Why is (insert videogame company name) so awesome?

Capcom: What they did this gen was simply fuckawesome. They put out so much quality stuff, it's insane! Many titles were even totally new franchises and some existing ones got completely revamped, so it's not like they simply milked all their stuff to drought. Sure, there were some definite stinkers in between (most recently Final Fight: Streetwise and Beatdown: Fists of Vengeance), but all in all, Capcom was probably the best developer of all this gen.

Sony Computer Entertainment: Another developer/publisher with some great and unforgettable output. Many new franchises, not all of them equally good, but they definetly put out some serious quality this gen. Sony's internal studios are consistenly improving themselves, which has lead them to reaching a high quality first party output. It's one of the few developers which has more than one 'greatest game of the generation' title in it's line-up. I'm really looking forward to their PS3 output.

Ubisoft: In the vein of the previous two companies. Both a publisher and developer of many of the better titles this gen. They really innovated with some of those games, though that got a bit blurred with the number of sequels they churn out. Luckily, the overall quality hardly ever suffers from this policy. Now with the next-gen around the corner, they shine all over again. Though the company has some similarities with EA, their overall quality is clearly better.

Konami: Arguably not as good a Japanese developer as Capcom, but they do have some big, high quality franchises which they put out succesfully this gen. As a fan of the MGS and Silent Hill series, this developer is quite dear to me. But other than that, they are one of the best game companies this gen anyway. Next-gen looks promising for them as well, if only for MGS4.

Nintendo: Well, what to say about Nintendo? Even though their quality has dwindled this gen compared to their past efforts, they are still going strong. Just look at this line-up, it's HUGE and all quality stuff. IntSys was their best internal developer this gen, with EAD clearly performing under par. Things are picking up again though with the advent of Nintendo DS and Revolution. If Nintendo puts serious effort into it, they could become the arguably best developer of all again.

"Because I said so, you pathetic fool."

Theres tons of other cool developers out there, but overall Snowblind Studio have left the biggest impression on me as a gamer.

CoN, BG: DA, RtA -- they might not be considered huge, but they've provided me with some of the best gaming experiences ever an all this made possible by the most impressive small developer. This why I can't wait to see whats from them next.

I'd probably say Square is my favorite, but they've put out so much crap lately that it hurts. They've also made me not very excited for FFXII, so that's a blow right there.

Blizzard for PCs though, hands down - it's the only games I play on the computer.

Nintendo for multiplayer.
Capcom for singleplayer.

Well, if we're talking about best gamecompanies of all time, I would scrap Ubisoft from my list and replace it with both Blizzard and Bioware. I would probably put some more companies on that list then, but I'd have to take some time to think about that.

lots of Nintendo love here. as expected... I still say Capcom is the best developer this gen but Nintendo and Sony are damn close IMO.

Despite a rough 2003 where just about everybody had written them off, Capcom came back and delivered the two best titles of 2005, RE4 and DMC3. I'd also put Minish Cap up there since it was developed by Capcom. It's nice to see them end the generation with a bang just like they began it with games like Third Strike, CvS2, MvC2, Tech Romancer, Project Justice and Code Veronica.

Another vote for Capcom.

The unrivaled DMC series is for reinventing, redefining, setting standard for 3D action.
RE sereis is for reinventing, redefining, setting standard survival horror

As much as I love Nintendo for Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc., Blizzard is infallible. Every fucking game that they release is THE game that defines the genre. WoW came out and just completely destroyed every MMORPG. Starcraft is still absolutely amazing, and better than WCIII IMO, which is another awesome RTS. And Diablo 2 is the definition of gaming crack.

I agree with everything in this list.

The only problem I had with Capcom this gen is that they fucked up the console MMX games. Other than that, yeah they were awesome.

I think maybe it's a matter of style. I really dig almost everything Capcom makes because of their consistent style. Their characters and game concepts are always interesthing without being too flashy. Some people really dig Nintendo's style. Some people buy every Sonic game ever made. After a while you just get kinda biased towards your favorite company because their sense of style matches yours. So then even if they make an average game, it's above average to you because you like a lot of the company's core design principles.

Also, check this out. I pretty much agree with everything he has to say, except maybe the comment about Megaman. I'm pretty sure those games make a decent amount of money, especially with all the extra marketing they get from the cartoon shows, action figures, and stuff like that.

Some of the greatest technical achievements in games and crazy fan support (Free engine source code? Please! Gigantic communities? Please!) aside, Quake 3 is the greatest, most refined deathmatch game out there.

Nadeo
All through the Trackmania series, these guys have shown stupid crazy fan support, and the games are the best things to happen to the genre alongside F-Zero and Wipeout.

Konami
Starting arcade music games. Beatmania IIDX had me for years, and I still enjoy it today. Gradius. Castlevania. Oh, and Metal Gear, too, I guess.

Capcom
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike is the greatest game to come out of Capcom. There are some other good things here and there, but whatever.

Also, I'm on a slight shooter kick.

Psikyo
I was kinda iffy on their shooters, but then I played the Strikers series. Hot damn.

you might want to fix this

----

What's funny is that if this thread was made six or seven years ago, I probably would have had a few paragraphs ready for the companies that more tend to make the games I like than I don't; today, I can't even be so complimentary towards any given company at all. Like, lesse...

Capcom
On the Saturn and Dreamcast, I have more Capcom games than all other publishers combined, and I don't even own a single Bio Hazard title. With this generation they've basically stopped their development of arcade-oriented titles, save for licenced Gundam crap, and as a result they haven't made a game that I personally have liked since 3rd Strike. The DMC, RE, and VJ series all do nothing for me. Even their retro collection for this gen is half-hearted at best. So Capcom, until you make a fighting game worth playing or something, kiss my ass.

Cave
Hey, Espgaluda and Dodonpachi Daiojou and Mushihime are great and all, sure. But where's the home versions of Progear and Ketsui? Oh, wait, there are none? Well, until you provide them, kiss my ass.

Konami
So all it took for you to continue home versions of your flagship music game series was a year of cumulative fanboy whining and surveys so that you can dump the series to your Junior Programmers Division. Great. Meanwhile, it sure must suck to be a fan of anything but Pop'n Music, that is unless you like waiting years upon years for absolutely nothing. I'd talk about something else, but beyond licenced anime crap and Metal Gear, what else do they have? Silent Hill? There's cheaper cures for insomnia. Castlevania? Make a 2D console version and we'll talk. Until then or until you make a home version of Beatmania 3, kiss my ass.

Sega
There'll be no comments about Sonic, VF, or Monkey Ball here because I never have nor ever will care about any of those titles. My main interest with Sega this generation was for Sakura Taisen 5, and look at how it ultimately turned out. It's quite incredible how one company can take a series that was carefully crafted and a consistent seller over half of a decade and run all momentum completely into the ground. I think I can safely say that unless they make another Jet Set Radio I'll never buy another Sega game for the rest of my life.

So, yeah, I can't think of a single company that I feel deserves praise. Keep in mind these comments are towards the companies that make the games I actually like. The less I say about companies like Nintendo and Treasure, the better.

SEGA

My 2 favorite games of all time: Phantasy Star 2 and Rez
The Master System, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast
Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles
Wonder Boy 3: The Dragon's Trap
Shining Force
Virtua Fighter
NiGHTS
Streets of Rage
Panzer Dragoon
Golden Axe
Super Monkey Ball
After Burner
Space Harrier
Outrun
Galaxy Force (loved this as a kid :P)
Viruta Racing
Daytona
Sega Rally
Shenmue
Ecco the Dolphin
Landstalker (technically Climax)
Crazy Taxi
Virtua Tennis
Skies of Arcadia
Defenders of/Beyond/Legend of Oasis
Virtua Cop
Jet Set Radio
Shadow Dancer and Shinobi 3
Columns
Publishing some Treasure games in the US
and there's probably more stuff I'm forgetting

Wow... you're going to put up a logo of LucasArts and then not say why you think they are so awesome? You have to be joking.

LucasArts is NOT awesome. They are a vastly different company now than they used to be.

Unless you are talking about the good old days, in which case, I forgive you.

Lucasarts today sucks badly. And I am saying this as a insanely obsessed Star Wars fan who worships the prequels.

Sega: for the Shinobi series alone... okay, throw in Sonic Adventure 2, because I adored that from beginning to end as well.

Capcom: for reasons everyone else have said already. I would'nt argue with you if you said they were the best developer this gen.

Namco: because Soul Calibur rocks.

Sammy: Guilty Gear X2. YEAH!

Konami: Metal Gear Series. MGS2 is memorable to me in just about every fashion.

Nintendo: I'll say straight off; I'm a Nintendo fanboy, but a fanboy of videogames as well. Call me an Ntard if you like, because hey, it's the truth right? But I don't disregard other competitors systems like some Nfans do, why? You can never have too much 3rd party support. But I disgress.

Nintendo, IMO, was at their ultimate high in the n64 generation. Okay, so they got stomped userbase wise against Sony. That's all fine and dandy... but man, Mario 64 / Zelda OoT and MM / Starfox 64. Need I say more? Classics god dammit. Every single one of them. Nintendo hasn't been good this generation, in fact, if it weren't for Intelligent Systems picking up EAD's slack, the Cube console as a whole would've stunk. But EAD brought out its brilliance once again when they want to create something new, when they've released the Pikmin franchise. Captain Olimar and friends FTW.

Nintendo has that swagger back with the DS, and I expect great things to come with Revolution as well, super-duper-waggle-wand and inferior technology and all that crazy stuff.

Rareware

For bringing the last generation a host of games that captured the very spirit of the gamer in us all through incredible game, art, and audio design which appealed to the imagination in rewarding the player...

... and then not doing it anymore.

:(

Super Mario Strikers, while it could've been much better IMO, is an unbelievably fun game. It's so addictive.
To be honest, I haven't played it enough to decide. That list represents the games I've enjoyed from Nintendo... games I didn't enjoy aren't on the list.

I played the hell out of Shinobi 3 back in the day and i enjoyed the first Shinobi game for PS2, but it's not that big a series. Aside from the follow-up to the PS2 Shinobi and the Shinobi game for the Sega Saturn, what else is there? And speaking of the Saturn Shinobi game, how was that one? That's the only Shinobi game that i never really got a chance to play.

Hey, you'll note the lack of Mario Party 3, 4, or 6 six on the list. MP2 was the best in the series, and MP5 was the first truly good MP game since that point. 6 and 7 are both decent, but 7 seems to be better overall.
