Why is Gaf so obsessed with amibo's?

Way too many Nintendo fans on gaf , probably something they'd wanna collect being hardcore fans. Personally I don't see the appeal.

is there a "platform fan cap" here on gaf? i didnt see in that part in the FAQ. my god, some people on here...that idontlikethingok.jpg fits perfectly here.

It's spelled "Amiibo"

In general, I've noticed that Thread OPs that don't really like something or some game, tend to misspell the thing they're talking about. Or say the wrong version.

I've wondered if it's always a mistake, or something done on purpose to highlight how flippant they are about it. Like, "I made the thread, but I still don't care about it".

I also didn't say anyone sucked for liking Amiibos, or even anything near that aggressive or insulting. But you're blind if you think that a huge factor in the popularity of these toys isn't people who are huge Nintendo fans looking to buy them because they're Nintendo characters. I've seen multiple people in these Amiibo threads say things like "They're not the best figures, but where else am I going to get a Sheik figure?"

That's essentially saying "Yeah, I know it's not the greatest quality product, but since that's all Nintendo is giving me, I've got to get it."

My remarks about the abuse of the term fanboy are general and not directed at any personal insults you may, or may not have, leveled against someone.

But the way you're framing the subject comes across as: if you buy something because you like it... you're a fanboy. That's where this reasoning ends. And often, it is treated as if it has some special significance. As if the fact that people are motivated because they're fans of something means more than it does.

Exactly how is it significant if someone stands in line for the iPhone 6 or for some toy? A great deal is commonly made about this sort of thing, and people usually cherry pick the craziest story as if to insinuate that somehow, somewhere, something has gone too far. Are we supposed to do something about it? Are we really that concerned with what other people do because they want something?

To me it's incredibly straightforward: they're collectable Nintendo figures. I love Nintendo and their characters, I love collecting figures I like: therefore: amiibo's.

The amiibo craze is just not a GAF thing. Sure, this is a video game forum and the talk about amiibo's will be more intense but people are going crazy over these outside of GAF.

It is like any other toy/collection craze that has popped up over the years.

I don't own any but for those who are into it I see no problem.

It's a combination of things. For one, they are decently well made figures for $12, so it's in the impulse buy territory. Plus, GAF has a lot of Nintendo fans on it. Lastly, once you buy on figure that is a character you really love (Samus), then it becomes easier to buy a second or third one.

Amiibos have most of the same qualities as Skylanders or Disney Infinity. The main thing it's lacking is a game designed specifically for them. The added functionality is neat, but it isn't going to drive sales as much as a decent game that requires them would.

No, I think that there is a section of people who are collecting Amiibos that are doing so because they're heavily invested in Nintendo products and will buy whatever Nintendo puts out. They're the same type of people who go into other Nintendo threads and pretend like some of the poor decisions Nintendo make are perfectly fine.

Also, Apple is probably not the best group of people to compare to for this conversation. They're one of the most dedicated fanbases and one of the quickest to defend their product of choice. There are plenty of annoying Apple fanboys out there who don't shut up about how great Apple is.

You don't have to do anything about it, I'm certainly not implying you should, and I'm not trying to change anything. What other people do with their money is their business. But it is helpful to know that when you're reading the impressions of something, that those impressions might be biased. It's more about understanding that other people aren't always logical when it comes to their opinions, not getting people to stop liking what they like.

No Amen, if you're a Nintendo fan and dismiss Amiibos you have to hand in your Nintendo fancard. I had to do the same thing with my own apparently, they sent a letter in the mail. Was kind of depressing.

Shit, I'm a Nintendo fan but I haven't bought nor collected a single amiibo because I don't care about them. Don't know if that's a good thing or not.

This is why it's incredibly bizarre to me that people are in here saying, " some people only collecting Amiibo because they are Nintendo fanboys" as if it's some scathing, insightful calling-out. Of course some people are buying the things because they really freaking love Nintendo games. It's stating the obvious. It is even more nonsensical than most software related usage of the term fanboy.

If you like something enough to spend money on it, you're inherently a sucker?

I don't think being a fanboy means you're a sucker. It just means that they might enjoy the offerings from a certain company more then other people would and their opinion may be colored as such. I also think it means you're willing to give a company more leeway for their missteps more then the average consumer. That's the kind of thing that should be taken into account when reading other peoples impressions of things.

I bet GAF was crazy for

haha man I still have all of that

plus some Animal Crossing and SMB 3 cards

You're either born with the collector gene or you're not. Every time I'm at a friend's house and it is full of relatively useless dust-gathering objects that they never use, probably will never use, and have to box up and transport every time they move I'm happy I don't have the collector gene.

I think Tyler Durden was on the right track when it comes to possessions.

I think it's because some people don't know there are better figurine options then Nintendo's amiibo. There are pvc figurine companies that sell much higher quality crafts like Good Smile Company and their nendoroid line:

Honestly I think there are a lot of Nintendo fans on GAF, and these are cool looking figures.

I got caught up in it, but after buying 2 I am fucking done.
Ended up importing an Ike and Shulk from Japan, felt stupid for doing it, and now have decided that amiibos are not for me.
I'll be damned if I'm going to put up with NoA's shit anymore just to get some glorified DLC.
Probably the worst 60.00 I have spent in 2015.

I don't really understand it either. I have a Link, Zelda, Peach and Rosalina and they're kind of neat to look at...but remarkably useless as far as in-game content goes, even for Link who gives a Hyrule Warriors weapon.

I feel like a sucker for even buying those four.

First of all, as pointed out, it's not just here as they are selling like hotcakes.

Second and more importantly, they are figures officially made by Nintendo(how often does that happen for the mass market???) and despite the terrible console sales, Nintendo fans and fanatics are still out there in strong numbers.

Add the rarity and scarcity and boom, it's a hot hyped product.

I don't understand why people like them, but I don't care that they buy them, either. I actually compare it pretty similar... scratch that... loose similarities to people who like the my little pony show, even though they're not the target audience. I don't get it, I think it's weird, but, ultimately, I don't care.

Yeah but did you check the price tag? Amiibos are First 4 figures for poor people

I generally think plastic figurines are pretty dumb, and the way they're being used for games is pretty bland, albeit, not offensive like I feared. However...

The amiibos are pretty nice. They're mostly well built, relatively small, and are a nice little piece of nerd art to display. I own 4 of them, and probably won't own more than that, but both my wife and I just think they're a fun little display to have on the entertainment center. I didn't expect I would like them, but I received one as a gift, and stood corrected.

They don't have FZero, Punch Out, Earthbound,Game and Watch, Wii Fit, Robb figures do they

See, Nendoroids don't appeal to me at all. They're nice, but I just have no interest in them. Just not a big fan of the aesthetic and the price point.

Perhaps part of the appeal in the Smash amiibo line is that they're Smash 'toys' and it ties in to my nostalgia for Smash 64.

I would guess because 1. They're cheap figures with small purposes in some video games 2. They are fan favorites of characters that rarely get merchandise and 3. They became hard to find, which instills a sense of urgency and draws in more and more people.

I followed some of the huge amiibo threads for a while out of curiosity. Getting the figures you want is almost a game in itself. I think people get addicted to that aspect of it.

I'm thinking because the US doesn't get much Nintendo merchandise. In Japan, every other week there's a new figure, gashapon set or plush line. Though is true that it's mainly Mario, with some Kirby sprinkled in. Zelda/Metroid/Pikmin/etc stuff is not that common.

Hideous.

You're on a video game forum and you're questioning why the userbase has great fondness for nerdy stuff? Come on man.

I'm a big Nendoroid fan. Have 100+, but that one is ugly. I'm only getting it to complete the set.

Here are some better ones:

Most don't even have Peach =P
that's my point amiibo are a hit with Nintendo fans because it's the only way to get a collectable figure of some obscure ip's like Earthbound and Captain Falcon I say thay should expand the roster give us assist trophy amiibo's like Takamaru plz
