Refreshing to see a positive thread among all the (justified) E3 vitrol, Wii U has many flaws, but for someone that is new to Nintendo or has not played anything from them before Wii, is a nice system.
Oh ok haha. What would you recommend I play next?
Yup, that's what I'm thinking as well. But so many PS4 games to play first (and Splatoon), then I'll go back to Wii U.
I'll be honest. Not a fan of fighting games like this. So I even don't buy street fighter or Mortal Kombat.
Cheers.
This is going to sound like a dumb question but how do I download it on Wii U?

You only need one word, OP.
Splatoon
I will give you credit for a lengthy, well thought out post.
But, as a former wii u owner, I just can't recommend it.
The exclusives are good, but with weak hardware, dead third party support, and the nx on the horizon, it is a bad purchase now, unless you can get a great deal.
Via the E-Shop but the 3DS version is a lot easier on the eyes with the updated graphics and framerate, the N64 version runs at 20 orso fps.
Check your downloads with the home button and then download manager(blue icon bottom left)
A good 2D Zelda to start with is A Link To The Past on SNES which can also be purchased for Wii U VC.
I hate traditional fighting games, but love Smash. It really does a lot to cater to every skill level, such that you don't feel like you straight up can't play if you don't play on a high level.
In fact you can go ten years fighting your buddies and no one else, and think you're amazing, when really don't even have the slightest clue how to actually be good.
Welcome to Nintendo Online world. And I have bad news to tell you.
edit: If you asking about Twilight Princess that is.

Uh, Ocarina isn't on the Wii U eshop. You have to get it through the Wii shop if you want to play it on the console. There's only 3 N64 games on the Wii U currently.
my personal bests so far
I see what you're saying. But I dunno. Every time I play a fighting game I just don't get into it. Is there a demo I can try out?
Haha, don't worry. I used it to download wind waker HD and realised how crap and slow the shop is haha.
Yeh this is something that confuses me as I know there is multiple places to download games and as I haven't really looked in to the virtual console stuff before I'm not sure where to go for each game. Is there a list somewhere?
I don't see Hyrule Warriors on that list..........

I wouldn't call Wind Waker the best one. The best can be played on 3ds but hopefully Wii U will get Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword on Wii vc which are decent.Oh ok haha. What would you recommend I play next?
Got some bad news for ya
i'm holding out for a price cut still. just can't justify paying over $200 for that hardware in 2015.
The bad news was that Wii game downloadable library is extremely limited. Super Mario Galaxy becoming downloadable was considered huge for goodness sake
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_games_for_Wii_(North_America) has all the Wii Virtual Console games. They can all be bought on Wii U if you switch it into the backwards compatibility OS and use the old shop inside there. Keep in mind it's a different shop with a separate wallet and uses Wii Points instead of real money (you can still use a credit card but have to use it to buy Points instead of buying games directly).
Also you will need a Wii Remote and Wii Classic Controller or Wii Classic Controller Pro to play them. The Backwards compatibility doesn't support the Wii U Gamepad or Wii U Pro Controller (confused yet? Thanks Nintendo...)

Since this is your first Nintendo console I highly recommend to play Metroid Prime Trilogy & Super Mario Galaxy 2 on virtual console. You just need a Remote & nunchuck
Zhuge EX the only thing i'll tell you is to avoid Warriors orochi 3 hyper like the plague.... it runs like shit, makes you wonder how they got HW to ever run well (plus i know you have WO3 Ultimate on a more recent console)
That's surprising that the Wii U is your first console as I thought you would have had either a Wii or a 3DS due to the exclusive Samurai Warrior games on it. But I suppose it wasn't enough to buy those consoles for you. I do recommend a 3DS though, if you don't mind handheld gaming with mediocre graphics, simply because it has access to all but a handful of past Legend of Zelda games. If you want to just keep with the Wii U for now though, I HIGHLY recommend trying out Pikmin 3. It's got a demo, so you don't have it buy it if it's not for you. Also Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a fantastic platformer, should you want to play another. In fact, the Wii U is pretty much the place to go for platformers. Mario, DK, Kirby, Yoshi, Splatoon single player.
Also, I really enjoyed the OP. It's interesting seeing what an experienced gamer's first introduction to Mario and other classic Nintendo properties are.
Haha, don't worry. I have PS4 and PS3 for all musou games like that. Only musou game I bought a Wii U for was Hyrule Warriors.
When the Wii came out I wasn't in a position to buy the console myself and quite honestly, even when I did have the cash, SW3Z came out on PS3 and so I got myself a copy of that. Never really been a huge handheld gamer tbh so the 3DS version of SW Chronicles didn't convince me. But the multiple musou games on PS Vita did.
What convinced me to get a Wii U was Hyrule Warriors and also Nintendo's games actually looked fun to play.

I see. I hope the KT-Nintendo relationship furthers into giving more Musou games on their consoles, because I do love me some Musou. Or make another Pokemon Conquest game. But anyway, Nintendo's first party stuff is almost always great because they're just fun, pure and simple. Also, I do believe Super Smash Bros has a demo on the Wii U, so you should be able to try it out first.
I'm interested in Galaxy series, not looked in to Metroid before but I'll check it out.
Thanks.
Happy you're enjoying OP.
I wouldn't bother even if they were free.
