Why have we started calling Racial Nationalists 'alt right'?

I mean the far right has been a common phrase for a long time now but am only recently hearing this 'alt' term. Isn't this toning it down and acting like its normal? Isn't the 'alt' right just fascist, nationalistic and far right?

I mean communist are not 'alt' left. Its far left; its been around for a while now. Its not somehow 'alternative' to the centre left - it fundamentally disagrees with the centre left. The centre right and right should fundamentally disagree with fascism.

Whats alternative here? Why is there a new name to something so old? I really don't get why I hear this mostly from the left? Is it because people are afraid to get in a fight about how some of these people are just rather plainly - facists and or racists?

It's alternative as in, showing outward racism is an alternative to the disguised racism of the general Republican party.

I don't know, but we need to stop. Let's not go along with their attempt at a hip rebranding. Let's call them for what they are: racist white supremacists and white nationalists.

'We' haven't, they're the ones that went out of their way to create a brand to avoid anyone else creating it for them.

It's the name they've chosen for themselves so that they won't get labeled as "far right". Same shit, different name.

Yup:

Serious answer:

Used during the campaign to lump together a large group of people who are (probably) not super racist with those that are, in an attempt to marginalize the views of the "diet" racists.

What actually is happening: makes the radical, super racist views more normalized.
