nothing will change OP, but props for sticking to your guns.

Thanks for supporting the industry.
Hey I'm buying Watch Dogs.

It's not just a question of how short it is, but of how much they're asking. At $20 I'd have bought this game outright, but for $40 (now $30? I think) I'm just not sure about the value proposition of this game.

We don't know what the game is like yet. We know how long it takes to beat the main scenario (roughly), granted. We don't know much about its replay value yet. We can still choose to pay the cheapest option (digital last-gen edition I believe), should that meet your length to cost ratio requirements. The "why don't we all" bit of the title is bugging me. Different games have different respective value to each gamer. GAF is not a hivemind (something we constantly get falsely stereotyped as from the outside).

Yes, it's $30 for retail/digital for current gen and retail last gen, while $20 digital last gen.

It's going to just have to be a wait and see game as to how much content and replayability there actually is.

A bit of a mic drop from me there, heh.

But seriously, I'd have paid full price for the MGS2 Tanker - GZ looks to be a little larger than that and obviously of a higher quality, although I'm seriously doubting it has the same attention to detail that the tanker did. I'm seeing my purchase as a "vote" of sorts for The Phantom Pain.

For next gen people, are there so many games out there right now that rentals are a requirement?

Edit: I'd pay double if I could choose David Hayter VO

Also, great, I'll invade your game some time >:D

If enough people don't buy video games new, there will no longer be a video game industry.

So we should just buy everything that comes out regardless of value proposition to make sure the industry is okay?

That said, For everyone saying that you're going to play it over on all the difficulties and whatnot it sounds like you'll get plenty of value out of it. So thats cool that you're buying it.

Also, part of my hesitation for this game is that I've never played a MGS game before! Other than the demo of MGS 15+ years ago. =0

Not to get off topic but in #watch_dogs do you have to be on someone's friends list to invade their game?

i wouldnt go near this if id never played MG before. youre just going to spoil a ton of info for yourself. just get the Legacy collection and be done and get GZ when youre done.

If its available, I'll be renting it. If not, I'll pick it up right before Phantom Pain drops.

or I'll probably break like normal and buy it day 1

Nope. I was commenting on the silliness of the "Why don't we just all rent?" claim. It's just fundamentally unsustainable.

Yeah, I get it. We're consumers and we want games that communicate an effective value proposition. We want consumer's rights. Stuff like that.

But if developers can't make enough return for their short, single-player game, they might decide to turn to other, alternative methods of monetization instead. Like...tacked-on multiplayer to increase "value proposition," day-one DLC so rented copies won't have the full experience, free-to-play games with ads and micro-transactions, etc.

I dunno, it seems very detached from the now convoluted lore - if anything it seems as though this will be a requirement for The Phantom Pain. From that Twitch stream earlier this evening it seemed very light on narrative.

I'm not sure, sorry :o

Not everyone has a Redbox or Gamefly available to them.

I don't even know if UK services like Lovefilm would carry it, tbh.

This, I'd totally be down with renting some of these newer games...though honestly my backlog of games I own is probably long enough across all platforms that it kind of negates the purpose in renting for me. Bah.
